Autumn is rapidly approaching, replacing Summer in our rear-view windows. Although Fall’s official debut isn’t until October, it’s bringing back fan favorites such as Spy x Family, One-Punch Man, My Hero Academia, and Chainsaw Man on streaming platforms like Crunchyroll. If you’re looking to fill the time before Halloween, there are numerous new and classic anime available that will surely keep you entertained. This year has already been a bountiful one for new and returning anime, with some lesser-known treasures among them. With so many fresh releases flooding in, it might be difficult for fans to revisit their old favorites or catch up on the timeless classics.
September is an ideal time for catching up on all those fantastic anime you’ve been missing and the major shows you’ve been wanting to watch. As the sunny days and heat waves gradually fade away, and the chillier weather sets in, what could be more suitable than cozying up indoors with some exceptional anime? Keeping this in mind, here are 10 outstanding anime series to stream on Crunchyroll this September.
10) Grimgar: Ashes & Illusions
It appears that the craze for isekai series might be gradually waning (which is great news), but some of the most prominent and excellent ones in this genre continue to thrive among viewers. However, it’s important not to overlook a lesser-known isekai titled “Grimgar” that has yet to gain traction with mainstream fans.
In the spirit of an avid fan, I’d rephrase that for you:
“Hailing from Ao Jumonji’s captivating light novel series, Grimgar is no ordinary isekai tale. Unlike some stories where characters miraculously awaken as mighty warriors in a fantastical realm, recalling nothing of their past lives, Grimgar takes a refreshingly realistic turn. This isn’t about flashy power displays or sensational fan service, ahem, Mushoku Tensei, no sir! Instead, it’s an isekai that comes as close to authenticity as one can get. Our heroes don’t instantly transform into battle-hardened veterans; it takes them a good three episodes just to conquer their first goblin!
9) Hell’s Paradise
If you missed out on watching MAPPA’s anime adaptation of Hell’s Paradise when it premiered in 2023, don’t worry! You now have another chance, as the highly anticipated second season is set to air next January. Known for its exceptional animation quality, this series boasts fight scenes that are on par with Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen, but might even surpass them thanks to its intriguing characters and thought-provoking narrative.
The narrative unfolds around Gabimaru the Shinobi, a formidable warrior marked for death by his own village’s elder. After numerous unsuccessful execution attempts, Gabimaru is offered a chance at freedom: he must journey to a shrouded island to retrieve the Elixir of Life, a legendary artifact from which no one has ever returned.
8) Clevatess
Among the anime on this list, Clevatess stands out as one of the more recent additions. This series made its debut during the Summer 2025 anime season, but it was overshadowed by popular titles such as Dandadan, Kaiju No. 8, and The Summer Hikaru Died. However, don’t let its initial obscurity deter you; this new dark fantasy anime is definitely worth your attention, with its violent and gritty atmosphere reminiscent of Berserk, and a more profound narrative than one might expect.
The series centers around the titular character Clevatess, one of the four powerful creatures governing the world’s outer regions. For numerous centuries, the human-like species dwelling in the kingdom’s heart have been attempting to eliminate these beasts, with the intention of expanding their territories. However, when a group attempts to destroy Clevatess, they come to the conclusion that this aggression must cease and embark on a journey into the human realm, seeking answers as to why humans are so eager to destroy it.
7) Hunter x Hunter (2011)
Among the selections, it’s certain that at least one timeless piece is included. For the month of September 2025, we strongly advise immersing yourself in the 2011 animated series of “Hunter x Hunter” on Crunchyroll. This show is an adaptation of the classic manga by Yoshihiro Togashi, which started serialization in 1998 and is currently on a break. However, Madhouse’s take on this manga has earned its own recognition as a standalone classic.
The tale requires minimal preamble as Gon Freecss embarks on a journey to become a “Hunter” in search of his absent father, himself named Gon. This month, Hunter x Hunter is highly recommended due to fresh updates in the manga. Indeed, Togashi is actively working again, diligently producing panels and pages for the upcoming chapter.
6) The God of High School
Occasionally, you might yearn for an exhilarating action show that doesn’t hold back, and this September, “The God of High School” could be just the one to satisfy that craving. This series debuted in 2020 and made a decent impact when it first aired. Yet, it hasn’t managed to sustain the excitement or popularity it deserves, as other shows like “Solo Leveling” have captured the spotlight.
