One notable aspect of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” is its knack for surprising viewers right from the start. Even though we expect the gang from Paddy’s Pub to embark on another chaotic escapade within the episode, we are never sure what that adventure will entail. The show cleverly discloses this information through a series of intriguing openings. Usually, the five main characters engage in an argument about something seemingly unrelated or only slightly connected to the upcoming events, and then – boom! – the title card appears.
Leaving us just short of the mark were “Mac and Dennis Buy a Time-Share,” “The Nightman Cometh,” “The Gang Misses the Boat,” and “The Gang Takes Advantage of a Miracle.” To start, let’s delve into an episode from Season 2.
1) “Dennis and Dee Go on Welfare” (Season 2, Episode 3)
One standout “Always Sunny” episode, titled “Dennis and Dee Go on Welfare,” is renowned for introducing the long-running gag about Dennis and Dee getting addicted to crack cocaine. However, at the beginning of this episode, they harbored ambitious dreams – Dennis aspiring to be a veterinarian, and Dee aiming for an acting career.
Dennis and Dee decide it’s time to depart from Paddy’s permanently since Frank has joined the Gang. They can’t stand him, so they make their exit through the door. Mac informs them that the bar is everything they have, to which Dennis and Dee reassure him, “Don’t worry about us, Mac, we’ll manage on our own.” The scene transitions to the title card.
2) “The Gang Finds a Dumpster Baby” (Season 3, Episode 1)
For enthusiasts of Dennis Reynolds, “The Gang Finds a Dumpster Baby” episode serves as an early depiction of his self-absorbed and petty nature. It’s evident from the start that he harbors a sense of superiority, not only over others but also his friends.
In a conversation about “An Inconvenient Truth,” Dennis, Dee, and Mac find themselves at Paddy’s bar. Dennis appreciates the documentary, while Mac casually throws his drink against an adjacent building, nearby a dumpster. This action irks Dennis, who voices his disapproval, only to be teased by Dee and Mac for his sudden concern for the environment. In response, Dennis expresses a sense of self-righteousness, saying, “Oh, I’m sorry Dee, perhaps I want to contribute positively to this world, maybe even make an impact.” To which Dee retorts, “If you want to do good, you’re not very good at it.
When Dennis said he’s doing good, Mac suggested that Dennis only helps himself. As Dennis was about to continue saying something positive about himself, he stopped abruptly when he found a baby in the trash can, exclaiming “Wow!” Mac asked what was wrong, and Dennis, with a cold gaze, revealed there was a baby in the dumpster.
3) “Dennis and Dee’s Mom Is Dead” (Season 3, Episode 3)
At the start, Charlie unveils new throwing knives he bought from a magician. The trio of Dennis, Mac, and Charlie almost hurl these same knives towards Dee in what follows.
Frank unexpectedly enters Paddy’s with a cheerful demeanor, announcing, “I have some news!” His words are familiar to Dennis and Dee, but the joy on his face suggests this time it’s genuine. He reveals that their mother suffered a botched neck lift and has passed away, referring to her as being “as extinct as disco.” The rest of the group appears shocked, but Frank quickly changes the mood by asking, “Who’s up for champagne?” and proceeding to pop the cork. It’s quite a spectacle.
4) “The Gang Dances Their Asses Off” (Season 3, Episode 15)
The episode titled “The Gang Dances Their Hearts Out” cleverly showcases two of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s” most notable side characters. However, it also provides ample chances for the main group to interact and play off each other within their own home setting. Despite not being overly fond of Frank’s newfound habit of ranking them, each member secretly aspires to be ranked first.
Charlie’s prospects take a significant hit when he offers Paddy’s as the prize in a dance marathon, misunderstanding “Prize” as “Pride.” With their entire lives at stake, the group turns to Frank for guidance on their next move, and he responds with enthusiasm, “We’re going to give it our all on the dance floor!
5) “Dennis Gets Divorced” (Season 6, Episode 2)
In no time at all, it became clear that Dennis was growing weary of Maureen Ponderosa, an event we had anticipated. What caught us off guard, however, was the revelation that she transformed into a cat later on and unfortunately met her end by falling off a building (it’s suspected Dennis may have given her a push).
