10 Batmen From Around the World

Batman is among the most impactful superheroes ever, renowned for his distinctive costume and absence of superpowers. His story underscores the power of determination, wealth, intelligence, and a versatile utility belt. Often hailed as The Dark Knight, Batman has motivated countless individuals worldwide to embrace heroism and combat injustice. Expanding his impact beyond Gotham City, Batman established two global teams – the Batmen of All Nations and Batman Incorporated. Today, from Argentina to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, there are heroes inspired by Batman, ready to battle crime and protect the innocent.

Besides Gotham City, there are other locations where a masked guardian is needed. Here are ten international heroes who put on their masks, inspired by Batman.

Apart from Gotham City, there are several other cities that could benefit from a protector wearing a mask. These are ten international heroes who were motivated by Batman to take up the mantle and protect their own communities.

1) Knight and Squire

As a passionate cinephile, I’d like to share some insights about an extraordinary British crime-fighting duo that carries a fascinating resemblance to Batman and Robin – a legacy born from their initial inception. Known as The Knight and Squire, this father-son team, the Sheldrakes, drew inspiration from the thrilling exploits of the Caped Crusader and his sidekick.

In their original form, the duo was Percy and Cyril Sheldrake. Percy, a man of extraordinary resilience, donned a magical suit of armor that boosted his toughness. After the untimely demise of Percy, young Cyril took up the mantle of The Knight.

To aid him in his mission, Cyril adopted an orphan girl named Beryl Hutchinson, who soon became his loyal Squire. Together, they defended Britain for years, eventually joining Batman Incorporated and the Batmen of All Nations. Tragically, Cyril lost his life while serving his country, leaving behind a void that could only be filled by his protegee.

Beryl stepped up to continue her mentor’s legacy, inheriting the mantle and continuing their noble fight for justice in Britain. The Knight and Squire live on as symbols of bravery, resilience, and unwavering dedication to their homeland.

2) Mr. Unknown

Originally, Tokyo’s longtime guardian, Mr. Unknown, was tragically slain by the malevolent figure known as Lord Death Man. After his demise, his friend, detective Jiro Osamu, stepped into the role of Mr. Unknown. An encounter with Batman ensued when he arrived in Japan to probe the murder of the original Mr. Unknown. Batman harbored reservations about Jiro assuming the new Mr. Unknown identity, as he employed a gun and sought vengeance against Lord Death Man. Yet, to avoid being ruled by his anger, Jiro made the choice to forgo firearms and abandon his desire for retribution against Lord Death Man. Instead, he apprehended the culprit lawfully. Touched by Jiro’s emotional evolution, Batman deemed him deserving of the Mr. Unknown title. Nowadays, Jiro battles crime in Japan and globally as a part of Batman Incorporated.

3) Nightrunner

Bilal Asselah, also known as Nightrunner, is a French-Algerian vigilante who stands guard over the streets of Paris. Following the horrific murder of his friend Aarif at the hands of Parisian law enforcement, Bilal took up the mantle of Nightrunner to combat crime and support France’s marginalized Muslim community. During an investigation into a child-trafficking ring in Paris, Batman and Nightwing crossed paths with Bilal, and the three teamed up to dismantle the criminal organization and save the children. Impressed by his assistance, Batman and Nightwing extended an invitation for Bilal to join Batman Incorporated, and Nightwing even tutored him in martial arts to improve his crime-fighting abilities.

4) Man-of-Bats and Red Raven

Dr. William “Bill” Great Eagle, a member of the Sioux tribe, was raised on a Native American Reservation in South Dakota. He transformed into the hero Man-of-Bats to safeguard his community. Bill’s son, Charles Great Eagle, followed suit as the hero Red Raven, joining their father in his mission. Unlike Batman, they are not wealthy and do not have access to vast resources. Instead, they focus on healing injured people through medicine and engaging in social activism. Man-of-Bats uses funds from Batman to aid the reservation. Bill and his son are honored members of both the Batmen of all Nations and Batman Incorporated and stand ready to combat villains whenever necessary.

