10 Best Sci-Fi Shows To Binge On Netflix In December

As a total TV addict, I’m always on the lookout for a good binge-watch, and Netflix really delivers, especially if you’re into sci-fi. They’ve got a bunch of cool options dropping this December, a lot of which are Netflix originals. We’re talking everything from shows based on comics to really intense sci-fi dramas and some seriously twisted international series. Honestly, the stories are fascinating – some are light and fun sci-fi, while others are complex and will really make you think. The best part? Many of these shows are short enough to devour in a weekend, though there are a few longer series that could easily fill up your whole December!

Here is a look at some of the best sci-fi shows on Netflix to stream this December.

10) I Am Not Okay with This

Inspired by the graphic novel by Charles Forsman, I Am Not Okay with This was a Netflix series starring Sophia Lillis as Sydney Novak, a teen who unexpectedly develops telekinetic abilities. Her powers surface when she feels intense emotions, and the show follows her journey to manage both her feelings and her newfound powers. Critics generally liked the series, appreciating how it used her abilities as a metaphor for the challenges of growing up. Though Netflix initially ordered a second season after the seven-episode first season, the show was ultimately canceled.

9) Sense8

Created by the minds behind The Matrix, Sense8 is a fantastic, but often overlooked, Netflix series. Despite facing challenges, the Wachowskis managed to produce two seasons and 24 episodes before Netflix ultimately canceled the show. Fortunately, they were also given the opportunity to create a satisfying finale, which debuted in 2018. Sense8 centers around eight strangers who are mentally and emotionally linked, sharing each other’s abilities and memories. The show is notable for its diverse cast and strong LGBTQ+ representation. Though it ended prematurely, Sense8 at least received a proper conclusion, making it a great choice for a December binge-watch.

8) Sweet Tooth

Sweet Tooth is a sci-fi series available on Netflix that lasted three seasons. It’s based on the comic books by Jeff Lemire and takes place in a world after a devastating event, where children are born as part-human, part-animal hybrids. This leads to fear and violence, as humans begin to see the hybrids as a threat and form groups to hunt them. The show centers on a boy named Gus and his quest to find family and survive in a hostile world. With 24 episodes, Sweet Tooth offers a complete story – a rare treat for sci-fi fans on Netflix.

7) Orphan Black

If you’re looking for a captivating series to binge-watch this December, Orphan Black on Netflix is a great choice, despite its length of five seasons and 50 episodes. The Canadian sci-fi show features Tatiana Maslany in an award-winning performance playing multiple distinct clones. And now, you can also enjoy the new spinoff series, Orphan Black: Echoes, starring Krysten Ritter, which has just been added to Netflix.

6) The Umbrella Academy

Inspired by the comic books created by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy was a television series that lasted four seasons, with a total of 36 episodes. The story is set in a world where, mysteriously, 43 women who weren’t pregnant all gave birth on the same day – and each baby was born with superpowers. A wealthy man then adopts seven of these children and trains them to be a superhero team called The Umbrella Academy. The show begins in modern times, after one of the siblings has died and the others have grown apart. Their father’s death reunites them, and they soon discover it may signal the beginning of the end of the world. The series was recognized with six Emmy nominations.

5) Alice in Borderland

If you’re a sci-fi fan, December is a great time to check out all three seasons of the Netflix series Alice in Borderland. The show, which has 22 episodes, is set in a ruined Tokyo where people compete in dangerous games to stay alive. It’s inspired by Alice in Wonderland and shares some similarities with Squid Game, featuring intense, high-stakes challenges. With plenty of unexpected plot twists and a mind-bending question about whether the world is even real, Alice in Borderland is sure to keep you hooked.

4) Black Mirror

If you’re looking for a sci-fi series to watch on Netflix this December, check out Black Mirror. It’s an anthology series—like The Twilight Zone, but with a focus on the darker side of technology. While there are seven seasons, it’s a relatively quick watch with only 33 episodes, plus an interactive film called Bandersnatch (though Bandersnatch is no longer available on Netflix). Some of the best episodes include “San Junipero,” “USS Callister,” and the seasonally appropriate “White Christmas.”

3) Dark

Dark is a challenging but rewarding sci-fi series on Netflix. It’s a complex time travel mystery that jumps between multiple timelines – starting in 1986 and 2019, and eventually spanning to 1921, 1888, 1953, and 2052. The story is full of twists and turns, and actors often play different versions of the same character across these eras, all converging into one overarching narrative. If you enjoy thought-provoking and intelligent science fiction, Dark is arguably one of the best shows Netflix has to offer.

2) The Witcher

Netflix’s The Witcher is a sci-fi series that’s still running, and with season four recently released in October, December is a great time to start watching. The show follows Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter, and his efforts to protect a princess named Ciri. While many fans miss Henry Cavill in the role, they can re-watch the first three seasons he starred in. Season four features Liam Hemsworth as Geralt, and a fifth and final season is planned.

1) Stranger Things

Everyone’s been glued to Netflix’s Stranger Things this December, as the show is finally wrapping up its story. It first debuted in 2016, following a group of young friends facing terrifying monsters and learning to fight back. Now, nine years later, the characters are all grown up and battle-worn, but they’re uniting for one last showdown. The first four seasons have 34 episodes, and the final season consists of eight. The first four episodes are already available, with three more coming on Christmas, and the series finale airing on New Year’s Eve.
