The long-awaited live-action adaptation of Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda has officially announced its cast for both Link and Zelda. This is a significant development given the film’s recent silence. We now have insight into the actors portraying the main characters, as well as some of the crew, with director Wes Ball being one of them. Regrettably, information about the movie remains scarce. Apart from Link and Zelda, no other characters have been confirmed. The plot and additional characters remain a mystery, leaving fans to speculate based on the princess and the hero alone.
As a dedicated gamer, I find myself spoiled for choice when it comes to Zelda games – there’s no less than 29 titles to delve into! Each one boasts a rich cast of unique characters, expanding the pool of potential additions to an impressive hundreds. But when it comes to deciding which ones should grace our screens, there are a few undeniably iconic faces that simply must make the cut, whether Nintendo or Sony is in charge.
10. Ganondorf
It’s hard to imagine any scenario where the Evil King isn’t involved, except perhaps if the story closely follows either Skyward Sword or The Minish Cap. However, even in those cases, Demise would be part of it, as Demise is the initial form of Ganondorf.
Independent of any approach, crafting a Legend of Zelda film without featuring one of the Tri-Force’s essential pieces is practically impossible. Link and Zelda are two integral components, so neglecting the third – typically their primary adversary – would be unwise and add an extra layer of challenge to creating this movie, as well as potentially making it less appealing to fans.
9. Midna
In a Zelda film, it wouldn’t feel authentic if Link were to embark on his journey without any companions. Throughout the series, he rarely ventures out alone; instead, he often relies on others for guidance or assistance due to powers he lacks. While games like Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom have given him four helpers in each game, having that many might be excessive.
Out of the two options, Midna seems to be the most suitable for various reasons. She has gained more popularity compared to Fi, who may have come across as somewhat harsh in “Skyward Sword”. Moreover, translating Midna into live-action might be less challenging because she is essentially a spirit residing within the Master Sword, making it easier to represent her in real life scenarios compared to Fi. Therefore, choosing Midna would likely yield a more effective and engaging character.
It’s uncertain whether the upcoming movie will be based on a single game or develop its own narrative within that game’s universe, like the Fallout TV series or The Super Mario Bros. Movie. If they decide to include Midna, it could limit their creative freedom since her story is tightly connected to Twilight from Twilight Princess, making it challenging to create a plot involving her without resorting to a direct adaptation.
It’s possible that Wolf Link could show up in live-action format, but this might not be ideal for the initial movie of what’s expected to turn into a series. Despite this, she is an exceptional character and plays a crucial role in Link’s story. The writers may need to think outside the box to find the best way to integrate her effectively.
8. Sidon
In the Zelda series, Sidon plays a significant role in both “Breath of the Wild” and “Tears of the Kingdom”. However, he is not featured prominently in other games within the franchise. This could be one reason why adapting him might be relatively straightforward. While he does have a distinct storyline, he can also function as a secondary character within the Zora tribe without needing a unique, self-contained narrative arc.
– He shares an incredibly close bond with Link, which is essentially the key aspect to highlight about his character. This ease in incorporation comes from this fact. An attempt to animate him for live-action would undeniably pose a significant challenge, as genuine Zoras do not exist in reality.
Regardless of how the portrayal of the people and tribes in Hyrule unfolds, it’s highly recommended that Sidon represents the Zoras. In some adaptations, he might be accompanied by Mipha or Ruto, contingent upon the direction the story takes.
7. Sheik
Without specific plot details to guide us, it’s challenging to predict what might be possible for the Zelda movie. It’s speculated that at some point they could create a film centered around Zelda, and if they do, a story based on “Ocarina of Time” would be captivating since during those seven years, she essentially lived as Sheik alone.
If they decide against featuring Sheik in the initial movie, or if they’re considering a backdoor pilot for that character, having Sheik appear in the first film is essential. This is because Sheik plays a significant role in Princess Zelda’s character development, and it’s crucial not to overlook this aspect. The extent to which Sheik appears in the storyline will depend on the creative team’s specific adaptation choices, but even a small cameo could help set up potential future projects.
6. Beedle
Beedle is a less common character from the time period of Breath of the Wild who appears in games beyond just that series. You can find him in The Minish Cap, Skyward Sword, and The Wind Waker as well. Given his recurring roles, it seems fitting for him to make an appearance in the live-action franchise too.
From a character that closely resembles a human, I could easily transition into live-action storytelling. In fact, incorporating me into your game wouldn’t be a challenge at all; you can simply bring me on board as I am in the games – a merchant.
It’s unlikely that Link will always be able to obtain necessary items during his travels by visiting shops and merchants. Instead, having him encounter Beedle occasionally to acquire essential items wouldn’t strain credibility too much.
5. Malon and Epona
Malon and Epona are closely connected, primarily because they’re intertwined in the games, but also due to the logical flow when both characters are involved. It’s crucial for Link to ride Epona at some stage, but where will he get a horse? Why not Lon Lon Ranch, a place where he can encounter Malon as well?
In the game “Ocarina of Time”, Malon plays a significant part, but she’s not made an appearance since then. Despite her absence, she remains a beloved character who warrants inclusion, even in minor roles like this one might seem to be.
4. Dark Link
In many fans’ opinions, Dark Link is one of the most engaging and intriguing adversaries that the character Link has encountered in the Zelda series. Players had a tough time dealing with his mirror powers in Ocarina of Time, and since then, he has become an iconic figure within the game’s lore. No matter how the story unfolds, Dark Link is a crucial element that should always be considered.
He’s ideally suited to contrast with Link, and he presents a significant hurdle. In the hypothetical movie adaptation of Link’s story, following the usual hero’s journey, there might come a point where it seems Link is cornered with no escape or chance of survival. A struggle within himself, but more ominous in nature, would be ideal and somewhat unexpected for viewers unfamiliar with the game series.
3. Great Deku Tree
It’s quite debatable whether a talking, ancient, wise tree like the Great Deku Tree would fit well in a live-action film. However, given his significant role in the storyline, it seems almost indispensable to feature him. With appearances in five mainline Zelda games and even an official LEGO set, the Great Deku Tree certainly holds enough importance to warrant inclusion in the movie.
Simplifying his function in the game could be achieved by making him either remove the mission or the threat from Link. This is essentially what he does in the games, and it might not always require Link to heal the tree, like in Ocarina of Time. Instead, let the Great Deku Tree explain the situation to the viewers, and that’s all there is to it. It’s as straightforward as can be.
2. King of Hyrule
In the upcoming movie, since Zelda is portrayed as a child and the princess, it’s essential to have an adult character taking on the role of Hyrule’s current ruler. Given that the King has been a recurring figure in various games and often played diverse roles, his presence seems crucial for a live-action adaptation of Hyrule, as he symbolizes its leadership.
While the King may not have a significant on-screen presence, he is still an important figure due to his high rank. He might not make frequent appearances, as he’s often underrepresented in video games. However, when crisis strikes, it’s crucial that the king be informed about the situation, even if it only involves alerting him.
1. Darunia
Similar to Sidon, the Gorons could benefit from having a representative, and that role should ideally be filled by Darunia. In Ocarina of Time, he serves as the elder chief of the tribe, making him a highly respected and suitable choice for many fans who consider this game the best in the series. As the eldest member, his inclusion in the game would further enhance its quality.
They might include characters like Darmani, Yunobo, or Daruk, who could simply be tribe members serving as hidden references for long-time fans of the series. With various tribes expected to appear in the movie, it’s likely we’ll encounter some Gorons. Among them, none is more fitting and instantly recognizable than Darunia.
