In the unveiling of 007 First Light, developer IO Interactive has shared one guideline they were instructed to avoid when crafting James Bond: deviating too far from the established and iconic persona of the character. Known for his sophistication, charm, daring, good looks, and subtlety, Bond adheres to certain behaviors. He won’t be brash or overly attention-seeking unless it serves a purpose. While Bond follows a specific mold, there are opportunities to explore fresh narratives and locales while staying true to the character.
At present, Amazon is working on a fresh James Bond film under the direction of Denis Villeneuve, known for Dune. The movie is still some years off, and we’re unsure who will portray Bond, but it’s expected that Villeneuve will bring his realistic approach to filmmaking to this project. In the meantime, fans can anticipate a new 007 video game scheduled for release in 2026. This is the first such game in over a decade and will have no connection to the films. IO Interactive, known for their work on Hitman, is developing the game, and they recently unveiled it publicly for the first time.
007 First Light Won’t Make Bond a “Killing Machine”
As a gamer, I’ve been eagerly awaiting news about 007 First Light, which was recently unveiled but remains shrouded in mystery. Recently, I had the chance to chat with franchise director Jonathan Lacaille about the game. When asked about the limitations they faced from Bond owners MGM, it appears that one of the main requests was to avoid creating a game where Bond becomes a ruthless killing machine, focusing instead on other aspects of the Bond universe.
That’s an interesting question, one I haven’t encountered before. Let me reflect, but at the moment, nothing specific comes to mind other than the initial decision not to transform him into a lethal weapon. Yes, that was crucial. However, overall, they’ve been quite open-minded. They’ve evaluated every idea we proposed and never shut us down outright. Instead, they’d often suggest alternatives or modifications, making the process collaborative and productive. It’s been a joy to have them so involved in our project, given their extensive experience with the franchise. I assume it was an exciting journey for them too.
007’s recent gaming adventures have predominantly revolved around shooter games. However, the involvement of Bond in the Hitman series significantly enhanced the value of their pitch to MGM. There was once a belief that Bond might shy away from gaming, but the Hitman series is more about strategy and planning rather than just action. While there’s certainly action involved, it isn’t the primary focus. Instead, it’s all about careful planning and strategic decision-making. Yet, IO Interactive acknowledges that _007 First Light_ cannot simply mimic the Hitman format. It must stand on its own with a slightly faster pace to differentiate itself from its predecessor.
In the new version, some DNA remains, but the gameplay will significantly change. Earlier, you mentioned it; Hitman, if you recall, it’s more of an expansive and patient game where you carefully wait for the perfect moment, like counting milliseconds before a guard moves on. Conversely, First Light’s character is younger, less patient, and sometimes impulsive. This means the design prioritizes constant forward motion, so he needs to think fast and make quick decisions.
007 First Light will release in 2026 for Xbox Series X|S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.
