Adaptations based on comic books are growing in popularity, largely due to the success of Marvel and DC Comics’ series. However, these two giants aren’t the only significant players; Image Comics has produced some unforgettable television shows that have left a lasting impression on fans. Chances are, two of these shows are already popping up in your mind as you read this introduction. While Image Comics is one of the bigger comic book publishers, they approach their work differently from others, which has led to some extraordinary narratives and series that fans can’t wait to explore.
Without a doubt, Image Comics distinguishes itself from others in the industry. They specialize in creator-driven works, aren’t afraid to push boundaries, and boast an impressive collection of series spanning numerous topics and genres. It’s no surprise they have such devoted followers. Their titles include crowd favorites like “Saga”, which fans are still clamoring for an adaptation of, as well as “Monstress”, “Radiant Black”, and “Stray Dogs”. As for the adapted content? Fans adore them all, but some stand out more than others.
10) Jupiter’s Legacy
To start with, the first item is “Jupiter’s Legacy,” a Netflix-produced adaptation based on a comic book series. The narrative centers around Sheldon Sampson, formerly a businessman, who transitions into a superhero. His tale incorporates familiar elements that fans will identify with, such as a heartrending past and an enigmatic transformation, which add to the enjoyment of a well-told story. Upon acquiring powers, Sheldon, along with four others, establishes the Union of Justice. Notably, this marks the beginning of the plot, as the emerging generation of heroes must live up to the legacy and bear the burdens left by their predecessors – a challenge more easily discussed than achieved.
The show titled “Jupiter’s Legacy” was developed by Mark Millar, Frank Quitely, and Peter Doherty as part of the Millarworld collection. In its live-action form, it features Josh Duhamel, Ben Daniels, Leslie Bibb, Andrew Horton, Elena Kampouris, Mike Wade, and Matt Lanter. Unfortunately, it was terminated after just one season by Netflix; however, an upcoming animated series named “Supercrooks” is planned within the same universe.
Jupiter’s Legacy is available to stream on Netflix.
9) The Savage Dragon
Are you up for a blast from the past? “The Savage Dragon” is an animated series that aired from 1995 to 1996, derived from a comic book series of the same title. This show revolves around superheroes, with a special focus on the main character, “The Savage Dragon”. He’s a police officer who sports green skin and scales, embodying the classic dragon figure. The series also introduced several familiar faces such as She-Dragon, Barbaric, Mako, Overlord, and Horde.
In this comic book series titled “The Savage Dragon,” crafted by Erik Larsen, the narrative eventually passes down to the hero’s son, ensuring the story continues. The animated adaptation spanned two seasons before wrapping up, featuring the talents of Jim Cummings, Danny Mann, Jennifer Hale, Dorian Harewood, and numerous other voice actors.
The Savage Dragon is available to stream on Plex, and some episodes are on YouTube.
8) Deadly Class
If you’re in search of an unusual spin on action-packed comic book tales, be sure to check out “Deadly Class.” This series cleverly combines elements of action and thriller to produce something fresh. It takes place in the tumultuous ’80s, focusing on a band of students attending a secret academy, groomed to become top-tier assassins. Needless to say, there’s no shortage of drama accompanying this wild ride. The main character is Marcus Lopez Arguello, who finds himself competing against more privileged peers at the school, leading to tension and forcing him to walk a tightrope between morality and survival.
The television series titled “Deadly Class” was brought to life by the creative team consisting of Rick Remender, Wes Craig, Jason Wordie, and Rus Wooton. With a total of 56 comic issues at their disposal, unfortunately, only 10 episodes have been aired for viewers so far. Due to a mixed response from fans, the series could not proceed for further seasons, whether it was a positive or negative outcome. The cast members of “Deadly Class” include Benedict Wong, Benjamin Wadsworth, Lana Condor, María Gabriela de Faría, Luke Tennie, Liam James, and Michel Duval.
Deadly Class is available to stream on The Roku Channel.
7) Paper Girls
Many viewers are well-versed with Amazon Prime Video’s efforts to hold its ground in the adaptation arena, one of which is the series titled Paper Girls. Released in 2022, this show received mixed feedback. The story (and comic) presents a thrilling sci-fi journey that combines elements of time travel and horror. It focuses on four girls, known as the Paper Girls, who find themselves embroiled in a conflict they barely understand, all starting in 1988.
