10 Best Spells in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, Ranked

In Frieren‘s extraordinary lifespan spanning over a millennium, ten years seems insignificant. Having reunited with her old comrades after their decade-long battle against the Demon King, she embarks on another journey not merely for adventure, but to deepen friendships and cherish connections made.

Originating from the manga series penned by Kanehito Yamada and brought to life by Tsukasa Abe’s illustrations, the anime adaptation titled “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End,” produced by Madhouse, has ascended the ranks on MyAnimeList as one of the most cherished anime productions ever.

In a deceptively charming guise of an elf girl, Frieren proves to be a legendary mage with unparalleled might, having slain more demons than anyone else, earning her the prestigious title “Frieren the Slayer.” The magical world unfolds through the lens of this laid-back yet adventurous elf mage’s life, as she amasses an array of spells as diverse and intricate as herself – from playful enchantments like turning sweet grapes sour or speaking complex tongue twisters without stumbling, to practical ones such as easing itchy spots on the back or keeping eggshells intact while cracking eggs, and even formidable battle spells. However, the question remains: which spells have stolen the show in the series (thus far)?

10) A Spell for Survival

The story features various spells, such as one for locating misplaced items, another for maintaining body warmth, yet another for cleaning clothes, and one for navigating through dungeons. There’s even a spell that helps determine the true contents of treasure chests, which would be particularly helpful for Frieren to avoid falling victim to mimics’ tricks. Additionally, there’s a spell designed to find a quick route back to a main road. Throughout the anime and manga, many useful spells are showcased, making them valuable assets for daily survival and standard dungeon exploration.

In my adventure-seeking perspective, I’d say nothing beats the underestimated charm of the spell subtly hinted by Heiter when our Hero Party found themselves cornered in Chapter 97. This enchantment enables survival without the necessities like food, water, and air for as long as two months! Now, imagine pairing this with Ansehelschella (a spell that casts a blissful slumber and creates an endless illusion of a joyous dream). With such a combo, you might even find yourself enjoying a cozy hibernation during the chilly winter seasons. Quite a unique travel companion for a long, arduous journey filled with uncertainties, wouldn’t you agree?

9) Reelseiden

Übel’s Reelseiden spell is stealthily deadly within Frieren, capable of slicing through nearly anything while leaving opponents blind to its path. In Episode 26, Wirbel managed to deflect Übel’s brutal strike as trees collapsed around them; however, the top-tier mage from Episode 20, well-versed in defensive magic and donning a unique cloak, was unable to dodge being cleaved in two.

Within a five-meter radius, there exists an area where a subject might unwittingly encounter their destiny. If they don’t have a moment to perceive their impending doom before getting instantly divided, that is. To illustrate a less gruesome and practical application, consider the speed and efficiency of chopping, dicing, and overall food preparation in a kitchen setting with such a magical tool at hand.

8) Unnamed Black Hole Spell

In the 26th episode, Frieren’s mirror clone was seen generating a “black hole.” This implies that Frieren possesses a mystical ability to summon a black hole, which quickly absorbs everything around it before vaporizing them. It’s surprising how the gravity of this powerful spell is casually handled and not given more attention in the series!

The idea of conjuring a black hole is astoundingly amazing in itself, and what’s more, since even a black hole as small as a ping-pong ball has enough mass and gravitational force to potentially annihilate the planet, it suggests an immense amount of magical control or containment effort would be required to prevent such a destructive spell from going out of hand.

7) Spatial Transference

In many scenarios, flying magic is a versatile and commonly utilized spell by most mages, whether for reaching high places, navigating difficult terrain, or getting around obstacles. However, teleportation magic could potentially exceed or greatly enhance such abilities. This was evident when Zart teleported Frieren to the sky in Chapter 108. Although teleportation might appear to be overly common or powerful, its possibilities are too promising to exclude it from consideration.

This enchantment offers a multitude of potential applications, ranging from combat situations to daily convenience. Facing a formidable adversary? You can either transport them or yourself out of the way. Journeying to a distant location that would be perilous, prolonged, and costly? Simply transport there instantly. Despite being commonly associated with overused tropes, teleportation’s extensive, versatile applications are undeniable.

