Many fantastic science fiction TV shows don’t last as long as their fans would like. While classics like Star Trek and Doctor Who have run for decades, and Stargate SG-1 enjoyed ten seasons, the genre is full of series that were unfortunately cancelled after just a short time. A prime example of a sci-fi show ending too soon is Firefly. Despite filming 14 episodes, Fox only aired 11 – and not even in the intended order – before cancelling it in 2002.
Even now, many fans consider the show a science fiction masterpiece of the 21st century. Though it continued briefly with the movie Serenity and in comic books, people have long hoped for a full revival. Could that finally be happening? Recent posts on Instagram from the podcast Once We Were Spacemen, hosted by stars Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk, show Fillion visiting other cast members from the show – Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, and Jewel Staite. In the videos, he simply tells them, “it’s time,” leaving fans to wonder what that means.
Is A Firefly Reboot Happening? What Nathan Fillion Could Be Teasing

Nathan Fillion and his team haven’t revealed what they’re hinting at yet, but they’ve announced they’ll share details on March 15th. This date happens to be when Fillion and several other actors will be at AwesomeCon in Washington, DC for a panel discussion. While the announcement builds excitement for the convention, it suggests there will be a larger reveal during the event itself.
We’re still not sure what’s happening, but we know what it isn’t. A recent post clarified that it’s not a fan convention, a podcast recording, or a crossover event. That means the cast won’t be reuniting on the Once We Were Spacemen podcast, and fans hoping for a Firefly and The Rookie crossover will be disappointed.
As a huge fan, I’d love to see a Firefly reboot, and honestly, the idea keeps popping up! But realistically, it feels pretty unlikely at this point. Something that big would have leaked by now, and getting a show like that made – especially with it originally being on Fox – would be a huge logistical challenge for a streamer like Hulu or Disney+. Still, the fact that they’re rebooting Buffy the Vampire Slayer – even with Joss Whedon no longer involved – gives me a tiny bit of hope. You just never know!
The future could hold various options, like a new game, more comics, or even an animated series – which would allow the story to continue directly without dealing with the years that have passed. However, a simple cast reunion seems more probable, maybe a special on a streaming service where everyone looks back at the show. With the 25th anniversary coming up next year, that would be a natural fit. The recent hints have created a lot of buzz, so hopefully, whatever it is lives up to the anticipation.
Firefly is available to stream on Hulu.
