For decades, Mobile Suit Gundam has been the most popular anime series featuring giant robots, and it’s widely considered the biggest in the genre. While shows like Neon Genesis Evangelion and Code Geass are also well-known, Gundam has remained dominant with a huge number of TV series and films. Recently, the franchise, which started in the 1970s, held a global poll asking fans to vote for their favorite robots. With so many options available, the results of this mecha poll might be surprising.
The “Worldwide Gundam General Election 2025,” a fan poll to determine the most popular Gundam robot, launched last October. Surprisingly, the winner wasn’t from recent series like Gundam Wing, The Witch From Mercury, or G Gundam. Instead, the original Mobile Suit Gundam‘s “V Gundam” from Char’s Counterattack took first place! Many other popular mechs followed closely behind. You can find the complete top ten list below to see how your favorite ranked.
Here’s a ranking of popular Gundam mobile suits: 1. ν Gundam (from Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack), 2. Wing Gundam Zero (from Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz), 3. Zeta Gundam (from Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam), 4. Freedom Gundam (from Mobile Suit Gundam SEED), 5. Mighty Strike Freedom Gundam (from Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM), 6. ∀ Gundam (from ∀ Gundam), 7. Gundam F91 (from Mobile Suit Gundam F91), 8. Strike Rouge (from Mobile Suit Gundam SEED), 9. Gundam Barbatos Lupus Rex (from Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans), and 10. Gundam Aerial (from Mobile Suit Gundam: Witch of Mercury).
Gundam: Old & New

As of today, v Gundam received the most votes overall, largely thanks to support from Japan, totaling 94,334 votes. Looking at regional preferences, Gundam Wing was the most popular choice in North America, with Gundam Zero receiving the most votes. In China, the “Mighty Strike Freedom Gundam” from Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM was the winner. While tastes in mechs vary around the world, v Gundam ultimately came out on top.
Even though some storylines featuring these robots have concluded, they aren’t gone forever. The Gundam series often revisits old stories, creating new adventures within existing universes and even exploring alternate timelines. For example, Gundam GQuuuuuuX offered a “What If” scenario, reimagining the original series with a twist – what if Char had piloted the Gundam instead of Amuro? And with no end in sight for the franchise, we can expect even more creative expansions in the future.
