10 Best Vampires In Comics, Ranked

Vampires have been a consistent presence in comics for decades, appearing in titles from major publishers like Marvel and DC, as well as smaller companies like Vertigo and even in Japanese manga. Both Marvel (with their Blood Hunt storyline) and DC (through an alternate reality event called DC vs. Vampires) have featured large-scale vampire crossovers, but regardless of the publisher, vampires consistently rank among the most formidable monsters in the medium.

Vampires, popularized by Bram Stoker’s Dracula and rooted in ancient myths, are a natural fit for comic books. Dracula himself has appeared across all major publishers. But which comic book version of the Count is the best? This list ranks the greatest vampires in comics, from Dracula himself to other memorable bloodsuckers from Marvel, DC, and independent publishers.

10) Bloodline

Brielle Brooks, also known as Bloodline, is the daughter of Blade and a relatively new vampire in the Marvel universe, first appearing in 2022. She became a member of Avengers Academy and played a key role in the Blood Hunt storyline, even helping to rescue her father from Varae. Unlike some vampires, Brielle wasn’t born with vampire traits. Doctor Strange shielded her from magic, but as a teenager, she discovered she was different. She shares her father’s ability to walk in daylight and has a unique ability: she can’t be detected by magic, and sometimes magical creatures can’t even see her.

9) Morbius

Morbius is a unique vampire in the Marvel universe. He’s more akin to a classic Marvel monster, like The Lizard, than to traditional vampires like Dracula or Blade. Michael Morbius suffered from a life-threatening illness and attempted a cure using vampire blood. Just as Curt Connors used lizard DNA hoping to restore his hand but transformed into a monstrous lizard, Morbius’s experiment turned him into a living vampire. In fact, Morbius first appeared in a Spider-Man comic alongside The Lizard, highlighting their similar origins. He constantly battles an overwhelming thirst for blood and works to maintain a supply to avoid losing control. Morbius also possesses enhanced healing, hypnotic abilities, and is resistant to many weaknesses typically affecting vampires.

8) King of Vampires (Hellblazer)

The King of Vampires is a villain who first appeared in the Vertigo comic book series Hellblazer, where John Constantine originally lived before moving to the broader DC Universe. He debuted in issue #50 in 1992 and was killed off just over a year later in issue #69. Despite his short run in the comics, he remains a significant character. He claimed to have lived on other planets before Earth, though this was never confirmed. His creators based his appearance on actor James Dean. This ancient vampire fed on humans for tens of thousands of years before encountering John Constantine. As the First of the Fallen, he was the most powerful vampire of them all, but his reign ended in a final confrontation with Constantine, where he discovered – too late – that Constantine wasn’t an easy victim.

7) Vampirella

Vampirella first appeared in comics back in 1969, and surprisingly, she wasn’t created by Marvel or DC. Forrest J. Ackerman and Trina Robbins introduced the character, and later, Dynamite Entertainment acquired the rights to her stories. Unlike traditional vampires, Vampirella is actually an alien from the planet Drakulon, where everyone needs blood to live. When her people come to Earth seeking human blood, she rebels and dedicates herself to protecting humanity. Being an alien also means she doesn’t share the typical weaknesses of vampires.

6) Dracula (Marvel)

The Dracula featured in Marvel Comics is the original character from Bram Stoker’s famous novel. Because the character is now in the public domain, many different versions of Dracula appear in various comic books. However, the Marvel version remains the most well-known and significant. He starred in his own comic series, Tomb of Dracula, in the 1970s, serving as the main villain. More recently, he’s played a role in storylines like King in Black, where he gained power over all vampires, and Blood Hunt, where he surprisingly teamed up with the heroes to fight a dangerous version of Blade.

5) Batman (Elseworlds)

As a huge cinema fan, I always find these alternate universe takes on characters fascinating! This version of Batman is unique because he’s the only vampire Batman in these stories, though I could easily imagine a ‘What If…?’ scenario with Wolverine going down that path. This Batman comes from Earth-43, and his story, ‘Batman and Dracula: Red Rain,’ is pretty intense. Basically, he fights Dracula, wins, but gets infected and becomes a vampire himself. It doesn’t stop there, though. The story continues in ‘Batman: Bloodstorm,’ where he struggles with losing his humanity while trying to protect Gotham. It all culminates in ‘Batman: Crimson Mist,’ where he fully succumbs to the darkness, starts taking out all his enemies, and ultimately sacrifices himself by walking into the sunlight. It’s a really tragic, compelling arc.

4) Cassidy

Cassidy is a vampire character from the comic book and TV series Preacher, created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. He’s become a fan favorite thanks to the popularity of the original comics and the television adaptation. An Irish vampire, Cassidy was turned during the Easter Rising in 1916 and wanders through life until he meets Jesse Custer in Dallas, becoming a close friend. Despite being a vampire, he’s a fundamentally good person who genuinely tries to do what’s right, even when it’s difficult. He even gets a satisfying conclusion when he bargains with God to protect his friends, and surprisingly reappears later on in the series The Boys.

3) D (Vampire Hunter D)

Originally a series of novels by Hideyuki Kikuchi, Vampire Hunter D expanded into anime, manga, and comics. The manga version, released in 2007, was uniquely adapted by the original author alongside Media Factory. Set in a future where vampires have replaced humanity, the story follows D, a dhampir – a half-vampire, half-human. Born to a vampire father and human mother, D was created to overcome vampire weaknesses. He possesses vampire powers without any of their vulnerabilities, making him a legendary and feared vampire hunter.

2) Skinner Sweet

Skinner Sweet is widely considered one of the most compelling vampires ever created, in any medium. The comic series American Vampire shows how he first became a vampire in the Old West and then witnessed vampires gaining influence in American politics and business. While Pearl Jones also became an American Vampire, Skinner Sweet is still the most popular character and the central focus of the story. The series follows Sweet and Pearl as they try to get revenge on vampires who are simply driven to cause harm.

1) Blade

Blade is arguably the most well-known vampire and vampire hunter in comic books, appearing in both Marvel and DC universes. Like the character D from Vampire Hunter D, he’s a dhampir – born from a vampire bite during pregnancy. His mother didn’t survive his birth, and he dedicated his life to seeking revenge on vampires. Blade has battled iconic villains like Dracula and countless other monsters, and he’s even teamed up with the Avengers on several occasions, solidifying his place as a truly exceptional figure in the world of comics.
