As a die-hard fan who’s been following the Star Trek franchise since the original series premiered, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and concern upon hearing Zoe Saldaña’s comments about Star Trek 4. On one hand, it’s heartening to know that our beloved cast members are as eager as we are to return to space. But on the other, the sight of gray hairs on Uhura and Spock might just be a bit too real!
Actress Zoe Saldaña, famous for her roles in both Avatar and Guardians of the Galaxy, has voiced worries about the extended postponement of Star Trek 4, hinting that time may be slipping away for the original cast’s space voyage return. In an interview with Deadline to promote her Golden Globe-nominated portrayal in Emilia Pérez, Saldaña discussed the status of the eagerly anticipated sequel to 2016’s Star Trek Beyond. She expressed concern that if they wait too long to make the movie, she and the rest of the cast might become too old to reprise their roles in Star Trek.
She expressed her desire by saying, “I’d prefer to get it done as soon as possible instead of later on.” She added, “Given how many of us have a full head of gray hair, we should hurry up if we plan to bring back the same cast for another performance.
Additionally, Saldaña mentioned she’d like to delve deeper into her character’s connection with Spock, if by chance, Star Trek 4 ever comes to fruition.
It’s been a while since I picked up with Star Trek again, and the dynamics between characters like Uhura and Spock have always intrigued me. It seems logical to explore where their relationship might go next, both personally and professionally.
Her remarks differ significantly from those of her co-star Zachary Quinto (who plays Spock), particularly in regards to the timing for producing Star Trek 4. In an interview with Variety, Quinto expressed his view that there’s no limit for Star Trek 4, pointing out that the original series cast continued filming movies even into their 50s and 60s.
In simple terms, the first two movies directed by J.J. Abrams within the Star Trek series were significant box office hits. Notably, “Star Trek Into Darkness” remains the highest-earning film in the franchise up until now. On the other hand, “Star Trek Beyond” was deemed a financial letdown, which could lead Paramount to reconsider further episodes in the series.
The project has encountered several delays since it was first unveiled, initially intending to show Chris Pine’s James T. Kirk interacting with his father, portrayed by Chris Hemsworth. Several directors such as S.J. Clarkson, Noah Hawley, and Matt Shakman have been brought on board only to leave later, leaving the most recent iteration of the project to welcome screenwriter Steve Yockey from popular series like Supernatural and Doom Patrol, joining in March.
As for the big-screen future of Star Trek, it’s still under wraps, but on the small screen, the franchise continues to grow. Starting Jan. 24, 2025, you can catch the Paramount+ exclusive film “Section 31” featuring Michelle Yeoh, Omari Hardwick, Kacey Rohl, Sam Richardson, Sven Ruygrok, and Robert Kazinsky. In the realm of television, “Strange New Worlds” Season 3 is on its way, followed by “Starfleet Academy,” which is currently being filmed for a possible release in either 2025 or 2026. Lastly, a Star Trek movie focusing on origins is planned for the 2025 cinema lineup as well.
