Each enthusiast of James Bond prefers their own favorite 007 actor. However, for Jonathan Lacaille, the mastermind directing the upcoming video game, 007 First Light, it’s not just one, but two actors he admires.
He expresses his fondness for Sean Connery and Daniel Craig, noting their numerous shared qualities, as he relaxes in a conference room situated within IO Interactive’s offices in Brighton.
Ioio, the Danish video game creator, is primarily recognized for developing the Hitman series, yet currently, they’re deeply engrossed in creating First Light, marking the return of a Bond game since the release of 007 Legends in 2012.
At Sony’s State of Play event held in June, this upcoming third-person action game was unveiled, with a planned release date sometime in 2026. The story will explore the backstory of the secret agent as he ascends through MI6 ranks, aiming to achieve the prestigious ‘license to kill’ status.
To begin with, the concept of the game was tentatively unveiled in 2020, as per Lacaille’s account. He further clarifies that MGM (acquired by Amazon in 2022) agreed to go ahead with the project following a proposal from IO.

As a die-hard fan, I’d say, “I wasn’t expecting much when it came to pitching Bond, but Amazon MGM seemed to ‘get us’ instantly. Our edge was that IO Studios is well-known in the spy fantasy genre, and with years of Hitman under our belt, we’ve honed our craft.
Ian proposed the concept of delving into Bond’s past, all the while ensuring that essential elements of a traditional 007 escapade are present – captivating foreign settings and an abundance of high-tech devices.
Even though Amazon MGM hasn’t named a new actor to take over the role from Craig (who was last seen in 2021’s No Time to Die), they are looking to the original James Bond novels by Ian Fleming for inspiration and have been granted some creative liberty to give the character a fresh twist.
As a passionate admirer, I can’t help but draw inspiration from the timeless masterpieces of cinema and their enduring impact. However, it’s crucial to understand that our creative endeavor isn’t about mimicking the past. Instead, we’re striving to bring something genuinely innovative to the gaming world – a unique proposal tailored specifically for this dynamic medium.

He’s being secretive about who will play Bond, hinting at a reveal coming this summer. However, he hinted that this portrayal of the character will have lots of appeal yet may show less self-assurance than we’re used to, due to his older age and limited experience in the role.
In the immersive world of First Light, I’ll be delving into an unexplored detail that hasn’t graced the silver screen – the scar on Bond’s face. This intriguing marking was initially hinted at in Fleming’s 1953 masterpiece, Casino Royale, where it was vividly described as a “slender, vertical gash on his right cheek.
As I delved deeper into this captivating world of gaming, Lacaille subtly suggested that maybe, just maybe, the game could offer some insight into its origins.
Regarding First Light, it won’t be formally recognized as canon, even though there have been discussions about this with Amazon MGM.
Lacaille stated that the matter of this game being included in the official canon along with other Amazon MGM Bond projects has indeed been talked about, but it’s not currently a reality.
The goal has consistently been to achieve greater independence. [Regarding the game], it will coexist with all other projects under Amazon MGM, Lacaille explains, but it won’t be directly linked or integrated.
He also mentions that the narrative of First Light encompasses topics related to artificial intelligence and emphasizes the significance of humans involved in this area (perhaps touching upon the subject of remote work as well), given their extreme relevance in today’s world.
A significant aspect of the Bond series is its ability to adapt and reflect current events. We’re following suit in this regard,” he notes. Characters such as M, who will delve into her backstory while reactivating the 00 section, will also play a crucial role in the game’s narrative.
The trailer for June offers a sneak peek at what the game will entail, revealing that Bond’s parents perished in a mountain climbing accident when he was eleven years old. In desperation to survive, they severed their own rope, allowing Bond to live on by finding his own path to safety after witnessing their fall.
It’s revealed that he’s exceptionally intelligent, yet struggles with figures of authority. His background includes military service in the Navy, where he was involved in a tumultuous operation in Iceland on behalf of MI6; an event that came close to claiming his life. He’s often referred to as a “wandering bullet” or “gun without a target”.
Additionally, you’ll find classic Bond elements such as a laser wristwatch, thrilling gunfights with explosions, intense close-combat scenes, and an exhilarating car chase featuring an Aston Martin.
In addition to stealth scenes reminiscent of the Hitman series, where players must sneak past guards or fit into high-society events, Lacaille notes that IO Interactive has increased the action. The emphasis is on creating realistic gunfights through improvements in weapon recoil, aiming, and cover systems. Moreover, for the first time, driving segments have been included in the game.
In the realm of video games, Agent 47 from the Hitman series and James Bond present distinct personalities. While playing Hitman, strategy and patience are crucial as one must devise an ingenious plan for a unique, well-executed assassination. On the other hand, James Bond’s adventures in movies often involve quick thinking and impromptu action rather than meticulous planning.
In the game “First Light”, the protagonist, Bond, is depicted as a youthful and impulsive character. Consequently, players are expected to remain agile in their thinking, making swift choices amidst tense situations. This results in a dynamic tempo and cadence, according to Lacaille’s explanation.
In “First Light,” you’ll find a mix of structured missions and open-ended sandbox environments, offering you flexibility in how you tackle each objective. Various gadgets are available for neutralizing enemies, opening doors, or disabling cameras to facilitate stealthy maneuvers. However, you won’t be able to launch into every task with all guns blazing, as Bond hasn’t yet earned his license to kill, according to Lacaille.
We’re exploring the concept of lethal authority, but it comes with certain guidelines for use. More specifics about this exciting new aspect will be shared in detail come this summer.