In the opening scene of “Dennis Gets Divorced,” Maureen is lying in bed, while Dennis departs from their joint bedroom to go to Paddy’s. He has placed money on the nightstand for her, which puzzles her since they are still legally married. With genuine emotion, she expresses her love for him, and he responds with a less heartfelt declaration of his own feelings before mimicking a choking gesture. Maureen feigns compliance and relaxes back on the pillow, but a deep sadness clouding his eyes sets in. The scene transitions to “Dennis Gets Divorced.
6) “Mac’s Mom Burns Her House Down” (Season 6, Episode 6)
Season 6’s “Mac’s Mom Burns Her House Down” starts with Dennis and Mac questioning Dee about why she’s trying to get rid of a cold quickly. She explains that it’s because she’s planning to attend a Josh Groban concert, which leaves the other two perplexed, thinking it’s Charles Grodin instead. This misunderstanding leads to some heated exchanges and yelling. As she departs from the bar, Frank tries to keep her at bay with a pool cue to avoid catching her germs.
After that, Charlie bursts into Paddy’s, loudly arguing with his mother (the deceased Lynne Marie Stewart) on the phone about her preposterous demands. Mac reprimands him for not treating his mother’s demands with more respect, to which Charlie responds by labeling them as “nonsense.” The phone at Paddy’s begins to ring, but Charlie doesn’t want to pick it up, assuming it’s his mother again. Mac insists he does, and Charlie says “It’s not something urgent, Mac.” He answers the call and says “Well, that is a significant matter. Uh, Mac, your mom accidentally set her house on fire.
7) “Sweet Dee Gets Audited” (Season 7, Episode 4)
The main theme in Season 6 involves Dee’s stand-in pregnancy (which aligns with Kaitlin Olson’s actual pregnancy off-screen). In Season 7’s “Sweet Dee Gets Audited,” she arrives at Paddy’s on a moped, beaming from ear to ear. It appears she has successfully cashed in the $30,000 from her surrogacy job.
The men unexpectedly assert they played a significant role in her baby project (they didn’t contribute at all). With a strong sense of confidence, Dee declares, “I’m the one who established all the connections. I delivered the baby, and now I plan to claim him as a dependent and enjoy tax benefits for the next 18 years. So you talk about a plan? Let me tell you, that’s a long-term strategy, ladies! You all better swallow your pride, because Sweet Dee outsmarted the system.” She gestures towards herself with her thumb and waggles her head from side to side with a broad grin. The song Temptation Sensation by Heinz Kiessling plays, followed by the title card.
8) “How Mac Got Fat” (Season 7, Episode 10)
As a dedicated film enthusiast, I can’t help but share an intriguing behind-the-scenes story about one of my favorite Mac-centric episodes, “How Mac Got Fat.” Believe it or not, this hilarious tale almost never saw the light of day. The flashback scenes featuring Mac’s avatar were actually from an unaired Season 6 episode titled “The Gang Gets Successful.” This episode didn’t make it to our screens for reasons unknown to me (perhaps there was simply not enough footage, or maybe Danny DeVito had a temporary leave of absence due to maternity reasons). Either way, I’m just grateful that the creative minds behind It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia were able to repurpose these scenes and give us such a memorable episode!
Rather than being used originally, the footage was adapted for a Season 7 episode and quite effectively so. In this episode, Mac visits a priest to discuss how he believes his friends are responsible for him gaining weight. The explanation behind his visit to the confessional becomes clear when Mac straightforwardly admits, “I’m fat.
9) “The Gang Tries Desperately to Win an Award” (Season 9, Episode 3)
The Gang’s Frenzied Attempt to Secure an Award” opens with Dennis, Dee, and Mac urging Charlie to don gloves while cleaning the bathrooms. Suddenly, Frank arrives and informs them that the Restaurant and Bar Association’s top award for best bars is imminent.
The rest of the group openly show they’re uninterested in this matter, even though they find it peculiar that it hasn’t been nominated for an award, like the Emmy. After pondering the absurdity of chasing awards and sucking up, Dennis expresses with a sigh, “Fine, let’s play along. However, I want to make something perfectly clear: this holds absolutely no significance for me.
10) “Mac Kills His Dad” (Season 10, Episode 7)
Luther McDonald, Mac’s father, is currently detained under accusations of decapitating a state’s witness using a traffic sign. He stands charged with capital punishment.
Mac expresses disbelief about the report’s claims, but the group confirms they find it credible. Convinced of his father’s innocence, Mac declares his intention to save his life. The episode title then appears: “Mac Saves His Father.
