The X-Men’s fate is heavily influenced by the composition of their team, and this is particularly true for them compared to other superhero teams. A weak or inexperienced group is more likely to face defeat. But what makes the X-Men unique is the intricate relationships between its characters. The strength and appeal of the X-Men grew as the characters developed, with the team reaching unprecedented popularity. Throughout their history, they have assembled some exceptional rosters, gathering together the most potent, capable, and captivating mutants in the Marvel universe.
As a devoted film enthusiast who’s always had a soft spot for the X-Men, I can’t help but marvel at their enduring presence in the comic world, which has now surpassed the 60-year mark. Over this impressive timespan, they’ve assembled some of the most outstanding teams in comic book history.
From vanquishing divine adversaries to outsmarting sophisticated adaptive weapons crafted by foes who have meticulously studied mutants in general and the X-Men specifically, their triumphs never cease to amaze me. But what truly sets them apart is their commercial success – they’ve consistently outsold nearly every other team in the industry.
To celebrate this rich legacy, I’ve curated a list of ten exceptional X-Men rosters that have left an indelible mark on readers everywhere, offering us a veritable cornucopia of heroic tales.
10) Warren Ellis’s Astonishing Team
In my opinion, while many people adore the Whedon/Cassaday collaboration, I’ve always found them to be excessively praised. They remind me of a typical Claremont team with Emma Frost and the Beast, but I’m growing tired of it. However, things improved significantly in Astonishing X-Men when Warren Ellis took charge of the series. Colossus was swapped out for Armor, and Storm stepped in to fill Kitty Pryde’s role. This team is almost flawless – it boasts two of the X-Men’s strongest leaders, their best fighter, the smartest member who can function as agile muscle, an almost indestructible member, the third-best telepath (who can also become nearly invincible when necessary), and a powerhouse. It’s a strategic team composed of members who will get the job done. For instance, their mission against bio-Sentinels at the start of “Exogenetic” demonstrated their effectiveness as both a fighting force and a rescue squad. Furthermore, the blend of personalities made for an extremely enjoyable read. This X-Men team is one of the coolest ever, yet it doesn’t receive the recognition it deserves.
9) Wolverine and the X-Men Team
Initially, Wolverine led X-Force before establishing his own mutant academy where he gathered a group of potent mutants to educate future generations. This band of mutants included Kitty Pryde, Iceman, Beast, Rachel Grey (formerly Marvel Girl), Husk, Doop, Lockheed, as well as students Quentin Quire, Oya, Warbird, Broo, Kid Gladiator. Additionally, members from the beloved New X-Men team (the training squad during the House of M period) were part of the group. The combination of distinct personalities made Wolverine and the X-Men one of the most enjoyable reads during the Schism era. Despite not being the strongest team, they were capable enough to triumph over formidable adversaries.
8) Rogue’s Rapid Response Team
Among the X-Men, Rogue stands out as an underestimated leader; her tenure as a leader began in the year 2000 during Chris Claremont’s return, which some may find disappointing yet I found captivating (his Uncanny team of that time period — Gambit, Phoenix, Storm, Beast, and Cable — was almost included due to its intriguing composition). Post the events of House of M, Cyclops entrusted Rogue with assembling a compact team capable of swiftly neutralizing any danger to the mutant species. The team she assembled consisted of Mystique, Sabretooth, Iceman, Cannonball, Cable, Lady Mastermind, and Omega Sentinel. It was undeniably potent and proficient, but it also harbored several volatile factors. Rogue’s team selections were questionable at times — having both Mystique and Sabretooth (both notorious for betraying the X-Men) on the same team was one such instance — yet that’s what made this team so thrilling to read about. You never knew when they would self-destruct, and when they eventually did, it was quite exhilarating. While this team might have been more entertaining than powerful, that’s just how the X-Men can sometimes be.
7) Giant-Size Team
As a devoted cinephile of comic book lore, I can’t help but reminisce about the electrifying impact that “Giant-Size X-Men” #1 had on me and countless others in the Marvel Universe. The reason for its enduring popularity was undeniably the outstanding ensemble it introduced us to – Cyclops, Storm, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Banshee, Sunfire, and Thunderbird. This team was a perfect blend of seasoned veterans and raw power, promising endless entertainment for us fans.
The tragic demise of Thunderbird left an indelible mark on the team, but it also paved the way for the remaining members to captivate us even further. Regrettably, Banshee and Sunfire eventually parted ways, yet they were more than compensated by the stellar performances of the rest of the cast.
The chemistry between Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm, Colossus, and Nightcrawler was gold, as their constant squabbles added a layer of realism to an otherwise extraordinary team. Despite their brief tenure together – spanning only seven issues (from “Giant-Size X-Men” #1 to “X-Men” #94-100 before Jean Grey joined and altered the group dynamic as the Phoenix) – the impact they made on us fans was immeasurable.
