IO Interactive’s new James Bond game, *007: First Light*, will reveal the origins of the iconic spy and how he earned his 00 designation. Creative director Hakan Abrak explained that the team intentionally chose to tell an origin story because they didn’t want to adapt an existing Bond film or work with a character already fully developed. They wanted to create their own unique take on Bond’s beginnings.
During the interview, Abrak explained that the team wasn’t focused on achieving photorealistic graphics, like making the character of Pierce Brosnan look perfect. He clarified that he doesn’t intend to criticize developers of older *James Bond* games such as *GoldenEye* or *James Bond 007 Nightfire*, but IO Interactive prioritized establishing its own unique storytelling and creative approach for the game.
Martin Emborg, the cinematic and narrative director for *007: First Light*, also discussed this, pointing out that some parts of James Bond’s personality could come across as a bit superficial.
He explained that while everyone recognizes Bond’s signature style – his drink, clothes, and car – relying on those familiar elements isn’t enough to create a compelling story. To truly connect with the audience, they need emotional depth. Instead of simply recreating Bond’s established traits, the studio is aiming for a fresh, original story about a character who *becomes* James Bond, rather than just ticking off a list of expected references.
IO Interactive has a good foundation for exploring James Bond’s character because so much existing material – from books to films – already exists, explained Emborg. He noted that the many different portrayals of Bond over the years actually encourage developers to create their own unique interpretation.
Adding to the excitement, the new game, *007: First Light*, will introduce a brand new James Bond. Instead of mirroring previous actors like Sean Connery, Pierce Brosnan, or Daniel Craig, the game will feature a unique portrayal of Bond, played by Patrik Gibson, known for his role in *Dexter: Original Sin*.
IO Interactive recently released a new trailer for their upcoming game, *007: First Light*, introducing the character Dr. Selina Tan. The role will be played by Gemma Chan, an actress known for her appearances in films like *Eternals* and *Crazy Rich Asians*. While Chan has voiced characters in video games before, including Erys in *Diablo 4*’s Season 2, *007: First Light* marks the first time her appearance will be used to create a character.
The new James Bond game, *007: First Light*, is scheduled to release on March 27, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. You can find more information about the game, including details on Bond’s iconic gadgets, on the developer’s website.
