007: First Light Developers Want to Make Sure that Bond’s Gadgets Are “More Than Just Gimmicks”

IO Interactive’s new James Bond game, *007: First Light*, will naturally feature a variety of gadgets for players to use. According to gameplay director Andreas Krogh in an interview with PC Gamer (reported by GamesRadar), these gadgets need to be genuinely useful and not just superficial additions to the gameplay.

Krogh explained that the team aimed to create gadgets that were useful, realistic, and enjoyable to use repeatedly, hoping to cover a wide range of gameplay situations. They also wanted each gadget to be unique in both appearance and function, giving it a specific role. Ultimately, the goal was to provide players with a diverse set of tools to match their preferred playstyle.

The James Bond series started as stories about a resourceful spy who could handle any challenge. But since the 1964 film *Goldfinger*, the movies have become known for featuring incredible, high-tech gadgets. The new film will continue this tradition, showcasing a range of gadgets fitting for James Bond, including a watch that can fire a laser to disable opponents or cause things to happen around him, and a smoke bomb for sneaking around undetected.

The game will probably feature unique gadgets that let Bond start exciting gunfights in creative ways. According to the interview, the developers are focusing on making combat feel satisfying and engaging – unlike in games like *Hitman*, where players often try to avoid it. They want combat to be a core part of the experience, not just something you do when you have no other choice.

According to Krogh, in the original *Hitman* game, players generally avoided using ranged weapons because it was difficult. This time, the game is designed with a character that makes ranged combat a practical and effective strategy.

IO Interactive encourages players to prioritize stealth, but still allows for combat if needed. This approach aims to give players varied gameplay options, letting them tackle situations in their own preferred style.

We focused on building a system that was not only technically sound but also felt smooth and reacted quickly to the player,” said Krogh. “Our goal was to make sure that even if stealth fails, players can adapt and still enjoy a rewarding action-packed experience.

To deliver diverse gameplay, art director Rasmus Poulsen recently shared that *007: First Light* will include some of IO Interactive’s largest missions to date. According to Poulsen, “Some of the missions in the game are the largest we’ve ever created, based on their size.”

I’m really excited for the new James Bond game, 007: First Light! It’s coming to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on March 27, 2026 – I’ve already marked it on my calendar!