5) El Gaucho

Santiago Vargas, known by his alias “El Gaucho,” is an Argentine crime-fighter who modeled himself after Batman. Originally a secret agent for Spyrall, Santiago later led a lavish lifestyle as a millionaire playboy. Yet, the thrill of adventure was missing, and he yearned for his past exploits. Drawing inspiration from Batman’s actions, Santiago transformed into the superhero, El Gaucho, and now patrols the streets of Buenos Aires to combat crime. Similar to Batman, El Gaucho employs specialized tools such as bolas and electrified brass knuckles in his fight against lawlessness. Over time, his heroics earned him membership in both the international team, Batmen of All Nations, and Batman Incorporated.

6) Dark Ranger

Originally hailing from Australia, the Dark Avenger was a masked crusader modeled after Batman. Equipped with a jetpack and a laser weapon, he dedicated his life to combating crime. Accompanying him was his young companion, Johnny Riley, also known as Scout. The Dark Avenger was a part of the Batmen from Around the World until his fellow member, Wingman, turned traitor and took his life. However, Dark Avenger’s influence lived on as Johnny adopted the mantle. True to the original hero’s path, Johnny joined both the Batmen of all Nations and Batman Incorporated.

7) Batwing

Initially, the first person to wear the Batwing suit was David Zavimbe, who devoted his life to protecting the innocent in the Democratic Republic of Congo. As a child, David was forced to become a soldier for a local warlord, but he eventually escaped this life. Later on, he joined the police force and battled against training camps that recruited child soldiers. Batman, appreciating David’s assistance and recognizing the corruption in the local police department, provided him with a bat-themed suit. The Batwing suit granted David superhuman strength and the ability to fly. David worked alongside Batman Incorporated and the Justice League International for several years, but the emotional toll of his work led him to step down from the role. After retiring, Batman chose Luke Fox, a brilliant martial artist and friend’s son (Lucius Fox), as the new Batwing.

8) Gray Wolf

Hailing from Chechnya’s Kazbek region, Anzor, also known as Gray Wolf, is renowned for his mastery in martial arts and his muscular physique compared to a fortress. Luthor conducted hazardous experiments at Kazbek, which unfortunately led to a chemical leak that transformed the townsfolk into aggressively violent individuals. With Luthor fleeing the scene, it was left to Anzor to resolve the chaos he had created. To contain the situation, Anzor confined the entire village until a remedy could be found for their condition. Upon Batman Incorporated’s arrival to investigate the vanished villagers, Anzor took them as Luthor’s henchmen and launched an attack. Once both sides cleared up the confusion and cured the townspeople of their illness, Anzor was welcomed into the ranks of Batman Incorporated.

9) Wingman

As a passionate movie buff, I’ve come across the intriguing character of Wingman, a hero hailing from Sweden. The original Wingman was none other than Benedict Rundstrom, who chose to side with the international team of Batmen, known as the Batmen of All Nations.

However, success didn’t sit well with Benedict. He grew envious of Batman’s fame and decided to join forces with the sinister group, the Black Glove, in an attempt to bring down his fellow Batmen. Alas, Benedict’s plan backfired, as he was betrayed and met his end at the hands of John Mayhew, the Black Glove’s leader.

After Benedict, several individuals took up the mantle of Wingman, including Jason Todd for a brief stint. The identity of the last Wingman remains a mystery, but he found himself in Batman Incorporated until his life was tragically cut short by the Australian supervillain Corvus Cawl, who was a member of Joker Incorporated.

10) Bat-Man

In their endeavor to develop a Chinese equivalent of the Justice League, tech prodigy Wang Baixi was chosen as China’s version of Batman. Growing up in a clandestine institution known as the Academy of the Bat, funded by the government, Baixi honed his martial arts and engineering skills with the aspiration to become China’s Batman. Impressed by his combat prowess and technological aptitude, he was selected for the role. Baixi designed a transformable vehicle resembling a Batmobile, which could morph into a colossal mech suit, and a robotic companion named Robinbot. Being an ardent Batman fan, Baixi once requested the Dark Knight to sign his cape; alas, Batman declined.