6) Extinction Team
Following Wolverine’s return to Westchester with a significant portion of the mutant race, Cyclops became determined to safeguard Utopia and what remained of his kind. He assembled an extraordinarily potent group of X-Men, which came to be known as the Extinction Team. This team consisted of Cyclops, Magneto, Emma Frost, Storm, Magik, Hope Summers, Danger, Namor, and a Colossus who had been empowered by the Juggernaut. This team was nothing short of formidable; they were capable of tackling almost any challenge thrown their way, and they could easily overpower most adversaries. The team possessed a diverse array of abilities — Magneto and Storm offered world-altering power, Magik handled transportation and magic, Namor and Juggerlossus provided immense strength, Danger took care of the technical aspects, Emma used her telepathy, Hope Summers served as a backup for their powers, and Cyclops led the group. In essence, they were comparable to the Avengers in terms of power and efficiency, and they functioned seamlessly together. Truly a remarkable lineup.
5) Outback Era Team
During Chris Claremont’s initial tenure, the Outback Era brought a fresh vigor to the X-Men. Headed by Storm and seconded by Wolverine, this stellar team included Colossus, Rogue, Psylocke, Dazzler, Longshot, Havok, Polaris, Gateway, Madelyne Pryor for a while, and later Jubilee joined them. This well-balanced group was both powerful yet not overly so, and incredibly skilled. They were an entertaining bunch, offering readers captivating stories and an impressive team dynamic. The Outback Era offered some of the best tales during this period, and they tackled formidable threats with a blend of power and skill. Despite what newer fans might believe, the Outback Era stands out as superior in general, providing the final truly remarkable phase of Claremont’s work on Uncanny X-Men.
4) Storm’s First Team
Following “The Dark Phoenix Saga,” the X-Men endured a tough period after losing a key member. In this time, Storm, who had lost her powers, stepped up to challenge Cyclops for leadership. Remarkably, she emerged victorious and took charge of the team. Her squad, composed of Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Rogue, Phoenix II, Kitty Pryde, and occasionally Magneto (when he wasn’t busy training the New Mutants), demonstrated an impressive blend of strength and camaraderie. This group consistently performed far beyond expectations, further highlighting Storm’s exceptional leadership abilities and the evolution of the X-Men throughout the ’80s. This team is both a formidable force in combat and a delight to read about.
3) X-Men Blue Team
For countless X-Men enthusiasts, the Blue Team of X-Men was the one that sparked their interest in the X-Men (myself included). The ’90s were a turbulent era for comic books, but 1991 marked the introduction of an exhilarating new lineup for the X-Men. As Chris Claremont’s tenure drew to a close after 17 years, the X-Mansion was bustling with X-Men, following the return of X-Factor and the Outback Team. The X-Men were divided into two teams: Blue and Gold. Although the Gold Team had its appeal, it couldn’t compare to the Blue Team – Cyclops, Wolverine, Beast, Rogue, Psylocke, Gambit, and Jubilee. While this team may not have boasted the world-altering power of the Gold Team (which included Storm, Jean Grey, Iceman, Colossus, Archangel, Forge, and Bishop), they more than made up for it with their skill and camaraderie. This longstanding group worked together seamlessly despite frequent banter among themselves. To top it off, Jim Lee illustrated this team, offering fans the most attractive team with the finest artwork.
2) Morrison’s New X-Men
In Grant Morrison’s “New X-Men” series, the team stands out as a remarkable aspect, making it an exceptional X-Men run. The reason behind this is the extraordinary team itself. “New X-Men” serves as an exemplary portrayal of a team that boasts immense power and skill, yet remains captivating due to its comradery and fun dynamic. The lineup consisted of characters such as Cyclops, Professor X, Jean Grey, Wolverine, Beast, Emma Frost, Xorn, Beak, Angel Salvadore, Fantomex (and if you wish, the Stepford Cuckoos too). This team embodied the ideal vision of an X-Men group. They possessed power, drama, intrigue, and were home to a clandestine adversary poised to wreak havoc on them all. Morrison skillfully utilized Claremont-esque soap opera elements to make this team sparkle in every story they graced. In my opinion, this is the finest X-Men roster of the 21st century, though it falls slightly short when compared to another legendary X-Men team that also featured a Phoenix Force member.
1) The Phoenix Era Team
In issue #101 of X-Men, Jean Grey (Phoenix) became a member, forming what many consider to be the greatest X-Men team ever assembled. This powerhouse squad, consisting of Cyclops, Wolverine, Colossus, Storm, Nightcrawler, Professor X, and later Kitty Pryde, along with some other well-known X-Men, made the X-Men the standout superhero team of the 1980s. Their epic tale reached its climax in the acclaimed storyline “The Dark Phoenix Saga.” It’s difficult to challenge this team as the best X-Men team, given their exceptional camaraderie and acquisition of one of the most formidable forces in X-Men history. The fact that legendary creators Chris Claremont, Dave Cockrum, and John Byrne were behind the scenes only adds to the team’s iconic status in comic book history.
