From the moment IO Interactive showed off gameplay for 007 First Light, it was clear they brought their expertise from the Hitman series. Players can expect to carefully study their surroundings for openings, use gadgets to create distractions or eliminate enemies, and rely heavily on stealth – just like in the Hitman games.
It soon became clear that the new James Bond game would feature a lot of action, including exciting stunts, fast car chases, and intense close-quarters combat. The development team’s guiding principle was to maintain a sense of “forward momentum.” In a recent interview with Game Informer, gameplay director Andreas Krogh explained how this, combined with the game’s various systems, aims to make players truly feel like Bond.
We really wanted to emphasize James Bond’s quick thinking in our game. He’s a character who constantly adapts, and we’re building that into all aspects of gameplay, whether it’s sneaking around or fighting.
During battles, we’ve designed several features to help players effectively engage enemies at any distance. Our close-combat system includes quickly closing in on opponents, while our ranged combat emphasizes resource management – you won’t have unlimited ammunition, so players need to be mindful of how much they’re using.
Okay, so when I’m running low on ammo, the best thing to do is push forward and take it from the enemies! I’ve found it works really well to use my movement abilities to close the distance quickly. If I can disarm an enemy, even better – I can grab their weapon. I usually fire until it’s empty, then toss it aside and go for the next enemy to stagger them. That makes it super easy to either grab another gun or just loot their ammo and keep the fight going!
The team is also working to bring that same sense of speed and momentum to the stealth gameplay, which is a big change from previous Hitman games. Those games usually focused on careful observation and planning. Now, the emphasis is on quickly assessing your options while in cover, choosing one, and then using the resulting situation to create further opportunities and keep the action moving.
The environment is dynamic and reacts to player actions, particularly with the enhanced destruction system. For example, blowing something up might cause a collapse, creating a new route or revealing new possibilities. This encourages exploration and progression, as actions naturally lead to new options and keep encounters moving forward.
We’ve already seen Bond take down enemies and use them to help him survive, like pushing someone off an edge to cushion his fall and destroy a path. But there are quieter ways to use your surroundings too – for example, you can trick enemies into a room and then seal them inside by lasering the doorknob.
The new James Bond game, 007 First Light, launches on May 27th for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch. This is just the beginning of what players will be able to do as Bond, so keep an eye out for more news and watch the latest story trailer here.
