Hey there! You know Iron Man? He’s got a special armor suit for every occasion. He’s been through loads of different armor designs and models, some made to tackle specific threats he or Earth might face. One of his most famous alternate suits is the Hulkbuster, designed to do battle with the Green Giant himself. But there are plenty of other awesome armors that often get overshadowed by the Hulkbuster’s fame. Today, let’s check out ten of Iron Man’s lesser-known suits that even surpass the Hulkbuster in power (though they might not be as powerful in theatrics). So, without further ado, let’s get started!
10) Explorer Armor
The all-black variant of Tony’s iconic suit doesn’t come equipped with extra weaponry, but that’s because it was designed primarily for survival rather than combat. This suit first appeared in Iron Man volume six #25, where Tony donned it to traverse the freezing landscape of Jotunheim in pursuit of Thor Odinson who was deemed unworthy at the time. Remarkably, this suit withstood temperatures as low as -157 degrees Fahrenheit for eight consecutive days without any harm befalling Tony. Furthermore, it absorbs water and nutrients from its surroundings, providing them to its wearer. It can also recharge using solar energy, in addition to its arc reactor, and boasts a sophisticated AI named B.R.I.A.N., an expert in all aspects of survival. In high winds, the suit even transforms its feet into clamps for stabilization, which I find quite intriguing. This suit deviates from the typical notion that “new suit equals more power,” instead focusing on a specific purpose and demonstrating Tony’s readiness for any challenge he encounters.
9) Excalibur Armor
In this retelling, when Doctor Doom pilfered the mystical sword capable of slicing through any substance, it fell upon Iron Man to confront him. This necessitated a reluctant acceptance of something he deeply abhorred: magic. This armor, reminiscent of medieval design, was an upgraded variant of his Model 9 suit, having been integrated with the scabbard of the legendary blade. Instead of relying on conventional power sources, this enchanted armor functioned through raw willpower, significantly boosting its capabilities. The enhanced version was more powerful than ever before, emitting beams of pure magic rather than the usual repulsor rays. However, the most remarkable aspect was its complete invincibility. Within this armor, Iron Man became immune to harm, and not even Excalibur, a sword that could cut through anything, could breach it. This suit first appeared in “Iron Man: Legacy of Doom” #3 but only lasted for two issues. Yet, witnessing an invulnerable Iron Man was truly awe-inspiring.
8) Iron Destroyer
In the tale known as “Fear Itself”, the sinister sibling of Odin, the Serpent, transformed several powerful Marvel characters into his loyal warriors and turned them loose as destructive forces worldwide. To take on combatants such as the Hulk and Thing, who were not only super-powered but also intent on death, Tony Stark journeyed to Asgard to remodel his Bleeding Edge Armor using Uru, a mystical metal that is integral to Mjolnir. The Bleeding Edge armor, which was a nano-tech device stored within Tony’s body, had the ability to adapt into various types of weaponry as needed. However, by incorporating Uru, it significantly increased both the power and toughness of this suit. This enhanced armor allowed Tony to engage in battle with any Worthy of the Serpent, combining the magical prowess of Asgard with the boundless ingenuity of Tony’s inventions. To top it off, the armor looked truly magnificent.
7) Dragon Slayer Armor
This armor was designed to combat the Extrembiote, one of Knull’s Symbiote Dragons, which Tony Stark infected with the Extremis virus for use of its DNA to save Eddie Brock from life-threatening injuries. After Cletus Cassidy bonded with the Extrembiote and assimilated a Stark Sentinel, Tony Stark put on this suit and joined forces with Miles Morales (Spider-Man) to subdue him. This suit is extremely stylish. It incorporates sonic technology to repel symbiotes and can produce constructs like a lance and shield from hard-light, much like the Green Lantern’s power ring. Additionally, it possesses an EMP strong enough to destroy the Extrembiote, but this also damages the suit’s electronics. One of its most impressive features is that it contains nanites which can accelerate healing and even generate an entire Iron Spider Suit when someone is injured. A secondary suit hidden within the primary one is an ingenious concept.
6) Endo-Sym Armor
Following the moral transformation of Tony Stark into a formidable villain in Axis, he completely revamped his life from scratch, starting with his iconic armor. He designed a liquid-metal suit inspired by symbiotes’ functionality and fused it intimately with his body, unlike any other suit before. This suit operated solely on Tony’s thoughts, making it independent of any technological components that could be exploited or disabled. It was remotely controllable by Tony’s mind and possessed the ability to reconnect with him if ever separated.
