10 Best LucasArts Star Wars Games, Ranked

Man, growing up, LucasArts owned Star Wars gaming. They made all the best games for a whole generation, before Disney came along and things changed. Seriously, those were the golden days!

LucasArts was responsible for many of the most beloved Star Wars games, but Disney later shut it down and created Lucasfilm Games. While Electronic Arts and Disney Interactive Studios have since made some great Star Wars games, they aren’t part of the original LucasArts collection. This means popular titles like Jedi Survivor and Fallen Order aren’t included. We looked back at the many Star Wars games LucasArts released between 1990 and 2021 and picked out the ten best.

10) Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

Released on the Super Nintendo in 1993, Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back continued the series that began with Super Star Wars in 1991. The game lets players control different characters and follows the story of both the movie The Empire Strikes Back and the original Super Star Wars. It improves on the first game with the addition of both primary and secondary weapons, as well as a double-jump ability. Critics praised the game’s well-designed levels and gameplay, which were a step up from the previous title. While a third game was released, The Empire Strikes Back is generally considered the best in the trilogy and the best Star Wars game available on the SNES.

9) Star Wars Episode I: Racer

Okay, so the first Phantom Menace movie gets some flak, but honestly, that pod racing scene was made to be a video game. That’s how we got Star Wars Episode I: Racer back in 1999, and it came out on everything! It’s all set on Tatooine, and you get to race all the characters and on the track from the movie, plus a bunch of new ones. They even got Jake Lloyd and Lewis MacLeod to come back as Anakin and Sebulba, which was awesome. It’s seriously as fun as you’d expect flying around in a pod racer to be. And get this – it’s the best-selling sci-fi racing game ever, and they’ve even re-released it on newer consoles, so you can still play it!

8) Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

Released in 2008, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed quickly became a fan favorite. The game features Galen Marek, also known as Starkiller (played by Sam Witwer), a hidden apprentice of Darth Vader. Set between the events of the prequel and original Star Wars trilogies, it connects those two eras with a compelling story. The Force Unleashed was praised for letting players use Force powers in more dynamic ways than ever before, thanks to improved technology. This made it a really enjoyable and immersive experience, and it led to a well-received sequel. With over 7 million copies sold, the game is celebrated for its stunning visuals, engaging story, realistic physics, excellent acting, and memorable soundtrack.

7) Star Wars: Battlefront II (2005)

Though a Star Wars: Battlefront II game came out in 2017, the original was created by a different company. Many fans still prefer the 2005 version, even though it was made for older consoles. This Battlefront II is the second game in the series and was released on all major gaming systems at the time. It includes new characters, vehicles, gameplay features, levels, and missions. The game has a campaign mode that lets you experience the Star Wars story through the eyes of a seasoned Imperial Stormtrooper. Battlefront II was a commercial success, selling over 6 million copies, and the online servers are still active as of today, even after being temporarily shut down a few times.

6) Star Wars: Empire at War

Released in 2006, Star Wars: Empire at War is a real-time strategy game that lets players experience the epic conflict between the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance. The game features three ways to play: a story campaign, individual skirmishes, and a galactic conquest mode. Battles unfold on planets and in space, with players commanding ground troops, fighter ships, and massive capital ships. Star Wars: Empire at War proved to be a hit, selling close to 7 million copies, and was later expanded with the Forces of Corruption expansion pack.

5) Star Wars: Republic Commando

In Star Wars: Republic Commando, you play as RC-1138, nicknamed “Boss,” who leads an elite squad of Clone Commandos. This squad consists of four genetically engineered Clone Troopers, and the game is a fast-paced, first-person shooter set during the Clone Wars. You can give orders to your squadmates, adding a layer of strategy to completing objectives. Republic Commando received a lot of positive attention for its story, engaging combat, and memorable characters, and is considered one of the best classic Star Wars first-person shooters. A remastered version is now available on newer gaming systems.

4) Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2

Released two years after the original Dark Forces in 1995, Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 builds on its predecessor with significant improvements to gameplay and technology. Players control Kyle Katarn, a New Republic mercenary, as he seeks revenge for his father’s murder and uncovers a larger mystery involving the Force and the legendary Valley of the Jedi. The game was notable for its time with branching storylines and full-motion video cutscenes. It also introduced lightsaber and Force powers, along with multiplayer options, cementing its status as a classic title from the 1990s.

3) Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader

Man, I still remember when Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader came out on the GameCube in 2001. It was a huge step up from the first game, which was already pretty awesome! You get to fly as both Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles, reliving the epic battles from all three original Star Wars movies. As you play, the missions get seriously challenging as the Rebel Alliance grows and fights back against the Empire. Honestly, the graphics, gameplay, and sound were incredible for the time, and it’s still the best Star Wars game on the GameCube in my opinion.

2) Star Wars: TIE Fighter

Released as the second game in the Star Wars: X-Wing series, Star Wars: TIE Fighter is a significant upgrade over the original. Instead of flying for the Rebel Alliance, players pilot an Imperial TIE Fighter and fight for the Empire – a change of perspective that many enjoyed. While the graphics may look a bit old-fashioned now, they were remarkably impressive when the game came out in 1994. It’s often ranked among the greatest video games ever made, and it remains the best Star Wars game for early ‘90s computers.

1) Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

Most Star Wars fans likely predicted Knights of the Old Republic would be number one on this list. Set 4,000 years before the Battle of Yavin, this role-playing game brought a lot of new ideas to the Star Wars universe. It’s widely considered to have one of the best stories in any Star Wars game, and is often called LucasArts’ greatest achievement, though it was actually developed by BioWare. A strong sequel followed, but many fans still believe the original Knights of the Old Republic is the superior game.
