The glowing lightsabers – red, green, and blue – are one of the most recognizable symbols of Star Wars, embodying the ongoing battle between good and evil. But beyond the familiar blades seen in the films, the Star Wars universe – explored in novels, comics, animated shows, and the Disney+ series – features a huge variety of lightsabers with unique designs. These weapons aren’t just about looks; they blend useful features with the history and traditions of the Jedi and Sith.
Lightsabers come in many forms, from practical, multi-tool blades to historic relics dating back centuries before the Republic. These weapons showcase the lightsaber’s incredible versatility and power, reflecting both its function as a weapon and its significance to those who wield it.
10) Cal Kestis’ Double-Bladed Saber

In the popular Star Wars Jedi games – Survivor and Fallen Order – the main character, Cal Kestis, carries a lightsaber that represents more than just a weapon. As one of the few who survived Order 66, his lightsaber is a reminder of everything he’s lost and a symbol of his hope for the future. His first lightsaber is unique, built with pieces from his old Master, Jaro Tapal’s, lightsaber, and can even transform into a double-bladed staff.
Cal later upgrades his lightsaber using parts he finds on his journeys, enabling it to separate into two blades. This constant change to the lightsaber reflects Cal’s journey to rediscover his connection to the Force and his development as someone who overcomes challenges.
9) Lightsaber Rifle

Jocasta Nu, the head librarian of the Jedi Archives, had a very unusual lightsaber: it was built like a rifle. This weapon took a normal lightsaber handle and put it inside a rifle frame, allowing her to shoot a focused beam of lightsaber energy over long distances.
As a lifelong movie fan, I always found it fascinating that this weapon was kept so securely in the Jedi Archives – and for good reason! When the Republic fell, this Jedi named Nu went in, risking everything to grab vital information before Palpatine could. Can you imagine facing Darth Vader? That’s exactly what she did, and she actually used this weapon to defend herself! It was a desperate move, her last stand to keep the most important secrets of the Jedi Order safe from the new Empire.
8) Mara Jade’s Saber

Mara Jade is a character from the older, non-official Star Wars stories known as Legends (formerly the Expanded Universe). She began as a secret agent for the Emperor, but later trained to become a powerful Jedi and eventually married Luke Skywalker. Her lightsaber was unique because it had a purple blade, unlike the more common blue or green lightsabers used by Jedi, and even the rarer yellow ones.
The sword’s handle was usually thin and graceful, built for fast, fluid motions that reflected her skills as a spy and killer. The purple color of the blade was a fitting choice for a character who often balanced between good and evil.
7) Qimir’s Sabers

Qimir, a character from Star Wars: The Acolyte and a former Jedi apprentice, uses a special lightsaber. When his opponents think they’ve defeated him, he can split his single blade into two separate lightsabers, giving him a surprising advantage.
Qimir’s two unique weapons have sturdy, deliberately unpolished hilts, a design choice that mirrors his break from the Jedi Order and embrace of the Sith. The weapons’ functional, rather than elegant, appearance reflects his rejection of the Jedi Code and his own, more pragmatic fighting style, showing he has no need for the finesse of his past training.
6) Temple Guards’ Pike Sabers

The Jedi Temple Guards were the most highly skilled protectors within the Jedi Order, tasked with keeping the Jedi Temple on Coruscant safe. They maintained a sense of distance and were unrecognizable to outsiders, wearing the same masks and using standard, uncustomized equipment. Every Guard carried a double-bladed lightsaber pike with a yellow blade.
The Guards used pikes, which allowed them to fight effectively from afar and supported their defensive, crowd-control fighting style – they prioritized teamwork over individual showmanship. The bright yellow color of the pike blades represented their unwavering loyalty to the Order, placing it above any personal goals or outside connections.
5) The Inquisitors’ Spinning Red Blades

The Inquisitors were Force-users of the dark side who hunted down Jedi who had survived the purge, operating under Darth Vader. They were known for their unique lightsabers, which were double-bladed and featured a circular hilt. This design allowed the two blades to spin quickly around the handle, functioning like a fast-spinning fan or providing a defensive shield.
This technique can be used to defend against blaster fire by creating a swirling shield, and to launch surprising attacks from the ground or air. The design isn’t just about combat effectiveness; it’s also meant to intimidate opponents.
4) Kanan Jarrus’ Covert Saber

Kanan Jarrus, once known as Caleb Dume, fought with a lightsaber that looked normal at first glance. But it was specially made to split into two smaller pieces, which he could then attach to his belt for easy and hidden carry when out in public.
This clever design was crucial for Kanan, who had to keep his Jedi identity secret for years after Order 66. Being able to quickly put the weapon together when he needed it, while easily hiding the separate pieces, was a practical requirement for surviving as a fugitive during the Empire’s early years.
3) Ezra Bridger’s First Lightsaber

When Ezra Bridger was first learning the ways of the Force with the Ghost crew, he built a truly unique lightsaber. Instead of looking like a typical lightsaber, its hilt was designed to resemble a blaster. The blue blade emerged directly from the handle. This wasn’t just for appearances, though – the blaster portion of the hilt actually worked, letting Ezra fire stun blasts to protect himself, showcasing his quick thinking and resourcefulness.
I always thought Ezra’s tool was brilliant. Being a Padawan constantly mixed up with smugglers and rebels meant he was always in a bind, and that tool just…fit. It wasn’t just a lightsaber; he could switch to a long-range stunner in a heartbeat. It gave him such a smart edge, even before he fully committed to the Jedi way. It really showed his resourcefulness!
2) Ahsoka’s Iconic White Double Sabers

After leaving the Jedi Order and seeking a new direction, Ahsoka Tano created a new pair of lightsabers, moving away from the green blades she used as a Padawan. One is a regular-sized saber, and the other is a shorter one, called a shoto saber. This pairing supports her advanced skills in Form V (Shien/Djem So), a fighting style that involves holding her primary saber in a reverse grip. The combination of two white sabers has become a defining feature of her dynamic and acrobatic combat style.
Ahsoka Tano’s lightsaber blades are a unique, bright white, setting them apart from other lightsabers seen in Star Wars. This color represents her commitment to doing what’s right, rather than blindly following any organization. The crystals powering her blades were originally red, taken from an Inquisitor she defeated after surviving Order 66. Using the Force, she purified the crystals, restoring them to their original, natural state.
1) The Darksaber

The Darksaber is a famous, ancient weapon and a powerful symbol of leadership for the Mandalorians. Unlike typical lightsabers which project a beam, it has a flat, black blade with a white glow, resembling a classic metal sword. Its unique, katana-style shape sets it apart from all other lightsabers in the galaxy.
The Darksaber was forged over a thousand years ago by Tarre Vizsla, a unique Mandalorian – the only one to ever become a Jedi. It quickly became a symbol of power, and tradition dictates that whoever wins the Darksaber in battle is considered the true ruler of Mandalore.
