Mark Grayson, also known as Invincible, is a hugely popular superhero who has become one of Image Comics’ biggest successes. Many consider his comic series a groundbreaking work that explores themes like what it means to be a hero, family relationships, dealing with trauma, and the impact of one’s legacy. The story centers on Mark, a teenager who is half-human, half-Viltrumite, and the son of Omni-Man, Earth’s most powerful hero. The recent Amazon Prime TV series has made Invincible even more popular, with Season 4 arriving on March 18th. The show largely adapts the many compelling storylines from the comics, delivering both intense action and deep character development. Here are some of the best stories from the Invincible comic series.
The Invincible comic is famous for telling one continuous story, which means its individual story arcs aren’t always clearly defined. However, the series features many important events that happen over multiple issues and dramatically change the characters and the world they live in.
10) “Family Matters”

When launching a brand-new superhero separate from Marvel and DC, Invincible needed a compelling beginning to attract readers. The first storyline, “Family Matters,” did just that. Over the first four issues, we see teenager Mark Grayson develop powers similar to those of his father, Omni-Man, who is a Viltrumite. After learning to control his abilities, Mark becomes Invincible and starts a career as a superhero, battling villains and teaming up with heroes like Atom Eve. The story famously ends with a shocking reveal: Omni-Man brutally kills the Guardians of the Globe, launching a mystery with massive implications for Earth.
9) “Reboot?”

Invincible often thought about how things could have turned out differently, and the storyline “Reboot?” allowed him to actually change the past. In issues 124 through 126, Invincible finds a mysterious cave that sends him back to the very beginning of his journey, when he first got his powers. Using his knowledge of the future, he’s able to stop Omni-Man’s treachery, rescue the Guardians of the Globe, and prevent countless deaths from alien invasions. Despite all the tragedies he avoids, Invincible still longs to return to his own time and be with Atom Eve and their daughter. “Reboot?” presents Invincible with one of his most difficult moral challenges.
8) “What’s Happening?”

The story arc from issues #92 to #96, titled “What’s Happening?”, centers on the heroes Robot and Monster Girl. Previously, they traveled to the Flaxan Dimension to end the Flaxans’ invasions. This arc explores their experiences with the Flaxans and the consequences they face afterward. Because time passes much faster in the Flaxan Dimension, Robot and Monster Girl led and ruled the Flaxans for over 500 years, even though they only aged 12 years themselves. During their reign, Robot briefly became a cruel ruler, and Monster Girl led a revolt against him. When they return to Earth, a mysterious Flaxan arrives seeking revenge, forcing them to confront their past. It’s a surprising and complex story that significantly changes both heroes, for both good and bad.
7) “Invincible War”

A particularly grim storyline in Invincible began after the hero believed he’d defeated the villain Angstrom Levy. Issue #60 showed that Angstrom was not only still alive, but had been plotting to turn the world against Invincible. This plot escalated in “Invincible War,” where Angstrom released over a dozen evil duplicates of Invincible, causing widespread destruction. The only way to stop them was for all of Earth’s superheroes to team up. This event not only created tension and distrust among the heroes, but also became one of the largest crossover events in Image Comics’ history, featuring appearances from characters like Spawn, Savage Dragon, Youngblood, Witchblade, Shadowhawk, and Pitt, amidst a landscape of death and devastation.
6) “Friends”

One of the most shocking storylines in the Invincible comic series involves Robot’s decision to take over Earth, believing he can create a perfect society. The story arc, “Friends” (issues #109-115), begins after Robot imprisons Invincible in another dimension. Once Invincible returns, Robot puts his ruthless plan into action, using a powerful army of advanced drones to eliminate or capture anyone who might oppose him. The arc features the deaths of several beloved characters. Despite Invincible’s fight, Robot succeeds in taking control of the planet. “Friends” is a grim exploration of how good intentions – the desire for peace and a better world – can corrupt someone into doing terrible things to achieve their vision.
5) “The Death of Everyone”

A major misstep for Invincible occurs when he teams up with Dinosaurus, a supervillain who claims to be an eco-terrorist, with the goal of improving the environment. Invincible believes Dinosaurus has changed, but he’s proven wrong in the story arc “The Death of Everyone” (issues #98-100). Dinosaurus secretly unleashes devastating floods worldwide, killing millions, as part of a plan to drastically reduce the human population. Horrified by the consequences of his actions, Invincible tries to correct his mistake and finally defeat Dinosaurus. “The Death of Everyone” is a powerful and heartbreaking story that questions what it truly means to be a hero.
4) “Viltrumite War”

The Viltrumite Empire, composed of incredibly strong and brutal warriors who have taken over numerous worlds, served as the main villain throughout the Invincible series. The epic conflict known as the “Viltrumite War” (issues #71-78) saw Invincible and his allies in the Coalition of Planets attempt to finally defeat the Empire. This massive intergalactic war featured heroes like Invincible, Omni-Man, Tech Jacket, and Allen the Alien fighting for survival against formidable Viltrumite opponents such as Conquest and Grand Regent Thragg. The story concludes with a surprising cliffhanger and hints at a possible future where the Viltrumites might find redemption.
3) “Conquest”

Following the devastating “Invincible War,” Earth faces a new threat with the arrival of Conquest, a powerful Viltrumite. This storyline, spanning issues 61-64, pits Invincible against Conquest, who is tasked with forcing Invincible to rule Earth on behalf of the Viltrumite Empire. When Invincible refuses, Conquest happily demonstrates his immense power. A cruel and destructive villain, Conquest pushes Invincible to his absolute limit, and fuels a fierce determination in the hero to end the fight with lethal force. “Conquest” is a brutal, emotionally gripping story that showcases the characters and pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in comic books.
2) “Perfect Strangers”

The ‘Perfect Strangers’ arc is a pivotal moment in the Invincible series, exposing the shocking truth about Invincible’s father and his origins. Spanning issues #9 to #13, Invincible discovers that Omni-Man wasn’t a hero protecting Earth, but a scout preparing for a Viltrumite invasion. Devastated by this betrayal, Invincible is forced to fight his own father to defend the planet. This leads to a heartbreaking and violent battle where Invincible is severely beaten. ‘Perfect Strangers’ fundamentally changes the direction of the series, thrusting Invincible into the role of Earth’s primary protector and forcing him to confront the man he once admired most.
1) “The End of All Things”

The final arc of the Invincible comic, aptly named “The End of All Things” (issues #133-144), delivers a spectacular conclusion to the entire series. It brings together the combined might of Earth’s heroes, the Coalition of Planets, and even a reformed Viltrumite Empire to face off against the formidable Grand Regent Thragg and his hybrid army. Simultaneously, Invincible confronts Robot, finally aiming to end his oppressive rule over Earth. Each issue builds on the last, powerfully highlighting the core themes of the comic. After 15 years of storytelling, this arc provides satisfying resolutions for all the main characters and hints at exciting futures for them.