The comic book series titled “Paper Girls” was devised by Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang. The series has run its course with a total of 30 issues released. This critically acclaimed series had fans eagerly anticipating each new installment, so the lukewarm reception to the live-action adaptation came as something of a shock. Unfortunately, Amazon Prime Video decided to discontinue the show after just one season. The main cast included Camryn Jones, Riley Lai Nelet, Sofia Rosinsky, Fina Strazza, and Adina Porter.
Paper Girls is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
6) The Maxx
The Maxx, initially aired back in 1995, serves as another nod to the past. This animated series revolves around its title character, The Maxx, who juggles everyday life and superhero duties amidst various complexities. While The Maxx is primarily concerned with dealing with serial killers like the notorious Mr. Gone, he also works tirelessly to protect civilians, particularly his social worker friend. The struggles are genuine and relatable, which perhaps contributed significantly to the show’s (and comic’s) captivating allure.
Originally conceived by Sam Keith, the comic book series known as The Maxx was published over 35 issues under the banner of Image Comics. Subsequently, it switched to different publishing companies. The television adaptation, consisting of a single season, comprised a total of 13 episodes, featuring Michael Haley, Amy Danles, and Glynnis Talken in leading roles.
The Maxx is available to stream on Apple TV+.
5) Witchblade
There have been several efforts to bring the tale of “Witchblade” to reality, such as an animated series, a movie, and a live-action television show. Today, we’re discussing the latter option. Interestingly, the show serves as a continuation from the pilot film, which is quite neat. The narrative revolves around Sara Pezzini, a NYPD homicide detective who finds herself in deep waters when she acquires the notorious “Witchblade”. This artifact bestows her with extraordinary abilities and opens the door to an array of supernatural issues. Consequently, Sara embarks on a journey to combat supernatural entities.
For two seasons, spanning 24 episodes including the pilot, Witchblade aired on TV before coming to an end. Since then, efforts have been made to continue the narrative in various forms such as anime, manga, and novels. The original series featured Yancy Butler, David Chokachi, Anthony Cistaro, among others.
Witchblade is available to stream on The Roku Channel.
4) Wild C.A.T.S.: Covert Action Teams
The animated series titled “Wild C.A.T.S: Covert Action Teams” showcases another group of superheroes, active from 1994 to 1995. This team, known as the Wild C.A.T.S., fought against the Daemonites. Their operations were backed by billionaire Jacob Marlowe, a recurring trope in action shows of that era. Interestingly, “Wild C.A.T.S: Covert Action Teams” was broadcast alongside popular series such as “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
The comic book series “Wild C.A.T.S.” was developed by Jim Lee and Brandon Choi, with their initial release (Wild C.A.T.S.: Covert Action Teams) being published under Image Comics. Later on, the series changed publishers, a practice that wasn’t unusual during that period. The show featured Rod Wilson, Roscoe Handford, Colin O’Meara, Ruth Marshall, Dean McDermott, and other voice actors.
Wild C.A.T.S.: Covert Action Teams is available to stream on Tubi and Amazon Prime Video.
3) Spawn
The animated series titled “Spawn,” which includes Todd McFarlane’s Spawn and Spawn: The Animated Series, was a superhero show created for HBO. It aired from 1997 to 1999 and is centered around Lieutenant Colonel Al Simmons, who was deceitfully murdered at the start of the series. Although his death occurs early on, it sets the stage for the story as his soul is sent to Hell and later released, enabling him to fulfill his vow for revenge, albeit not necessarily in that sequence.
Spawn was originally developed by Todd McFarlane for Image Comics, where it has since become well-known as an anti-hero. The animated adaptation ran over three seasons and featured the vocal talents of Keith David, Richard Dysart, Dominique Jennings, among others.
Spawn is available to stream on HBO Max.
2) The Walking Dead
The Walking Dead, undeniably one of the most recognized adaptations from Image Comics, has earned its popularity for a reason. People are drawn to thrilling zombie sagas, which is evident in the multiple spin-offs that have emerged from this live-action series, such as Fear the Walking Dead, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. This show (and comic) presents a post-apocalyptic horror scenario where zombies, or “the walking dead,” have essentially conquered the world. Those who survive are not only fighting against these undead creatures but also battling their fellow humans.
Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore originally developed “The Walking Dead” comic, which became a massive success with more than 190 issues in total. On the television front, the show itself spanned 11 seasons (not including spin-offs), boasting an impressive roster of stars such as Andrew Lincoln, Jon Bernthal, Sarah Wayne Callies, Norman Reedus, and many other talented actors.
The Walking Dead is available to stream on Pluto TV, Amazon Prime Video, and Netflix.