The animated series “The God of High School” showcases a wild plot that seems uniquely suited for anime. The narrative centers around Jin Mo-Ri, a remarkable 17-year-old student who is not only gifted in martial arts but is also exceptionally skilled. Jin receives an unforeseen invitation to participate in a high school martial arts tournament called “The God of High School,” which aims to crown the strongest contestant. However, as the competition unfolds, Jin discovers that there’s more than meets the eye regarding the tournament’s true intentions.
5) Lord of Mysteries
Is “Lord of Mysteries” considered an anime or not? Actually, it’s classified as a donghua (Chinese animation). Does that matter to us? Not at all! Because the standout gem of Summer 2025 is without a doubt worth your while, and you won’t regret one second invested in watching this mesmerizingly animated dark fantasy mystery on Crunchyroll.
The Chinese web novel “Lord of Mysteries” by Yuan Ye/Cuttlefish has been gradually gaining popularity on social media, and it’s highly recommended that people give this extraordinary series a read. The story is set in a steampunk rendition of Victorian England, where the protagonist, Zhou Mingrui, discovers himself inhabiting the body of the late Klein Moretti. As Zhou navigates his new identity, he embarks on a journey to uncover the circumstances surrounding Klein’s death, while simultaneously exploring his enigmatic powers as a Beyonder.
4) Given
As a fellow lover of heartwarming stories, I’d like to suggest we take a break from all the high-octane action and immerse ourselves in some beautifully melodic romance instead! Let’s dive into a world filled with everyday life moments, but with an extra dash of charm that only BL series can offer.
If you haven’t already fallen for “Given,” now might be your chance to jump on the bandwagon! Fans are always eager for an excuse to revisit this beloved BL romance, and I think this list entry could serve as just that. So, let’s get lost in the enchanting world of music, love, and friendship that “Given” has to offer!
According to the manga by Natsuki Kizu, the anime adaptation of “Given” was initially released as a mini-series in 2019, later extending into multiple full-length films. This show focuses on four high school students who form a band and the deepening romantic connections among them. With its timeless appeal, it’s no wonder why it’s considered a modern classic; if you haven’t watched it yet, what are you waiting for?
3) The Heike Story
Here’s another fantastic find: “The Heike Story” is, in my view, one of the most underappreciated anime productions out there. Produced in 2021 by Science SARU (Dandadan), this captivating series combines a heart-wrenching narrative with stunning visuals and action sequences that should be cherished by a wider fan base due to their exceptional quality.
13th Century-set series unfolds the story of the Taira Clan’s ascendancy and eventual demise. The narrative revolves around Biwa, a war orphan who possesses psychic abilities, who is adopted by the Taira Clan. Throughout her time with them, Biwa has visions of the Taira Clan’s impending destruction at the hands of the Minamotos.
2) Great Teacher Onizuka
The Great Teacher Onizuka,” if anything, deserves recognition as a hidden gem within the realm of anime. While many contemporary fans are captivated by series such as “Neon Genesis Evangelion,” “Akira,” “Dragon Ball,” and “Cowboy Bebop,” “The Great Teacher Onizuka” remains somewhat overlooked, biding its time for the same level of appreciation. Although the show may contain moments that could elicit discomfort from modern audiences, particularly in its early episodes, its narrative of transformation and personal development carries a universal appeal that transcends time.
The narrative revolves around Eikichi Onizuka, once a biker, now transitioning into a teacher at the esteemed Holy Forest Academy. He aims to leave his past of violence and excessive desires behind, but finds it more challenging than anticipated. Determined to excel as an exceptional educator, he strives not only for personal growth but also to positively impact the lives of his students.
1) My Hero Academia
As I countdown to its grand return on October 4th, I’ve been reflecting on the seven exhilarating seasons of “My Hero Academia.” Set in a universe teeming with legendary and rising superheroes, it’s an anime that’s an ideal gateway for comic book enthusiasts from the West. Yet, it stands tall as a remarkable battle shonen series in its own right, a testament to the visionary mind of creator Kohei Horikoshi. The world portrayed is one profoundly shaped by individuals gifted with extraordinary abilities, or Quirks, that can either bring about great good…or unleash unfathomable evil.
In the series titled “My Hero Academia“, we follow the story of Izuku Midoriya, a boy who is naturally Quirkless and seemingly ordinary. However, his life takes an extraordinary turn when he crosses paths with his idol, a superhero. Over the course of seven seasons, we’ve watched Midoriya, also known as “Deku”, battle dangerous villains alongside beloved characters at U.A. High School for Heroes, brought to life by the talented Studio Bones. To fully immerse yourself in this thrilling narrative before the upcoming episodes starting in October 2025, make sure to catch up on “My Hero Academia“.
