The Persona series is brimming with unforgettable characters. Each installment introduces a new ensemble of companions who unite to save the world, and subsequent games enrich the cast with non-playable characters who can be just as iconic as the main crew. With a multitude of individuals (and creatures and machinery) to encounter, some will undeniably shine brighter than others. Below, I’ve compiled a list of ten standout Persona characters, aiming for a balanced selection from both primary party members and supporting characters who leave a lasting impression despite their limited screen time. This list is organized alphabetically, so the rankings should not be given undue importance.
1) Aigis – Persona 3
In the story of Persona 3, Aigis, who was initially an android, undergoes a transformation where she develops her own emotions, making her seem incredibly human and relatable among the characters in SEES. She exhibits a strong sense of loyalty towards the main character, and her struggle with self-identity is portrayed exceptionally well in the social links of Persona 3. Due to her captivating presence, Aigis was chosen as the protagonist for the sequel, Persona 3: The Answer.
2) Akinari Kamiki – Persona 3
As a dedicated fan, I’ve consistently admired Akinari’s social links in this series. Despite his knowledge of his impending demise, he manages to discover an inner tranquility as our bond with him evolves. The poignant conclusion, where he ultimately leaves us, is undeniably bittersweet. However, the journey to that point is a rich and rewarding experience that I wouldn’t trade for anything else.
3) Chie Satonaka – Persona 4
Initially, Chie’s passion for kung-fu films captivated me, but what truly won me over was her dynamic contrast with her friend Yukiko. To be honest, this analysis could essentially be a study of their duo, as it’s hard to envision Persona 4 without them both.
4) Funky Student – Persona 4
Some individuals disregard The Funky Student, but for those folks, I simply say, “That’s quite unusual, friend.” Sometimes, it’s not just catchy phrases, a great personality, and an impressive afro that make a character standout in a series, but the unique charm they bring to the table.
5) Junpei Iori – Persona 3
In most of its games, Atlus typically assigns characters into familiar roles, and one such role is the “humorous sidekick.” I find Junpei, from amongst these characters, to be the best. Initially appearing as a bumbling fool who believes he’s irresistible to women, he may seem foolish, but he’s my foolish character. As you progress in the game, you notice that he uses his comedic persona to hide his vulnerabilities. It’s an intelligent narrative that’s skillfully executed, adding depth to Junpei’s personality.
6) Kanji Tatsumi- Persona 4
Kanji appears to be an older troublemaker in high school, yet he unexpectedly reveals himself as a loyal ally for the Investigation Team, even going to great lengths to safeguard them. His social link delves into his intricate sexuality. Atlus may not fully satisfy all players with this aspect, but witnessing him unravel his complex personal life contributes positively to the series’ ongoing discussions about sensitive topics.
7) Koromaru – Persona 3
Koromaru is a lovable dog who dons a knife and an angel-wing costume. There’s just something about him that makes you adore him! He’s incredibly loyal and quite intelligent too. Admittedly, he communicates through Aigis, but among the series’ animal characters, Koromaru truly shines – even amidst a tricky fox, a pesky teddy bear, and a cat determined to put you to sleep.
8) Makoto Niijima – Persona 5
Greetings! It seems you’re interested in Makoto’s unique character traits. Not only is it known that her Persona symbolizes a motorcycle, but what truly sets her apart is her dedication and firmness in her beliefs, which have earned her much admiration among fans. On one side, she excels as the student council president, always striving for justice. On the opposite end, she’s a thrilling motorcycle rider with a passion for wrestling, adding an edgy charm to her persona.
9) Ryuji Sakamoto – Persona 5
I’ve stated before that Junpei is my beloved comical companion, and I stand by that statement. Yet, Ryuji offers an intriguing twist on the typical sidekick role. He certainly retains his impulsive and juvenile nature, which is undeniable. However, as we delve into his past, his protective instincts take on a new dimension. He’s suffered more than any child should, and this hardship drives him to ensure no one else experiences the same pain. In many ways, Ryuji mirrors Kanji, with Atlus occasionally falling short in its portrayal. Nevertheless, as we get to know him better, he gradually becomes a friend you can’t help but grow fond of.
10) Yusuke Kitagawa – Persona 5
Without a doubt, Yusuke exhibited certain shortcomings before his Awakening. He was socially awkward and failed to perceive Madarame’s wickedness, which added immense depth to his transformation in the game. Interestingly, Matt Mercer lends his voice to the character in the English version of Persona 5, making Yusuke seem rather endearing despite his quirks.
