Storm is a truly iconic character, not just within the X-Men, but across the entire Marvel Universe. For years, Marvel has searched for a female hero who could rival Wonder Woman in terms of both power and popularity, trying out characters like Captain Marvel and Scarlet Witch (despite Scarlet Witch’s problematic history with mutants). But Storm has consistently stood out as a strong, dignified, and genuinely powerful figure, fully deserving of her reputation as a goddess. She’s also known for her incredible costumes – some of the most visually stunning designs in all of comics, consistently created by top artists who have worked on the X-Men.
The X-Men are known for their memorable outfits, and Storm’s are particularly impressive. She consistently looks fantastic, and some of her costumes are truly spectacular. Here are ten of Storm’s best looks, showcasing her status as both a powerful hero and a fashion icon.
10) Early 2010s Costume

Storm and Black Panther were married in the mid-2000s, and she briefly joined the Fantastic Four with him. Later, in the early 2010s, she returned to the X-Men and even became an Avenger, sporting a fantastic updated costume. It’s a modern take on her original look, offering more coverage while remaining striking. Her signature headpiece and the cape-like wristbands are consistent elements of her outfits, giving them a familiar feel. The sleek, black, one-piece swimsuit design is both flattering and a nod to her classic style – a perfect blend of nostalgia and contemporary design.
9) Current Costume

Storm is a legendary figure in the X-Men, and she’s recently headlined her own comic series. While Marvel often restarts these series, this one has continued with new iterations, a pattern common for their books featuring female leads. She’s also sporting a fantastic new costume! It features her signature black and gold colors, a bold midriff design, and a powerful look. The lightning bolt-shaped hairpieces are a fresh take on her classic headpiece, feeling both new and true to her style. It’s a truly iconic look, and fans hope it sticks around for a long time.
8) Extraordinary X-Men Costume

Let’s be honest, Extraordinary X-Men isn’t a title most fans rave about. It launched right when Marvel was heavily promoting the Inhumans, and it really felt like the book was set up to fail. That said, there was one bright spot: the costumes. And Storm’s? Absolutely stunning. Usually, her outfits pull from classic designs, but this one was a total refresh, keeping only her signature mohawk. White is such a good look for her, and it showcased a physique rarely seen in comics – seriously, best abs ever! Plus, those layered belts were just a fantastic design choice. It’s a real shame the series didn’t take off, because that costume alone was worth the price of admission.
7) X-Men Red (Vol. 2) Costume

The second volume of X-Men Red was a highlight of the Krakoa era, and the first issue ended with a stunning new costume reveal. The final page showcased the full design, which ditched the cape and incorporated details from her previous outfits. The result was a striking look, reminiscent of Michael Jackson, and paired with her voluminous hair, creating a truly powerful image. It felt fit for a warrior queen and solidified her status as one of the most visually impressive characters on Krakoa.
6) The Second Claremont Run Costume

While Chris Claremont’s 2000 return to the X-Men wasn’t a fan favorite, it did result in some fantastic new costumes for the team, including a particularly striking one for Ororo (Storm). The costume cleverly updated classic design ideas with a bold purple and black color scheme, and it always looked amazing when depicted in action, especially in the artwork of Adam Kubert in Uncanny X-Men. A stunning two-page spread in Uncanny X-Men #384 perfectly showcases the costume, and it remains one of Storm’s best, though often overlooked, looks.
5) The Purple ’90s Costume

Storm started the 1990s with a memorable costume that she wore for six years. In 1997, a new artist, the late Carlos Pacheco, joined the X-Men (Vol. 2) series and gave Storm a completely fresh look. This costume was unlike anything she’d worn before or since—a simple outfit featuring a midriff-top and leggings with a thigh-high cut. She kept her wristband cape but ditched the headpiece. Storm also got a new haircut, trading her long hair for a shorter style with very long bangs. Notably, this was the first time she wore a purple costume, creating a look that many fans still appreciate.
4) The Late ’80s Costume

Reading Uncanny X-Men in the late 1980s was a fantastic experience. The book featured some of the best artists working in comics, and the character designs were incredible. Fans will recognize Storm’s costume from that era – it was the original design for her most iconic look and still looks great. The lightning bolt design with its yellow highlights really stood out against the black fabric. Although it was a standout design, it’s often forgotten now because of even more impressive costumes that came later.
3) The ’90s Jim Lee Costume

In 1991, after 17 years writing the X-Men, Chris Claremont moved on, and the series was relaunched with new character designs by Jim Lee. Storm received one of her most famous outfits during this reboot—a look many fans recognize from the X-Men: The Animated Series. It was an updated version of her late 1980s costume, switching the color to silver and removing the lightning bolt on her chest. While the large shoulder pads are a bit dated, the costume still looks great after 35 years. It’s a classic look, though not necessarily her very best.
2) Original Costume

Storm made her debut in Giant-Size X-Men #1 with a striking costume, designed by Dave Cockrum. Originally intended for a character in the Legion of Superheroes, Cockrum adapted the design when he began working on the X-Men, creating a truly iconic look. The costume – a black, swimsuit-like design with gold accents, a wristband cape, and headpiece – was instantly memorable and exuded confidence. Its timeless quality is evident in the fact that many artists have revisited and drawn inspiration from it over the years.
1) Punk Rock Storm

As a longtime X-Men fan, I always loved Storm’s costume change after she met Yukio in Uncanny X-Men #172-173. Before that, her look was classic, but a bit…safe. Yukio’s whole punk vibe clearly rubbed off on her! She ended up ditching her original outfit for something way edgier – a mohawk, a killer leather vest, a black tank, and leather pants finished off with studded armbands. It was a total transformation, making her look incredibly powerful and dangerous. Honestly, it’s become the Storm look for so many fans – and considering all her amazing outfits over the years, that’s really saying something!
