Zoe Saldaña’s Expletive-Filled BAFTA Speech Cut from BBC Broadcast

BBC addressed the situation following the omission of Zoe Saldaña’s complete BAFTA acceptance speech from their broadcast yesterday, as she won the award for Best Supporting Actress.

Following her win for her performance in Emilia Pérez, Saldaña shared: “My kids told me not to cry, so I’ll give it a go.

It’s incredibly gratifying and a great privilege for me, as there have been only a handful of instances when I auditioned using a British accent, but the dialect coach often said something along the lines of “this isn’t likely to work out for you.

Although I adore British accents and have many wonderful British friends, I often find myself mimicking their expressions such as ‘gather’, ‘of course’, and ‘I know I can be a real hassle’. Fortunately, I’ve managed to stay friends with most of them. By the way, Kate [Winslet]?

The actress continued her speech by expressing gratitude towards BAFTA for the received award, noting: “Working on this project was an extraordinary creative endeavor. It’s difficult to find words to describe a film that transcends traditional classification. I embarked on this journey alongside Jacques Audiard, so I want to extend my heartfelt thanks. Lastly, I’d like to acknowledge the exceptional cast.

Saldaña carried on with her talk, expressing gratitude towards her fellow actors, such as Selena Gomez and Karla Sofia Gascón. However, upon spotting a timer signaling the end of her speech, she exclaimed three strong words.

In simpler terms, the speaker ended her speech saying, “Movies should stir emotions and provoke thoughts, and I believe Emilia Pérez managed to do just that, as it’s crucial for voices to be shared. However, my English accent may not be up to par.

Saldaña’s full speech is available to watch on the BAFTAs YouTube channel.

Additionally, Emilia Pérez was honored with the accolade for the Best Non-English Film. In his acceptance speech, director Audiard paid tribute to everyone who put in countless hours to make this movie a reality.

This year, Saldaña has been nominated for the category of Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars, specifically for her role as Emilia Pérez. The movie she’s in is up for multiple awards too: Best Picture, Best International Film, and Best Adapted Screenplay, among others.
