Spider-Man faces a huge variety of villains, many created by failed science experiments. But the Goblin villains – starting with Norman Osborn and the Green Goblin – are among his most frequent, relentless, and dangerous foes. Several criminals have taken up the Goblin mantle, either by choice or circumstance, continuing Osborn’s legacy. These villains, with their incredible power, complex schemes, and complete lack of sanity, consistently push Spider-Man to his limits and rank among Marvel’s most compelling bad guys.
Beyond just having the Goblin Formula, many Goblin villains use gliders, pumpkin bombs, and sharp throwing stars, making them dangerous and adaptable. Some simply wear masks to look monstrous, while others completely transform into terrifying creatures. With their memorable looks, twisted sense of humor, and evil plans, these Goblin villains have been central to some of Spider-Man’s most famous adventures.
10) Demogoblin

Demogoblin is unique among the Goblin villains as he’s a true demon, not just a person using Goblin technology. He originated when Jason Macendale, who was the Hobgoblin, attempted a magical ritual to gain power, but was instead possessed by a demon. Even after the demon was removed, it lingered on Earth and became Demogoblin. Now, desperately seeking redemption and a place in Heaven, Demogoblin harshly punishes anyone he deems a sinner, even for minor offenses, which often brings him into conflict with Spider-Man. Beyond the typical Goblin strength and speed, Demogoblin possesses dangerous magical powers and weapons, like Hellfire and pumpkin bombs that can emotionally incapacitate his enemies.
9) Monster

Following the controversial storyline that erased Spider-Man’s marriage, he began dating Carlie Cooper, a forensic specialist. Even after they broke up, Carlie found herself targeted by Norman Osborn and his Goblin Nation. Osborn chemically altered Carlie, transforming her into a monstrous villain called Monster and controlling her mind. As Monster, she attempted to kill Spider-Man, forcing him to search for a way to restore her. While Carlie has since been cured, her experience as a villain was deeply unfortunate.
8) Ultimate Hobgoblin

In any universe where Spider-Man exists, there’s bound to be a Goblin to oppose him. But the Goblins in the Ultimate Universe are different – they’re massive, fire-powered monsters created by a special serum, instead of using masks, pumpkins, and gliders. Like in many other worlds, Harry Osborn begins as Peter Parker’s close friend, but eventually becomes his enemy. Believing Spider-Man killed his father, Norman Osborn, Harry takes the Goblin serum and transforms into the powerful Hobgoblin, seeking revenge. With incredible strength and the ability to control fire, Harry proves to be a dangerous foe. Ultimately, however, he changes his ways and dies a hero while battling his father, who had been brought back to life as a villain.
7) Menace

It seems anyone connected to the Osborn family eventually falls into villainy. Lily Hollister, once engaged to Harry Osborn, stumbled upon Norman Osborn’s old Green Goblin gear. A touch of a new Goblin Serum drove her mad and gave her the ability to transform into a goblin. Calling herself Menace, she stole Green Goblin weapons and attacked the campaign of Lily’s father, who was running for mayor, hoping to gain him public support. She repeatedly clashed with Spider-Man and became part of Norman Osborn’s Goblin Nation. But after being cured of her insanity, Lily abandoned her life of crime and reinvented herself as the hero, Queen Cat.
6) Hobgoblin (Jason Macendale Jr.)

Jason Macendale Jr. started as the villain Jack O’Lantern before becoming the third Hobgoblin, expanding his criminal activity. Driven to defeat Spider-Man, he repeatedly changed himself, becoming a cyborg and even being possessed by a demon, transforming into the first Demogoblin. Though Roderick Kingsley, the original Hobgoblin, once killed him to take back the title, death is rarely permanent in comics. Jason was brought back to life and continues to plague New York City, relentlessly pursuing Spider-Man. He’s also famous as the Hobgoblin featured in the popular animated series, Spider-Man: The Animated Series.
5) Goblin King

Phil Urich, nephew of Daily Bugle reporter Ben Urich, had an unusual start as a superhero. After being exposed to the Goblin Formula, he used experimental Goblin armor to become a rare heroic Green Goblin. Sadly, the formula eventually damaged his mind, leading him to work for the Kingpin as the cruel and unstable fourth Hobgoblin, wielding a flaming sword. When Norman Osborn formed the Goblin Nation, Phil received upgraded armor and became the Goblin Knight. He later betrayed Norman, proclaiming himself the Goblin King, but Norman ultimately returned and killed him.
4) Ultimate Green Goblin

In the Ultimate Universe, Norman Osborn is one of the most dangerous and disturbed versions of the Green Goblin across the multiverse. He was a dishonest businessman experimenting with a super-soldier formula when an accident turned him into a large, green, scaly monster with the power to control fire. As the Green Goblin, he caused widespread destruction and was responsible for numerous deaths, including those of his own wife and son. He’s far more unstable and mentally ill than the Green Goblin in other universes, often experiencing hallucinations and acting like an animal. Like in most realities, he was Spider-Man’s greatest enemy, and they fought repeatedly. He even killed the original Ultimate Spider-Man and later targeted Miles Morales as his next target.
3) Hobgoblin (Roderick Kingsley)

Roderick Kingsley is widely considered the original and most dangerous Hobgoblin, and a major enemy of Spider-Man. He’s a ruthless and corrupt businessman who craved power, leading him to seek out the Goblin Formula from Norman Osborn. Unlike many other Goblin villains, Roderick isn’t mentally unstable—he’s simply cold, calculating, and determined to build a criminal empire by defeating Spider-Man. For years, his true identity remained a mystery, and he even went so far as to frame Spider-Man’s friend, Ned Leeds, to cover his tracks. Even after his identity was revealed, Roderick continued to be a significant threat to Spider-Man, solidifying his place as the definitive Hobgoblin.
2) Green Goblin (Harry Osborn)

Harry Osborn, Peter Parker’s best friend, has one of the most heartbreaking stories in Marvel Comics. After his father, Norman Osborn, died fighting Spider-Man, Harry became consumed by hatred for the hero. Discovering Peter was Spider-Man drove him to madness, leading him to take a dangerous formula and become the second Green Goblin. It was a devastating situation, forcing Spider-Man to battle someone he considered a brother. Harry constantly battled his inner demons and an addiction to the formula, slipping between villainy and attempts at redemption. Despite his struggles, Harry ultimately died a hero, sacrificing himself to save Peter, MJ, and his own son from a bomb.
1) Green Goblin (Norman Osborn)

Norman Osborn is one of the most famous villains in comic books, originally known as the Green Goblin and Spider-Man’s greatest enemy. As the wealthy CEO of Oscorp, he gained incredible strength and intelligence after a lab accident involving an experimental formula. However, the accident also drove him insane, leading him to create the Green Goblin identity and attempt to control New York’s criminal world. He intensely disliked Spider-Man and was determined to defeat him, especially after learning the hero’s secret identity, vowing to harm everyone Spider-Man cared about. Some of his most shocking actions include the death of Gwen Stacy and a plot that made it appear as though Aunt May had died. While he’s shown signs of change in recent stories, Norman Osborn will always be remembered as the classic Green Goblin and Spider-Man’s most dangerous foe.
