Released in 2006, the series originally featured some of Marvel’s most compelling zombie characters. The recent MCU adaptation continues this trend, adding even more heroes transformed into flesh-eating monsters. These undead versions are focused solely on spreading the infection to other superpowered individuals and finding their next source of sustenance.
The Marvel Zombies comics feature some of the most memorable and terrifying zombies in the entire medium, including characters like Zombie Phoenix, Morbius the Vampire/Zombie, and the Queen of the Dead. These characters are popular due to their unique designs, powers, compelling stories, and sheer scariness. Fans are eager to see them return in both comic books and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Zombie Phoenix Could Have Ended Planets On Her Own
When the team regrouped, they gained a new member: Jean Grey, also known as the Phoenix. However, Jean wasn’t really herself; she was being sustained by the powerful Phoenix Force, essentially keeping her alive as a kind of life-form beyond death. The Phoenix Force explained that as a cosmic being, it couldn’t be consumed by the others, so they had to welcome her to the team.
While *Marvel Zombies* doesn’t spend much time on the Zombie Phoenix, she ultimately sacrifices herself to save others when the Zombie Galacti breaks apart. Given how incredibly powerful the Phoenix Force is, it would have been fascinating to learn more about what unique zombie abilities she possessed. Because the Phoenix Force is capable of destroying planets instantly, combined with the constant hunger of a zombie, she represented a massive danger to the entire universe.
Ghost Is Like a Horror Movie Character
Of all the beings created by Wanda Maximoff, Ghost is arguably the most frightening. This zombie-like version seems heavily influenced by horror movie villains, particularly characters like Samara or Sadako from The Ring. She’s recognizable by her long, dark hair and glowing red eyes, which show she’s under the Scarlet Witch’s control.
She can also turn invisible and pass through objects, giving her a constant advantage. While Zombie Ghost doesn’t appear much in the series, many fans believe the character has a lot of untapped potential and is one of the most interesting zombies featured.
Morbius Is A Vambie
When the Zombie Galacti left Earth to devour the universe, some evil zombies stayed behind, searching for new sources of food. Michael Morbius believed spreading the zombie plague to the main Marvel universe (Earth-616) was the answer. He traveled there and impersonated his Earth-616 counterpart for weeks. Using technology from A.R.M.O.R., he pretended to develop a vaccine, but it was actually the virus itself.
In the end, this version of Morbius was killed by his counterpart from Earth-616, who stabbed him with a tree. He was a unique being, and his intelligence made him particularly dangerous. Driven by his constant hunger, need for blood, and exceptional mind, Vambie Morbius possessed everything needed to potentially wipe out humankind.
Luke Cage Realized He Was In The Wrong
Luke Cage was once a member of the Zombie Galacti, a group that traveled the universe consuming all lifeforms. After devouring everything available, the team returned to Earth seeking technology to conquer other universes. They were surprised to find Earth thriving again, thanks to the efforts of Black Panther and his Acolytes.
Luke Cage discovered he’d lost his appetite while trying to eat people, and decided to help them fight the relentless zombies instead. Surprisingly, he was known for his humor even as a zombie, and his fame increased when he became a hero to the surviving humans.
Zombie Thanos Is The Only Way Thanos Can Be Scarier
Thanos is known as one of Marvel’s most dangerous villains, famously wiping out half of all life in the universe. Now, in *Marvel Zombies*, a zombified version of Thanos appears, and he’s just as menacing. Surprisingly, even as a zombie, he remains fixated on the Infinity Stones and repeating his devastating ‘Snap’.
Zombie Thanos struggles with concentration more than the original Thanos, but he’s still determined to wipe out half of all life. However, he’s become much more impulsive, making him even more unpredictable and dangerous. It’s unclear what he might do with the Infinity Stones. Many viewers were disappointed that his appearance in the *Marvel Zombies* series was so brief.
Mister Fantastic Is A Key Villain In The Series
Seeing heroes turn evil is unusual, so when it does happen, it’s memorable. The Maker, a version of Reed Richards from Earth-2149, fully became a villain even before becoming a zombie. This Reed saw the zombie virus as a natural step in evolution and approached it scientifically. He even secretly infected his own family – Sue, Johnny, and Ben – to turn them into zombies as well.
