In the galaxy of Star Wars, the Jedi aren’t particularly well-liked due to their tendency to overlook evil when it’s close by, and their strict rules often drive away those who could bring change. Ahsoka Tano, a Padawan with exceptional combat skills during the Clone Wars, frequently clashes with the Jedi Council. Despite her proven abilities, they distrust her after someone falsely accuses her of a bombing at the Temple, leading to her departure from the Order and leaving her master, Anakin Skywalker, behind. With Ahsoka gone, Anakin becomes more vulnerable to the dark side, and it’s not long before Chancellor Palpatine exploits this weakness, targeting the Chosen One.
One intriguing aspect of the dark side lies in its promise of unrestricted power and self-assurance for those who wield the Force. It’s a realm free from rules, where Sith can innovate methods to bolster their influence and might. The prequel trilogy effectively portrays the dark side as an alluring luxury, which perhaps Star Wars should have anticipated when introducing a significant Sith figure in 2024.
The Star Wars Prequel Trilogy Makes the Sith Every Bit as Cool as the Jedi
In the Star Wars prequel trilogy, the story of the Sith beings with Darth Maul in ‘The Phantom Menace’. The Zabrak warrior is initially encountered by the Jedi on Tatooine as he tries to capture Queen Padmé Amidala. Qui-Gon Jinn manages to halt the Sith, but their encounter doesn’t end there. On Naboo, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan Kenobi cross paths with Maul again, who brandishes his double-bladed red lightsaber and demonstrates his Force abilities. In this confrontation, Maul delivers a fatal blow to Qui-Gon by piercing him through the chest with a lightsaber. Overwhelmed, Obi-Wan takes over and defeats the Sith Lord by splitting him in two. Although it seems Maul perishes during the battle, his dramatic entrance paves the way for more significant events to unfold.
In the movie “Star Wars: Attack of the Clones”, Count Dooku stands beside Palpatine, readying himself to instigate the conflict between the Republic and the Separatists. Although Dooku might not be as intimidating physically compared to his former role, he demonstrates exceptional lightsaber prowess, effortlessly overpowering Anakin and Obi-Wan. However, in their next encounter, he meets his demise at the hands of Anakin, upon Palpatine’s command. Subsequently, Palpatine informs Anakin, who is progressing towards his own Sith initiation, about his former master, Darth Plagueis the Wise. It took close to 20 years for Plagueis to make his live-action debut, but after he did, events began unraveling rapidly.
All the Build-Up to Darth Plagueis Was for Nothing
In the prequel trilogy, Plagueis has already perished, thus he doesn’t make an appearance on the big screen. However, in the world of small screens, such as Disney+ series like Star Wars: The Acolyte, events unfold years before The Phantom Menace. In this series, a string of Jedi deaths occurs across the galaxy, and the prime suspect is former Jedi Padawan Osha Aniseya. However, it’s revealed that she’s not the mastermind; instead, her sister Mae Aniseya, who was believed to be dead, is working with a villain called the Stranger. During this struggle between the Jedi and the dark side user, Osha finds herself in league with the Stranger, using him as a means to find her sister. As the Stranger and Osha converse about their schemes, a figure emerges from the shadows in the distance: Darth Plagueis.
In that instant, it’s evident that the Stranger’s accomplishments are entirely due to Plagueis, his mentor. Regrettably, The Acolyte, which was abruptly terminated after just one season, failed to delve deeply into the intriguing Plagueis revelation, reducing it to a fleeting moment in the series. Fans’ dismay was profound, as they had eagerly anticipated learning more about the being who turned Palpatine into a Sith Lord for over two decades. However, there remains a glimmer of hope, as Star Wars is known for weaving stories further. The Acolyte might resurface in comic book form, or perhaps Plagueis could get his own canonical book. While these possibilities won’t fully heal the pain of squandering Plagueis in live-action, they are preferable to leaving him entombed forever.
Star Wars: The Acolyte is streaming on Disney+.