6) Zoltraak

In the thrilling third episode, Frieren shared the tale of Qual, an ancient adversary known for crafting a legendary spell – “Zoltraak,” a devastating burst of pure mana. This was no ordinary magic; it was said to be the first piercing spell ever cast, capable of breaching defensive enchantments and armor imbued with magical resistance. The consequences were catastrophic, as four out of ten adventurers and seven out of ten mages in the region perished at its hands. Known initially as “Human Obliteration Magic” in the anime, this destructive power was depicted as ominous black energy. As an ardent magic enthusiast, the tale of Zoltraak leaves me awestruck!

Over time, once Qual was locked away, the spell was thoroughly examined and stronger defensive spells were invented. As people adapted Zoltraak to fight against demons, it became a fundamental part of human’s contemporary offensive magic system, often called “Demon-slaying Magic” due to its contrasting white appearance. However, despite being considered an average offensive spell nowadays, Frieren acknowledges that Fern’s version of Zoltraak might be potent enough to kill her.

5) Defensive Magic

Defensive magic, initially designed as a response to Zoltraak, evolved into a key component of mages’ magical abilities. This skill, mastered by all non-demon mages who rely heavily on mana and require precision, is essential. As demonstrated in Episode 23, it can be powerful enough to become reflective, enabling the user to deflect an opponent’s offensive magic that strikes their barrier and send it back.

Through the example of Qual’s fight against Fern and Frieren, it’s clear that the ongoing evolution of magic and research has added layers of complexity to the enchanting world-building. In fact, before Flamme urged more investigation into magic, many humans considered it a creation of demons. This shows us how a powerful spell like Zoltraak, once thought unbeatable, was eventually analyzed and incorporated into everyday offensive spells. Similarly, defensive spells have evolved over time and have become both more common and increasingly potent, with their strength growing as they developed further – quite the opposite of the subtle offense spells.

4) Dispelling Magic

Besides defensive spells being helpful for fending off attacks, it’s often suggested that prevention is the most effective strategy. While disabling a mage’s access to their mana can prove crucial, the spell Sorganeil might offer assistance in limiting an opponent’s mana supply at its source. However, the drawbacks such as needing constant vigilance to maintain focus on a single target and its ineffectiveness during ambushes make it too risky to rely on.

At times, the most effective charm might be to counter or negate the opponent’s spell. By employing dispelling magic, if the caster is skilled at identifying an adversary’s incantation, they can nullify its effects, effectively halting an attack mid-flight before it materializes, a skill showcased by Frieren in Episode 9 when she countered Aura’s spell.

3) Spell of Obedience: Auserlese

In Episode 10, I witnessed the magical prowess of Aura, or more precisely, Frieren, unleashing the spell known as Auserlese. This spell employs the Scales of Obedience to compare the mana of the caster and their target’s souls. The one with the greater mana tips the scale in their favor, exerting control over the other without lifting a finger. However, if the “lesser” possesses a strong will, they can defy subjugation or even reverse the situation.

This enchantment appears to possess significant strength, given its depiction of weighing a mage’s soul. Yet, it seems like a delicate balance (two-sided scale), as potent as it may be for controlling an adversary, the need for additional equipment could prove inconvenient in real-world application. Furthermore, the reciprocal nature of its operation would pose a risk to someone like Aura if she were to underestimate her opponent.

2) Fürwehrer

Frieren has the ability to learn complex spells over a long period of time, but this is not common among most mages, especially humans. For instance, as shown in Chapter 96 of the manga, and hinted at in episode 21 when Frieren declines Serie’s offer to receive any spell she wanted, Fürwehrer is a powerful spell that allows a caster to transfer their mastery of a spell to a grimoire, effectively giving the spell to someone else.

Embracing this enchantment, I can swiftly grasp complex spells that traditionally require endless hours of labor, struggle, and personal sacrifice. Instead, it transforms the grueling task into an enjoyable and speedy learning experience!

1) The Height of Magic

In my observations, I’ve noticed that Frieren seldom employs “The Height of Magic” spell, usually resorting to it in critical situations such as when her Spiegel clone casts it against Fern in Episode 26 or during the Hero Party’s confrontation with the Demon King, which occurred 80 years ago. This swift spell is designed to instantaneously repel its target using telekinesis, making it appear seamless and undetectable by mana sensing, leaving the target bewildered as they cannot recognize it as a magical attack. However, this potent spell has its drawbacks, as it momentarily leaves the caster defenseless.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End can be streamed on Netflix and Hulu, and Crunchyroll.
