As a hardcore gamer and anime enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the cosplay collaboration between Zelina Vega and Rhea Ripley as Ryuk and Misa Amane from Death Note is nothing short of spectacular! The attention to detail and accuracy in their portrayals are truly awe-inspiring.
This Thursday marks the end of ComicBook’s Zelina Vega Cosplay Countdown, as Halloween is just around the corner. Over the past month, ComicBook has been releasing exclusive sneak peeks at WWE superstar Zelina’s nerdy cosplays, which have been heavily influenced by her love for anime since she’s a big fan of the genre. Some examples include characters from Jujutsu Kaisen, Sailor Moon, and Naruto.
Before things officially wrap up, however, Death Note and WWE fans will rejoice with this one! This week, Zelina and former WWE Women’s World Champion Rhea Ripley are breathing life into the iconic Death Note Manga series which turns 21 this year. The duo recreate the iconic Japanese Death God Ryuk and Misa Amane.
Zelina shared with ComicBook, “Misa Amane from ‘Death Note’! This anime is one of my top favorites ever.” She continued, “It might shock some, but those who really understand me won’t be surprised that Light Yagami is my favorite character. The intelligence this man possesses – it’s both captivating and terrifying. I aspire to be as intelligent as him, without the God complex and all.
In my viewpoint, I embody Ryuk, the fearsome Shinigami, quite impressively. The pallor of my skin, coupled with that broad, ominous grin, seems strikingly authentic. Moreover, my towering stature suits this cosplay perfectly, as Ryuk is renowned for his tall and slender physique.
Regarding the topic of divinity… did you know that the Grim Reaper seems particularly fond of apples? It’s intriguing, as I often feel a certain presence nearby. I can’t quite pinpoint what it is, but whatever it is, she reminds me of Ryuk from Death Note, who was Misa’s counterpart. Ryuk and this unknown entity, a seemingly perfect pair, are like the villainous duo straight out of heaven. I must admit, the detail with which they are portrayed is quite impressive.

In my enthusiasm for the fascinating world of Shinigami lore, I can’t help but share a captivating detail: Ryuk, as pointed out by Zelina, has a peculiar fondness for apples that he often likens to vices like alcohol and cigarettes. However, these aren’t your typical apples. Instead, they have an intriguing texture reminiscent of sand, setting them apart from their conventional counterparts.
This week’s cosplay is intriguing because it seems quite similar to the character’s everyday looks. In the manga, Misa harbors feelings for Light (Kira), yet his affection for her isn’t always returned. However, she is often underestimated as being merely naive, but in truth, she demonstrates more intelligence than people realize.
She understands Light may not reciprocate her feelings, yet she still suggests he use her. Similarly, she’s convinced that only Kira can bring justice for her murdered parents and won’t back down until she gets it. This makes her character seem somewhat single-minded, but there’s no denying she advanced the plot concerning Kira.
Over time, Ripley has openly expressed her deep affection for Death Note. In fact, some aspects of her early wrestling attire, which she designed during her NXT days, were influenced by the character Ryuk. Furthermore, one of her pets even bears a name inspired by this unique, humanoid-like figure. Therefore, it’s clear that she is indeed an avid fan.