This zombie version of Reed Richards is one of the most frightening in the series. He’s not only intelligent and clever, but also sees the world in very simple terms – things are either right or wrong. Like the original Reed, this zombie doesn’t hesitate to use extreme methods to get what he wants. Combine that with a complete lack of concern for human life, and you have a truly dangerous enemy.
Deadpool Is As Hilarious As Ever
Okay, so I’m totally hooked on *Marvel Zombies 3*! It’s crazy because the zombie virus actually comes to our main Marvel universe – Earth-616 – and it’s all Deadpool’s fault! This isn’t just *any* Deadpool, though, it’s the one from Earth-2149. He gets into a fight with this A.R.M.O.R. team – including Jennifer Kale and Wundarr the Aquarian – and things go *bad*. Like, he loses his whole body bad! Now he’s just a head, and everyone calls him Headpool. He manages to escape with this zombie named Simon Garth, who basically carries him around everywhere. The whole comic is hilarious and disturbing because Headpool just won’t *stop* talking to Simon, who just grunts back. It’s basically a one-man show from the most annoying, yet somehow endearing, zombie head ever!
Deadpool is known for being funny, but Headpool – a talking, decaying head who tells jokes – is especially strange. He’s become so popular that he even showed up in the *Deadpool & Wolverine* movie, and continued to exist on the main Earth (Earth-616) after the *Marvel Zombies* storyline. What makes Headpool unique is that he was the only zombie to break free from the time loop created by the Watcher.
Wasp Has Quite The Redemption Arc
Okay, so as a huge Marvel Zombies fan, it’s seriously disturbing to see Wasp, Janet van Dyne, become one of the most brutal zombies right away. She’s *so* consumed by her hunger that she won’t even share with her husband, Hank Pym, aka Giant-Man! It’s awful, but it gets worse. When she finds out Hank’s been secretly hiding someone alive – the Black Panther, no less – she completely loses it and he’s forced to… well, he decapitates her. It’s a really shocking moment, even knowing the whole series is about zombies!
Despite everything, her story continues. She assists T’Challa in escaping, and he later returns the favor by restoring her body. Wasp then joins the new human society, learning to control her hunger and even falling in love with Reynolds, a scientist among the Acolytes. She also bravely battles the returning Zombi Galacti. Importantly, she’s the first zombie to discover they can overcome their hunger, a major breakthrough in the effort to rebuild humanity.
Scarlet Witch Has A Whole Army
Wanda Maximoff, also known as the Red Queen or the Queen of the Dead, is widely considered the most powerful zombie in the Marvel Universe. This undead version of the Scarlet Witch retains all of Wanda’s incredible abilities, like altering reality and granting powers, but is fueled by a constant hunger. What’s more, she can’t be healed, as she’s unaffected by the Soul Stone’s power.
It’s easy to see why Zombie Wanda is the most powerful zombie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She possesses amazing abilities and can even share some of that power with other zombies, helping them survive. Because she’s one of the strongest characters in the MCU, fans often discuss where she ranks in terms of power.
Spider-Man Always Fought His Worst Instincts
When the comic series *Marvel Zombies* was first released, fans were shocked to see Spider-Man, one of the most popular superheroes, transformed into a zombie who craved human flesh. Spider-Man was horrified by his own actions and deeply regretted consuming people, particularly his Aunt May and wife, Mary Jane. He vowed never to take off his mask, unable to bear looking at his own face after everything he’d done while under the zombie’s influence.
Once Peter’s hunger was finally gone, he was the first to notice and accept the change. When some zombies resisted this new, peaceful way of life, he immediately joined forces with the humans, hoping to restore normalcy. Even while scavenging for food, he maintained his cheerful and playful personality, often cracking jokes that bothered his teammates, the Zombi Galacti. It’s remarkable that even as a cannibalistic monster, Spider-Man held onto so many of his original values.
