Dan Slott is one of the most prolific Spider-Man writers, second only to Stan Lee, who holds the record for the longest run on the character. Slott began his work with the Brand New Day storyline in 2010 and continued writing Spider-Man comics – including The Amazing Spider-Man and Superior Spider-Man – for eight years. He was responsible for several significant storylines that dramatically changed Spider-Man and continue to shape the character within Marvel Comics today.
Dan Slott’s time writing Spider-Man included many fantastic stories, from large-scale events like Spider-Island and Spider-Verse to smaller, well-crafted arcs. Here’s a look at the best of them.
10) “Learning to Crawl”

The story arc ‘Learning to Crawl’ focused on Spider-Man’s early adventures. It featured a young fan who built a Spider-Man costume and weapons, unintentionally endangering others. The inexperienced Spider-Man had to intervene. This boy later became the villain Clash, who eventually aimed to become a crime boss after being released from juvenile detention. Though brief, the story was well-received, and Aunt May played a key role in helping Peter Parker refocus on the values Uncle Ben taught him.
9) Spider-Verse

The Spider-Verse first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #9 in 2014. Writer Dan Slott brought together nearly every version of Spider-Man and Spider-Woman from across the multiverse to celebrate the character’s 50-year history. This happened because of an attack by Morlun and the Inheritors. While there have been other Spider-Verse stories since then, the original remains the most popular, showcasing the fun and camaraderie of the entire Spider-Family.
8) “Go Down Swinging”

Dan Slott’s final Spider-Man story arc, “Go Down Swinging,” centered around Norman Osborn’s attempt to regain his powers and finally defeat Spider-Man. He did this by stealing the Carnage symbiote, which created the dangerous Red Goblin. The story also revealed Norman’s knowledge of Peter Parker’s secret identity, leading to a determined effort to destroy his enemy. While the plot was fairly straightforward, it delivered exciting action sequences, particularly a memorable fight between Spider-Man and Norman Osborn. Overall, it was a strong conclusion to Slott’s run on the Spider-Man comic book.
7) “Fall of Parker”

Following the ‘Superior Spider-Man’ storyline, Peter Parker regained control of his life and experienced real success, running his own company, Parker Industries. Unfortunately, the comics decided to challenge his happiness, leading to the ‘Fall of Parker’ arc. Despite saving the city, Peter lost his company, forcing him to start over and refocus on his role as Spider-Man.
6) “New Ways to Die”

“New Ways to Die” was an early, major storyline for Spider-Man following the Brand New Day reboot. It marked Spider-Man’s first significant challenge after everyone forgot he was Peter Parker and his history with Mary Jane Watson was wiped clean. The story pitted Spider-Man against Norman Osborn and Venom, with a plot that involved him being falsely accused of murder and then hunted by Osborn’s Thunderbolts team. It’s a memorable story with thrilling action and the debut of Eddie Brock as Anti-Venom.
5) “Last Legs”

The 600th issue of The Amazing Spider-Man, titled “Last Legs,” featured a showdown with Doctor Octopus, one of Spider-Man’s biggest enemies. This occurred after Doc Ock discovered he was terminally ill and wanted one final, major conflict. While this wasn’t the story where Doc Ock switched minds with Peter Parker, it set the stage for that future event. Featuring the New Avengers and Fantastic Four, the issue felt like a true anniversary celebration and worked well as a complete story on its own, thanks to writer Dan Slott.
4) Brand New Day

The Spider-Man storyline One More Day is famously disliked by fans because it essentially erased Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson’s marriage to save Aunt May. Surprisingly, what followed, Brand New Day, was actually a strong story. This marked Dan Slott’s beginning as writer on The Amazing Spider-Man, and he used it to bring Harry Osborn back to life, reshape Peter and MJ’s lives, and add a fresh element to Spider-Man’s history. While One More Day was widely criticized, Brand New Day deserves to be recognized as a separate and enjoyable story.
3) “No One Dies”

Dan Slott’s ‘No One Dies’ is a two-part Spider-Man story widely considered to be one of his best. Following the death of J. Jonah Jameson’s wife, Marla, Peter Parker is deeply saddened and blames himself for not being able to prevent it. He reflects on all the lives he couldn’t save and makes an impossible vow: to ensure no one ever dies while he’s around. Though smaller in scope than his larger crossover events, ‘No One Dies’ is a touching and well-crafted story that showcases Slott’s skill as a writer.
2) Spider-Island

It’s amazing that the Spider-Island storyline worked as well as it did, which really highlights Dan Slott’s skill as a writer. The story revolves around almost everyone in Manhattan gaining Spider-Man-like powers. While having so many people with powers could diminish what makes a hero special, it certainly created a lot of chaos. The whole concept is over-the-top, but that’s part of what makes comic books fun! Slott really let loose with this story, demonstrating how enjoyable comics can be when they don’t take themselves too seriously.
1) Superior Spider-Man

Dan Slott’s run on Spider-Man is best known for ‘Superior Spider-Man,’ a story where Doctor Octopus swaps minds with Peter Parker and becomes the new Spider-Man. Surprisingly, Doc Ock decides to actually be a hero, though he’s much more aggressive than Peter ever was. With fragments of Peter’s personality still present, Otto is subtly guided to improve as a hero, eventually becoming one of Marvel’s best. By the end, Doc Ock had not only bettered Peter’s life but arguably became a more effective Spider-Man, even if he wasn’t always as concerned with doing what was strictly ‘right’.