This innovative suit was not only incredibly potent and versatile but also one of Tony’s most stylish designs. The crisp white color with blue accents embodied sophistication, and the open face mask, contrasting his typical suits, showcased his characteristic smirks that once were diabolical but are now synonymous with the Superior Iron Man. This look not only highlights his transformation but also subtly illustrates the depth of his vanity, offering a captivating glimpse into what an amoral Iron Man would appear like.
5) Fin Fang Foombuster
The armor, often referred to as the Twenty-Story Iron Man, made its appearance in Tony Stark: Iron Man #1 when Fin Fang Foom threatened New York City. With immense power, this armor was used to drive the dragon back into the ocean. Initially, it takes form as two colossal repulsor cannons that can singlehandedly obliterate enemies. However, they later merge with the central cockpit to create this titan of steel and force. Standing at a whopping twenty stories tall, this armor is essentially a collection of smaller, autonomous spacecrafts. Essentially, it’s like an Iron Man-version of the Power Rangers’ Megazord, and isn’t that just cool? This suit activates a primal desire within us to watch a giant robot demolish targets, and that’s all it takes to be captivating.
4) Godbuster Armor
What’s more potent than an armor built to withstand Hulk’s attacks? An armor designed for defeating gods. In the virtual reality system eScape (created by Tony Stark), a self-aware operating system, Motherboard, gained control and became overly powerful within the digital realm. It even displayed abilities comparable to some of Marvel’s strongest characters. However, Motherboard wasn’t the only one flexing her muscles – inside eScape, Tony’s imagination was unleashed from human brain limitations, allowing him to design an armor stronger than anything he’d ever imagined before. He used this new armor to vanquish Motherboard within her domain, then 3D printed it for defeating the Controller with ease. Afterward, in the real world, Tony found the armor too powerful and chose to destroy it along with the devices that created it. Although this armor only appeared in issues #10 to #11 of Tony Stark: Iron Man, it remains one of Tony’s most impressive creations.
3) Iron God
During their fight against Korvac in Iron Man volume six issue 14, Tony Stark and his allies immersed themselves in the Power Cosmic. This transformation re-forged Tony’s Iron Man armor into the Iron God armor, which took on a likeness of the Silver Surfer. The Power Cosmic granted the Iron God omniscience and the ability to traverse the universe instantly with mere thought. After trapping Korvac in another dimension, Tony decided to make everyone in New York City as intellectually gifted as himself – unintentionally reducing Mr. Fantastic’s intelligence in the process. Using his newfound power, Tony ruled over NYC like a deity, stripping people’s intelligence when they broke the law and even killing his friends who attempted to seize the Power Cosmic. In the end, he restored everything to its original state and relinquished the power, realizing it was too perilous to wield.
2) Virtual Armor
In the comic book Iron Man 2020 volume two issue 5, we witness the climax of the story where Tony Stark’s brother Arno assumes the Iron Man identity and builds the Godbuster Armor for himself, causing Tony to embark on a personal quest to stop him. This leads to the creation of Tony’s most remarkable invention – the Virtual Armor.
The Virtual Armor is a cutting-edge holographic suit, formed from the entirety of the eScape platform. It can take on any shape or form that Tony requires, only limited by his creativity. Tony declared it as his best creation yet and it rendered the Godbuster Armor obsolete. With minimal effort, Tony destroyed what was once considered his masterpiece, and then used the Virtual Armor to imprison his insane brother within a simulated reality tailored to his desires. This virtual armor can accomplish anything Tony envisions, thus symbolizing Tony’s relentless pursuit of the future.
In essence, this armor represents the embodiment of Tony Stark as the epitome of future-oriented innovation.
1) Celestial Hulkbuster
Instead of settling for the conventional Hulkbuster suit, why not go above and beyond with a version that surpasses it in every aspect? Don’t be deceived by the title. This isn’t just a larger suit equipped with additional weapons; this armor is unique because it was crafted from the remains of a deceased Celestial. In “Thor” volume six, issue #25, a conflict between Thor and an uncontrollable Hulk threatened to shatter the world. Previously, this Celestial had been killed by Knull, who intended to use it to obliterate Earth. After Knull was defeated, the celestial’s corpse remained. Always one to maximize resources, Tony Stark repurposed the dead cosmic entity into one of the most stunningly designed armors ever featured in comic books. Just look at its design, its pose, and those wings! This armor is truly impressive, and isn’t that what we all secretly desire from an Iron Man suit?
