Warning: This article includes MAJOR SPOILERS for Virgin River season 7!
After four seasons of ups and downs, the show Virgin River manages to turn things around for its most disliked couple in season 7 with a compelling story. While Netflix has produced many hit original series, Virgin River stands out as a surprisingly charming and heartwarming show, despite its sometimes over-the-top moments.
Inspired by Robyn Carr’s novels, Virgin River centers on the lives, loves, and challenges of the people living in a close-knit California town. The series recently became Netflix’s longest-running English-language drama, with season 8 confirmed before season 7 even premiered.
After a year and a half off the air, the heartwarming romance Virgin River is back with season 7 and plenty of new twists. This season answers questions left hanging from season 6, while also introducing exciting new storylines – and even a surprising redemption arc for the show’s most disliked characters.
Denny & Lizzie Are The Most Hated Couple In Virgin River

The fans of Virgin River are passionate and rarely agree on who should be with whom—except for Mel and Jack! Everyone has their favorite couples, leading to a lot of disagreements. For example, people are divided on whether Preacher and Kaia are a good match, and some even prefer Doc with Muriel instead of Hope. The relationship between Brie, Brady, and Mike is another constant source of debate among viewers.
Almost everyone agrees that Denny and Lizzie shouldn’t be a couple. Viewers strongly dislike them, often skipping over their scenes, and there’s a lot of discussion online about how much people dislike the pairing.
A common criticism of the show is the acting of Kai Bradbury and Sarah Dugdale, though I don’t share that opinion. Many viewers also find the character Denny unsettling. Another frequent complaint is Lizzie’s rapid improvement in skills – it feels unrealistic given her initial rebellious nature. Finally, most people feel there’s a lack of romantic connection between Denny and Lizzie.
Lizzie’s Postpartum Anxiety Storyline Redeems The Couple
Just to refresh your memory, Mel and Cameron became a couple near the end of season four of Virgin River, shortly after Lizzie and Ricky split up. According to the show’s timeline, they were together for about six weeks when Lizzie found out she was pregnant with Denny’s baby. They then argue about whether to test the baby for Huntington’s disease, but Denny eventually convinces her to do so after the baby is born.
Season 7 of Virgin River begins with Lizzie welcoming her baby daughter, Fumiko, who everyone calls Koko. The new season also seems to offer a redemption arc for the show’s most disliked couple, as hinted at in the trailer. While Lizzie is understandably protective of her newborn, her protectiveness quickly becomes excessive.
Lizzie becomes increasingly worried about Koko getting sick and starts refusing to let anyone else hold her, even after her mom thoroughly washes her hands. When she has to leave Koko for the first time, she becomes extremely anxious and packs an excessive amount of supplies. This anxiety reaches its peak when she’s at Jack’s Bar, leading her to lock herself in the bathroom.
Alexandra Breckenridge is typically the strongest performer in each season of Virgin River, but Sarah Dugdale truly shines in season 7. She brilliantly portrays Lizzie’s increasing worry through her physical presence and nuanced facial expressions. These subtle details build throughout the season, making Lizzie’s eventual emotional breakdown incredibly moving.
Throughout the story, Denny consistently tries to support Lizzie, and his worry becomes more and more apparent. This is Kai Bradbury’s strongest performance yet on Virgin River, and he truly delivers, particularly through his voice. Importantly, this storyline gives Denny a positive arc – he’s shown as a proactive and caring figure, rather than being involved in something sad or unsettling.
Throughout the seventh season of Virgin River, Lizzie and Denny experience a noticeable shift in their relationship. Initially, there’s some friction, but as the season progresses, they develop genuine affection. They have the strongest connection they’ve ever shared, learning to work together more effectively. Denny offers Lizzie support and understanding, and she genuinely celebrates his successes, showing they’ve moved beyond simply tolerating each other to actually liking one another.
Denny and Lizzie aren’t likely to become one of the show’s most beloved couples, and probably never will – one good storyline isn’t enough to change that. But, surprisingly, the couple that viewers love to hate on Virgin River is starting to feel a little more understandable.
