With the release of 007: First Light approaching on March 27, 2026, IO Interactive, the game’s developer, has launched a new video series offering a behind-the-scenes look at its creation. The first episode, titled “Beyond the Light,” features insights from gameplay director Andreas Krogh and senior level designer Thomas Pulluelo about how they’re building the game.
In the nearly 17-minute video, Krogh and Pulluelo watch reactions from streamers and gamers to the game, and discuss the reasoning behind some of the design choices in 007: First Light.
Krogh mentioned that, like the Hitman series, 007: First Light will feature enemies – called Enforcers – who are better at spotting the player, even if they’re wearing a disguise. He explained that these characters can recognize people who work at the location, allowing them to see through any attempts at blending in. It’s a similar concept to the one found in Hitman, though not identical.
Krogh also discussed encouraging player creativity by offering multiple ways to achieve goals. He pointed out, though, that players need to know about those options for it to work.
Krogh explained that the game offers players a variety of choices. He emphasized that if developers break the players’ trust, they’ll stop considering or using those options, which limits their creativity and the overall gameplay experience. Essentially, trust is key to encouraging players to explore all the possibilities the game has to offer.
Something really important we’ve carried over from past Hitman games is what I call ‘uncertainty in execution.’ Basically, I always know what I could do, and I can see the possibilities around me. But the fun comes when I actually try something risky. There’s always that moment of doubt – will it work? And then, when it does work, that feeling of ‘Yes! I pulled it off!’ is amazing. It’s that little bit of risk that makes things exciting.
Pulluelo explained that they want players to easily see all their choices and possibilities. To achieve this, the game’s levels are designed to visually highlight every available option as players progress.
IO Interactive has been upfront about using what they learned from making the Hitman games to improve their new game, 007: First Light. Just last month, the studio’s CEO, Hakan Abrak, discussed how releasing Hitman in episodes taught them valuable lessons, especially when looking at how recent games like Dispatch were released.
Currently, the game 007: First Light is in development for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. You can find out more about the game, including details on the Aston Martin Valhalla that will be featured, by checking out available information.
