10 Best Yakuza/Like a Dragon Characters, Ranked

The Yakuza/Like a Dragon series, which spans over two decades, is teeming with memorable characters – a testament to Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios’ proficiency in extended storytelling and character development. Characters like Kazama Kiryu, Goro Majima, and even the unique Susumu Gondawara leave lasting impressions, showcasing RGG Studio’s talent for creating impactful personalities.

Instead, let’s focus on a select group of characters who truly shine among their peers. Keeping that in perspective, here are the top ten characters spanning the Yakuza universe, including those from Judgment and any related titles. To maintain clarity, I’ve arranged them based on their initial appearance in the series chronologically. Here’s a rundown of the list.

10) The Junk Boy – Like a Dragon: Ishin

In the game “Like a Dragon: Ishin“, The Junk Boy is somewhat secondary, yet he steals the limelight. This tiny character will gladly accept any item you offer him and shows unbridled joy. Moreover, he educates us on the principle of equivalent exchange – how can you not adore him?

9) Daigo Dojima – Yakuza 0

In Yakuza 0, I come across Daigo as a young, somewhat pampered son of Sohei Dojima, the chairman of the Tojo Clan, who’s 12 years old. As the story unfolds, he transforms into a formidable fighter and a respected, albeit green, leader of the Tojo Clan. Beyond his fighting skills, he’s one of Kazama Kiryu’s dearest friends and proves to be a valuable ally for Ichiban Kasuga in our shared journey.

8) Rikiya – Yakuza 3

In contrast to some opinions held by Yakuza enthusiasts, I am not among them. The protagonist, Kiryu, embarks on an unusual path as he strives to abandon his criminal past and care for an orphanage in Okinawa. Regrettably, he is compelled to re-enter the world of conflict when the Ryudo Family seeks to exploit the land where the orphanage stands, intending to construct a resort.

In a nutshell, Rikiya Shimabukuro initially appears as an opponent that Kiryu needs to vanquish before having a conversation with the Ryudo patriarch. However, their relationship swiftly evolves, and Rikiya ends up being more of an ally or sidekick to Kiryu. Regrettably, he meets his end in one of the most heart-wrenching scenes ever depicted in Yakuza lore, while heroically shielding Kiryu.

7) Ryuji Goda – Yakuza 0

Just like Daigo, you initially encounter Goda when he’s a massive 12-year-old bully in Yakuza 0. At this stage, he’s just snatching trousers, but it foreshadows his future role as the antagonist.

In Yakuza 2, Goda steps into the spotlight as one of the most formidable opponents Kiryu has ever encountered. Standing tall as the Dragon of Kansai, he outmatches Kiryu in size and strength. However, in a climactic showdown on the Kamurocho Hills construction site, Kiryu, known as the Dragon of Dojima, emerges victorious, sealing his triumph in an epic battle that will be long remembered.

6) Masaharu Kaito – Judgment

In both the Judgment games and his short stint in Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, Kaito exudes charm. From his vibrant attire to his laid-back demeanor, he’s the character I’d most want to grab a drink with in the series.

Moreover, should we find ourselves in a tough situation, Kaito is undoubtedly skilled in combat. He’s the strong enforcer at the Yagami Detective Agency, although he’s occasionally demonstrated his detective abilities as well, honed over many years.

5) Ichiban Kasaga – Yakuza: Like a Dragon

In the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series, the latest character, Ichiban Kasuga, faced the challenge of stepping into some big footsteps. For over a decade, fans have been following Kazama Kiryu’s journey as the main character.

It’s great that Ichiban has lived up to Kiryu’s legacy. He’s a goofy guy with a pure heart, showing just enough individuality to stand out from the Dragon of Dojima. Although he had to appear alongside Kiryu in “Infinite Wealth”, I’m eager to see what new adventures Ichiban will embark on next. In fact, it wouldn’t surprise me if he climbs higher in this list after more games showcase his abilities.

4) Taiga Saejima – Yakuza 4

As a dedicated fan, I must clarify that while Saejima’s story is intertwined with Majima’s in Yakuza 0 through a series of flashbacks, his true and interactive debut occurs in Yakuza 4, where I had the privilege of controlling him as a playable character.

In that game, he dramatically breaks out of prison and clears his name of the accusations against him. Later on, he develops a deep friendship with Kiryu and appears frequently in subsequent games, consistently displaying his signature toughness. It’s also worth mentioning that he might be the most formidable fighter in the series; few other characters could hold their own against a bear and emerge victorious.

3) Goro Majima – Yakuza 0

Many players might rank Majima as their number one character. To be honest, I wouldn’t mind if they did. However, for me, he’s slightly lower – within my top three, but not quite at the very top. So, it’s clear that I’m a fan of Majima, but not to an extreme degree.

In a simpler, more conversational way: He’s like Kiryu’s opposite but not an enemy. They often clash and fight, yet they are deep friends beneath it all. Majima’s unpredictable nature sets him apart from Kiryu, contributing to the popularity of the Wild Dingo of Shimano within the series.

2) Shun Akiyama – Yakuza 4

Akiyama’s tale of overcoming poverty and achieving success resonates with everyone. Moreover, he retains the memory of his street life, making him one of the kindest characters in the series. Without a doubt, when it comes to who is a “stand-up guy,” Akiyama takes the lead.

He’s essentially a loan shark, but he’s more of a kind-hearted lender most of the time. Akiyama doesn’t shy away from getting physical in a brawl, though. Fingers crossed that our previous lead character earns a bigger role in future Yakuza games.

1) Kazama Kiryu – Yakuza 0

There isn’t anyone else who could take the leading spot on this list. If you’re a fan of the series, you’ve been on quite a journey alongside Kiryu in nine main games and numerous spin-offs. Fans have become intimately familiar with Kiryu’s story, knowing more about his journey than most video game characters. By now, he feels like an old friend.

This character’s journey has been quite diverse and eventful. From a humble street thug, he climbed the ranks to lead the Tojo clan, experienced his ‘Uncle Kaz’ phase at the orphanage, became a grandparent who playfully tossed his grandson around like a ball, faced battles with cancer, and yet managed to persevere through it all. His life story is filled with highs and lows, but he’s always found strength in the companionship of those he cares about – not to mention his formidable punching skills!
