IO Interactive has talked extensively about how they aimed to capture not just the feel of James Bond in 007 First Light, but also the experience of playing as a Bond who is still in training. The game provides players with a variety of approaches to complete objectives, letting them enjoy experimenting with different strategies. However, simply adapting the gameplay from Hitman wasn’t enough; they needed to create something unique.
According to lead writer Michael Vogt in the recent “Beyond the Light” episode, the team is aiming for a balance: giving players freedom while still making them feel like James Bond. He explains that unlike in Hitman, where players can act wildly out of character, that wouldn’t work for Bond. Bond is such an iconic figure, behaving differently would just feel off.
Instead of giving players set options, the game encourages them to be creative and adapt. According to Vogt, players can build their Bond character in many ways – as a strong fighter, a smooth talker who avoids conflict, or a stealthy operative relying on gadgets. All of these approaches are perfectly viable.
As a fan, I really appreciate how the game lets you make choices – it feels like you’re genuinely being smart and resourceful, just like a classic spy, but it all flows naturally within the story. You get to feel like the agent without anything feeling forced or out of place.
The game doesn’t offer many choices that change the story’s direction. While conversations with characters always have one main path to follow, you can still choose other dialogue options to discover more about the game’s world and its inhabitants. The developers focused on rewarding players who are curious and enjoy immersing themselves in the environment, encouraging them to pay attention to conversations happening around them – almost like eavesdropping – especially in social areas.
In games like Hitman, a key part of the gameplay involves eavesdropping on conversations to get clues and find new ways to complete your goals. As you explore and look for solutions, you’ll encounter different characters, which adds to your understanding of the game world. This cycle of exploration, listening, and learning is something that happens frequently.
You’ll be able to replay missions with extra challenges, which is a good way to learn the levels before trying harder difficulties. IO Interactive hasn’t shared details about these challenges yet, so keep an eye out for more information before 007 First Light releases on May 27th for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.
