IO Interactive has previously mentioned that the game 007: First Light will be distinct from its Hitman series, despite having some commonalities. However, the CEO of IO Interactive, Hakan Abrak, hinted that the Bond game might feature Elusive Target-like limited-time missions as well.
During a conversation with The Game Business, Abrak discussed that IO Interactive is well-versed in such endeavors, thanks to the Hitman series. They expressed their intentions to broaden the scope of their single-player experiences by delivering additional content following the game’s release.
Abrak stated, “From our extensive work on the World of Assassination and understanding how to expand a single-player game through offering attractive free content to players, we aim to deliver the optimal, most impactful gaming experience with 007 First Light. Applying lessons from the World of Assassination to Bond, we’re committed to providing an exceptional journey for gamers.
In the Hitman series, which is now known as the Hitman World of Assassination, there are special missions called Elusive Targets. These missions have a time limit and can only be attempted once. If successful, players receive exclusive items. Over time, these Elusive Target missions change, with the latest one being Le Chiffre from Casino Royale, played by Mads Mikkelsen again.
Abrak remarked, “This provides us with additional opportunities for fun, as in Hitman, we have live challenges. However, in Bond, we’re able to incorporate more dynamic actions and energetic challenges beyond what we can do in Hitman.
Previously in this month, franchise director Jonathan Lacaille discussed their aim to blend the intricate mechanics of gameplay that ‘Hitman’ is recognized for, with the thrilling action style typically associated with a ‘James Bond’ themed game.
Lacaille stated, “It’s a choice between intense gameplay that resembles an action movie and the strategic, open-ended style seen in ‘Hitman.’ IOI has a history that aligns perfectly with this IP, but it doesn’t fully capture the essence of Bond. Therefore, we are emphasizing that aspect, while still considering other aspects as well.
As a gamer, I’m deeply immersed in what IO Interactive does best, but we’ve had to innovate quite a bit to expand their expertise and truly deliver the complete Bond experience. For example, we’ve taken on something new – driving mechanics. Yes, you heard it right, we’re now mastering that skill.
Lacaille discussed how the studio is innovating on the approach players take in dealing with situations within 007: First Light. Unlike in Hitman, where using a gun is considered a “failing condition,” 007: First Light will equally praise action gameplay as it does stealth play.
In the game “Hitman,” missing targets was typically an unsuccessful outcome, but here it’s a significant aspect. Lacaille explained that instead of focusing solely on shooting, they aim to create a more engaging experience. To achieve this, they want to equip players with various tools to make them feel as clever and cunning as James Bond in the game.
007: First Light is in development for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, and will be coming out in 2026.
