Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man, a hugely popular and acclaimed modern manga, recently concluded after eight years. Despite some controversy, this dark fantasy series was consistently excellent. Chainsaw Man is a truly original, insightful, and groundbreaking story with the potential to become a timeless classic.
It’s only been a few days since Chainsaw Man ended, and I’m already seeing how much fans miss the intense feelings the series stirred up in them. Now that it’s finished, a lot of readers are looking for something new to fill that void – maybe a classic dark story, or something fresh and exciting that’s just starting out.
Fire Punch Was Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Masterpiece Before Chainsaw Man
If you’re already feeling the loss of Chainsaw Man, I’d suggest checking out Fire Punch. It’s honestly even more brutal. The story takes place in a frozen wasteland and follows Agni, a guy who can heal from almost anything, but ends up a living flame. It’s a pretty intense revenge story as he tries to find whoever caused his condition.
Fire Punch is a very dark and intense manga, even more so than Chainsaw Man. It often presents bizarre and unsettling situations. While it shares similar themes with Chainsaw Man’s Academy Saga – like the struggle between who we are and who we pretend to be, the way we idolize heroes, and the search for purpose in a bleak world – it’s a truly challenging read.
Ranger Reject Is a Surprisingly Dark Subversion of Super Sentai Superheroes
Negi Haruba, the creator of popular romantic comedies like The Quintessential Quintuplets, has a new manga called Ranger Reject (also known as Go! Go! Loser Ranger!). It’s another story that challenges the idea of what a hero really is, but this time it’s much more direct in its take on superhero tropes. Instead of traditional heroes, the story focuses on the ‘bad guys’ – the monsters usually defeated each week – and reveals that the so-called ‘Divine Dragon Rangers’ are actually the ones behaving badly.
Though the beginning is a bit slow, Ranger Reject quickly becomes much more engaging after the first story arc. It’s a captivating and often dark urban fantasy with a flawed but compelling main character, and it doesn’t take itself too seriously.
Tower Dungeon Is an Excellent Dark Fantasy Manga From an Esteemed Author
Tatsuki Fujimoto, the creator of Chainsaw Man, is a well-known admirer of manga artist Tsutomu Nihei, famous for sci-fi works like Blame! and Knights of Sidonia. Fujimoto has also praised Nihei’s more recent manga, Tower Dungeon, which is Nihei’s first attempt at a dark fantasy story.
The story of Tower Dungeon is easy to follow: a necromancer has murdered the king and locked the princess away in a terrifying tower packed with monsters and deadly traps. A group of soldiers, including a new recruit named Yuuva who used to be a farmer, are sent to rescue her. While the basic idea is simple, what makes Tower Dungeon great – like all of Nihei’s manga – is how it’s presented. The artwork is stunning and incredibly detailed, the world feels fully realized, and there’s a dark, compelling story beneath the surface.
Centuria Is a Modern Fantasy Classic In the Making
The manga Centuria, published on Shonen Jump+, is quickly becoming popular. It tells the tough story of Julian, a slave who gains supernatural powers after a disaster at sea. After the event, he’s responsible for protecting the orphaned child of a fellow slave. This begins a new, challenging adventure filled with hardship and loss for Julian.

Tohru Kuramori, who wrote Centuria, previously worked as an assistant to Fujimoto on Goodbye Eri. Centuria’s story clearly shows Fujimoto’s influence, along with echoes of classic manga like Berserk. However, Centuria also has many original strengths, and it’s quickly becoming a highly recommended series after just two years of publication.
The Bugle Call: Song of War’s Dark World Is One of the Most Unique in Any Fantasy Manga
The Bugle Call: Song of War is a recent manga series gaining popularity, and it’s easy to see why. It’s set in a fascinating and intricately crafted dark fantasy world and features a unique main character named Luca – an orphan who can turn sound into light.
Luca always wanted to be a peaceful musician, but he keeps getting pulled into major wars because of his ability to lead armies. The Bugle Call is brilliantly done in every way – the battles are smart and exciting, the story is full of intriguing mysteries, and the characters grow and change in surprising and moving ways. Plus, the manga just keeps improving with each new release.
Berserk Influenced Countless Dark Manga, Including Chainsaw Man
Now that the popular dark fantasy series Chainsaw Man has finished, it’s a great time to discover what many consider the best work in the genre: Kentaro Miura’s Berserk. Chainsaw Man was heavily inspired by Berserk, and its influence can be seen in many other works, even beyond manga.
Most manga fans are already familiar with the powerful and heartbreaking story of Berserk, but it’s a series worth constantly recommending. Kentaro Miura’s tale of revenge, fighting against fate, and the strength of the human spirit immediately captivates readers. Though often dark and challenging, it’s ultimately praised for its profound themes and lasting impact. Any fan of darker manga should definitely read it.
After God Combines Surreal, Breathtaking Art with an Equally Enchanting Dark Story
The novel After God immediately grabs your attention. It’s set in a dystopian Japan overrun by massive creatures called Gods, which have devastated the landscape and pose a deadly threat to anyone who gets near.
Despite the terrifying new world, not everyone accepts it. That’s where Waka, a girl with strange, god-like powers, and Tokinaga, a researcher from the Anti-God Science Institution, come in – they team up to hunt down the dangerous creatures appearing. After God is a visually stunning and incredibly engaging series that moves quickly and keeps you guessing with its unpredictable story.
Dai Dark Embraces the Chaos in Its Over-the-Top Horror-Comedy Plot
If you enjoy Chainsaw Man, you’ll probably love everything by Q Hayashida. Her most famous work, Dorohedoro, and her latest series, Dai Dark, are both excellent examples of her style. Like Chainsaw Man, her manga combine bizarre, action-packed ideas with dark humor, creating stories that are both unsettling and surprisingly emotional. She doesn’t shy away from the contrast between these tones – in fact, she embraces it.
While many urban fantasy stories like Dorohedoro and Chainsaw Man are set on Earth, Dai Dark ventures into space. It follows Zaha Sanko, a teenage alien whose supposedly magical bones make him the target of dangerous individuals throughout the universe. Dai Dark is a wild, bizarre, and surprisingly touching story – it’s darkly humorous and energetic in a way that feels like what Chainsaw Man strives to be.
Goodnight Punpun Depicts Ordinary Life in the Most Painfully Human Way
Unlike the stories mentioned before, Goodnight Punpun isn’t a fantastical tale. It’s actually a very realistic manga, even though it’s still quite dark. The story follows Punpun, an ordinary boy who is represented as a bird, as he grows up from elementary school into young adulthood.
Throughout the story, Punpun and those around him experience deeply painful challenges. While these struggles are relatable, the series portrays them with such raw honesty that they become even more unsettling. Goodnight Punpun is a surreal and often difficult watch, but its emotional weight is incredibly powerful. If you enjoyed the complex characters and unpredictable storytelling of Chainsaw Man, this series would be a great fit.
Choujin X Might Be Even Better Than Its Author’s Previous Dark Masterpiece
If you’re looking for a truly exceptional manga, especially if you’re a fan of stories like Chainsaw Man, you should definitely check out Choujin X. From Sui Ishida, the creator of the popular dark fantasy Tokyo Ghoul, this new series might be even better. It’s an ongoing story, so you can experience it as it unfolds.
The world of Choujin X features people called Choujins who have incredible, but dangerous, supernatural powers. The series creates a chaotic and often disturbingly dark universe, initially presenting familiar and new ideas in a confusing manner. However, what truly shines in Choujin X is its deeply moving and heartfelt characters, a quality it shares with Chainsaw Man.
