007 First Light Won’t “Resolve” Bond’s Character: “It’s As Much About How He Changes MI6”

A fresh episode for the James Bond game, 007 First Light, is now available. This standalone title explores Bond’s origins, and the new content focuses on the story behind the game and how the writers developed the main character, as explained by lead writer Michael Vogt.

This story shows a younger, newly discharged James Bond as he begins his career with MI6, still figuring out his place in the world. We see glimpses of his past experiences, but the story isn’t about completing his character arc – it’s about his journey of growth and discovery.

Vogt explains they’re setting Bond on a new path, but won’t be giving him a complete character arc within this particular story. He believes Bond develops and adapts, but remains fundamentally the same person. Instead, Bond’s inherent qualities are what allow him to be a force for change in the world – something he consistently does throughout his missions.

He’s not the typical sophisticated and world-weary Bond we often see in films and novels, but he definitely has some of the core qualities from the start. However, this story isn’t just about his transformation into the familiar Bond; it’s equally focused on how he changes MI6 and the people around him.

James Bond in this new portrayal is courageous, persistent, and willing to take chances, which shakes up the typically cautious and analytical methods of MI6. Unlike previous versions, this Bond relies more on teamwork. This is because he’s still new to the spy world and learning, and also because, in a video game, players spend a lot of time acting independently, so the character needs to reflect that experience, as explained by Vogt.

The story really relies on the supporting characters around Bond. He forms several meaningful relationships, both with familiar faces and new ones, and these connections all influence his growth and development throughout the film.

We’ve met key supporting characters like M, Miss Moneypenny, Greenway, and Q – Q is particularly interesting as he’s more of a fun, approachable mentor. It’s still unclear how the villains will change Bond, but we’re already seeing examples. Bawma, played by Lenny Kravitz, is rising to power from humble beginnings, and the mysterious 009 has betrayed the agency, though we don’t yet know why.

007 First Light launches on May 27th for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.
