For decades, James Bond has been known as a highly capable, one-person force. IO Interactive’s new game, *007 First Light*, explores how Bond became the legendary spy we all know.
According to creative director Hakan Abrak, the team didn’t want to portray a typical, established Superman. As he explained to Edge Magazine (via GamesRadar), they weren’t interested in a character who was already powerful, experienced, and emotionally closed off. They felt that starting with a hardened, ‘iron-clad’ Superman wouldn’t be as compelling.
The James Bond character really came into his own with the 1962 film *Dr. No*. Interestingly, even though it was the first movie in the series, it doesn’t explain Bond’s origins. As narrative and cinematic director Martin Emborg points out, “It’s remarkable that *Dr. No* just starts with Bond already being a fully developed agent.”
He’s having a lucky streak at baccarat, playing against an attractive woman who’s clearly interested in him. Despite the good fortune and attention, he seems detached and unimpressed, almost as if this kind of night is routine for him. It’s the ultimate fantasy scenario, but it feels distant and hard to connect with.
Bond still has his classic smooth style and charisma, but this version feels more reckless and energetic, reflecting his younger age. We see this immediately in the demo, where he ignores direct orders to chase after a target, driving wildly through the landscape. And the aerial sequence is a thrilling, impressive set piece.
Launching on March 27, 2026, for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2, *007 First Light* promises to raise the intensity even more. Keep an eye out for future news, and you can find out why IO Interactive chose not to base the game on a specific movie at this link.
