IO Interactive’s new game, 007 First Light, is off to a strong start, selling 1.5 million copies in just one day. Despite this success, the game still needs to generate significant revenue to cover its substantial development costs, which reportedly reached 1.3 billion kroner – approximately $140.49 million – according to Danish Broadcasting Corporation.
As a big fan, it’s amazing to hear how well the game is doing! What’s even more impressive is that it seems to be succeeding largely without a big marketing push, which makes the numbers even higher, especially considering IO Interactive is handling publishing themselves. A Danish TV station, TV 2, reported the same sales figures and pointed out that the game’s development costs are higher than pretty much any other entertainment project in Denmark – that’s incredible!
The Danish Business Authority pointed out that the game First Light had been in development for seven years. While it was announced in 2020, this was probably the beginning of pre-production, as IOI was still finishing Hitman 3, which came out in 2021. The exact start date of full production remains unclear.
Assuming the reported development costs are correct and including marketing expenses, 007 First Light would need to sell at least three million copies to break even. However, with positive reviews and being the first well-received James Bond game in years, reaching that number seems likely.
You can now play 007 First Light on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. A version for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 will be released later this summer. We gave the game a fantastic 9 out of 10 in our review!
