1 Year On, DC’s Most Recent TV Masterpiece Is Now Set Up To Perfectly Pay Off Its Cliffhanger

The next Batman movie, which exists outside the main DC Universe storyline, might not continue a particular plot thread, but this could allow the highly-rated DC series to resolve a major cliffhanger from its first season. Released in 2022, The Batman introduced Robert Pattinson as a darker take on the iconic hero and Zoë Kravitz as a fresh and compelling Catwoman, following in the footsteps of legendary actresses like Eartha Kitt and Michelle Pfeiffer. However, Kravitz’s role in future Batman stories set outside the main DC continuity might be uncertain.

During a recent episode of the podcast The Hot Mic, Jeff Sneider hinted that Zoë Kravitz might not be returning as Catwoman in The Batman: Part II (according to a post on X). In the first Batman film, Selina Kyle, after assisting Bruce Wayne with saving a mayoral candidate, decided Gotham City was hopeless and left him to continue the fight alone. This has led to speculation that her story arc may be over, but there’s a clear path for her return to the Batman universe if not in the sequel.

We’re hearing that during recent press events for ‘Caught Stealing,’ publicists reportedly asked journalists to avoid questioning Zoe Kravitz about ‘The Batman Part II.’ According to a source, this was because she isn’t involved in the sequel and has no information about it. It’s currently unclear if this is accurate, but…

How Selina Kyle’s Story Can Continue in The Penguin Season 2

After the success of The Batman, Matt Reeves continued the story in the TV series The Penguin (2024). The series was well-received by critics and focused on Oz Cobb (Colin Farrell) and Sofia Gigante (Cristin Milioti) as they climbed the ranks of Gotham’s criminal world. Sofia Gigante was the daughter of crime boss Carmine Falcone (played by John Turturro and Mark Strong), and Cobb had previously worked for him. This connection links Sofia to Selina Kyle from The Batman, as Selina was also Falcone’s daughter – though illegitimate – making the two women half-sisters.

The first season of The Penguin ends with a tantalizing cliffhanger: Sofia Gigante, still locked up in Arkham Asylum, receives a letter from Selina Kyle. Fans are eager for a second season, and many believe it would be a great opportunity to bring back Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman and explore a dynamic with her half-sister, Sofia. While the cast and crew have given conflicting reports, Matt Reeves has hinted at discussions about continuing the show, though Colin Farrell suggests a second season isn’t guaranteed.

Catwoman began as a foe of Batman in DC Comics, and was originally one of his biggest enemies. Though recent movies and shows often portray her as an antihero, the second season of The Penguin could explore her darker side by pairing her with Sofia Gigante. Sofia proved to be a truly frightening villain in season one, and a team-up could give Zoë Kravitz a chance to play a more complex Catwoman, delving into unexplored parts of the character’s history.
