A beloved science fiction anime, considered a classic, is getting a fresh reboot this summer. A new trailer and poster have just revealed the release date. Over the past few years, many classic anime series have been revived with new projects and reboots, giving a new generation of fans a chance to enjoy timeless stories. Now, it’s Ghost in the Shell‘s turn, and this will be yet another reboot for the franchise.

A fresh anime adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s celebrated manga, The Ghost in the Shell, is arriving after almost ten years. The latest trailer and poster suggest this reboot will closely follow the original’s iconic style. Set to premiere in Japan on July 7th, you can find the trailer and poster below.

When Does the New Ghost in the Shell Anime Come Out?

The new anime series, Ghost in the Shell, is scheduled to premiere in Japan on July 7, 2026, as part of the summer anime season. It will be available worldwide on Prime Video shortly after its release. The reboot is a collaboration between Bandai Namco Filmworks, Kodansha, and Production I.G., with Moko-chan directing the series – their first time as an anime director – at Science SARU. Toh Enjoe is writing the scripts, Shuhei Handa is the character designer and chief animation director, and Ryo Konishi and Yuki Kanesaka are composing the music.

Over the years, Ghost in the Shell has been adapted into anime several times, with each version offering a unique interpretation of the original manga. Fan reactions have varied, with some adaptations being more popular than others. The most recent attempt faced criticism for its switch to computer-generated animation and changes to the character designs. However, this new redesign is generating excitement, especially considering the production team’s previous success with popular shows like DAN DA DAN.

What’s the New Ghost in the Shell About?

The trailer for Ghost in the Shell gives us a glimpse of the story, set in Japan in 2029. The world is highly connected and dominated by powerful corporations, but nations and cultures still exist. Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg who leads a skilled combat team alongside Batou, is planning to form a special unit to stop potential dangers before they arise.

Daisuke Aramaki, from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, was already working on creating a team like this and brought Kusanagi and her crew on board. Together, they formed Public Security Section 9, nicknamed ‘Shell Squad,’ and started tackling tough cybercrimes and global conspiracies. During their investigations, they discovered a mysterious hacker known only as the ‘Puppet Master.’ The story follows Kusanagi as she tries to uncover the Puppet Master’s motives and what the future holds for them both, marking the start of a new, exciting cyberpunk adventure.
