10 DC Characters With the Highest Body Counts

During a period known as the Bronze Age, DC Comics transformed from being perceived as less mature compared to its contemporary counterpart, into the dominant force setting trends. As comics evolved towards maturity, DC took the reins, introducing a sense of seriousness and recruiting writers capable of steering characters down more mature paths. This shift significantly altered the dynamics within the DC Universe. All of a sudden, ruthless villains and morally ambiguous anti-heroes became commonplace, leading to stories that were far more intense than what was typically produced in the past. Notably, heroes and villains both began to take lives, offering readers an unprecedented viewing experience unlike anything they had seen before in DC Comics. Interestingly, death tolls among characters skyrocketed during this time, a stark contrast to previous character mortality rates.

As a devoted comics enthusiast, I’ve been captivated by the DC Multiverse’s dramatic storylines that redefine the boundaries of comic book mayhem. These narratives have seen several characters wreak havoc, claiming the lives of countless beings. The annihilation of planets? Just another day in the life for some of these powerhouses, as they’ve even brought about the destruction of entire universes! When it comes to the top ten DC characters, their body counts are off the charts, with some numbers reaching points that are more theoretical than tangible.

10) Black Adam

In a time span of several millennia, the sorcerer Shazam selected Black Adam to serve as his champion. Known then as Mighty Adam, Black Adam served as the fierce protector of the nation Kahndaq, waging war against any adversary who dared threaten its people. Hailing from a different era, Black Adam’s actions often led to the demise of numerous individuals, with entire armies succumbing to his power. Eventually, he rose to become the ruler of Kahndaq.

Although it is uncertain just how many lives Black Adam took in ancient times (and I must note that his most violent modern act, the destruction of Bialya, may not be considered canon), the number of fatalities certainly runs into the tens or even hundreds of thousands. Unapologetic about causing death, Black Adam has established himself as one of DC Comics’ most prolific killers.

9) The Joker

The Joker, DC Comics’ most notorious antagonist, is renowned for his ruthless acts and brutal methods, making him one of the bloodiest villains in DC’s roster. For years, Gotham City has been plagued by this murderous menace, who uses a wide array of tools to take lives – from guns and knives to explosives, acid, fire, and poison gas.

The Joker’s killing spree is so extensive that he has proven Batman’s belief that eliminating killers doesn’t reduce the number of killings to be flawed. The Joker’s death toll numbers in the thousands worldwide, with no signs of slowing down. If the Joker were to be eliminated, it would undoubtedly save countless lives (though, as a superhero universe, the Joker may find a way to return from the dead). However, it’s important to note that the Joker places little value on human life and thus considers such actions as taking lives as casually as others might breathe. While he might not hold the record for the most lives claimed, the Joker demonstrates an alarming ease in ending lives.

8) Ra’s al Ghul

Ra’s al Ghul is one of DC Comics’ most adaptable antagonists. When you need a cunning power player shrouded in mystery, go for the Demon’s Head. If you’re setting a story in the past and require an ancient threat, introduce Ra’s al Ghul. For a formidable adversary capable of outsmarting anyone, choose Ra’s al Ghul.

Ra’s al Ghul is known for his longevity, which he maintains through the use of the Lazarus Pit’s power. Throughout his long life, he has been a relentless killer responsible for the deaths of millions. Ra’s al Ghul has left devastation in his wake, obliterating entire cities and erasing cultures from existence. For centuries, he has waged war on his enemies, with no signs of stopping as long as he can find another Lazarus Pit.

7) Vandal Savage

The Justice League has faced numerous lethal adversaries, yet few can match the death toll of Vandal Savage. Originally a Neanderthal, Vandal Savage gained superhuman abilities after discovering a meteorite, amplifying his strength, speed, and intelligence, and essentially granting him immortality. For over 100,000 years, Savage has lived up to his menacing title, causing destruction that spans the annals of history. Like Ra’s al Ghul, Vandal Savage has been responsible for the demise of numerous cities and civilizations, but he has been doing so for much longer. Over countless millennia, Vandal Savage has ended the lives of millions without regard for their worth, demonstrating a disregard for the value of any life other than his own.

6) Brainiac

Superman has encountered numerous dangerous adversaries, yet few can compare to the chilling terror of Brainiac. This Coluan cyborg is one of the universe’s smartest beings, having gained his intellect by traversing the cosmos and seizing technology from the civilizations he encounters. Brainiac identifies a habitable planet, steals an entire city, and then launches a missile towards the star at the center of the system, setting off an explosion that obliterates everything but the shrunken city stored on his spaceship. The exact number of cities amassed by Brainiac remains unknown, but most of them serve as the final resting places for entire alien civilizations, their billions of lives extinguished in Brainiac’s relentless pursuit of absolute knowledge.

5) Darkseid

Darkseid, ruler of Apokolips, is often referred to as the Deity of Destruction. He has been engaged in an unyielding conflict against the Divine Beings of New Genesis ever since seizing the throne from his father Yuga Khan. Throughout his reign, Darkseid has been responsible for countless deaths and destruction on Apokolips, with any dissenters meeting their end swiftly. His foot soldiers, the Parademons, serve as expendable troops, often sacrificed in large numbers during Darkseid’s wars. The devastation wrought by his attacks on New Genesis and other worlds is brutal, claiming the lives of every defender. Moreover, the toll taken on Absolute Earth, where he has ruled and allowed evil to prevail, is immeasurable, with billions losing their lives over centuries. This death toll is only expected to rise.

4) Mageddon

Originating from ancient times, Mageddon is a formidable, self-propagating weapon birthed by the Old Gods during their ongoing conflicts. Known as the Primordial Annihilator, Mageddon left no mercy in its wake, obliterating anything in its path each time it was summoned, eventually leading to its imprisonment within the Underverse.

Mageddon exhibits a unique ability to manipulate its targets, instigating fury within their minds. By the time it reaches its intended target, the destruction has already begun, and the world that was marked for destruction is left in ruins. Essentially, Mageddon is an indomitable force of devastation; the only instance where it was halted occurred when supernatural abilities were bestowed upon every human on Earth.

Sadly, Mageddon played a significant role in the demise of the Third World, marking the final chapter for the deities that inhabited it in recent years. Countless worlds have succumbed to its wrath, with billions of lives extinguished almost every time it was unleashed.

3) The Batman Who Laughs

In an alternate reality known as Earth-22 within the Dark Multiverse, a disturbing version of Batman called The Batman Who Laughs emerged. This twisted incarnation came about when the Joker poisoned Batman with a toxin that forced him into a state where he became a deranged Joker-like figure. Unable to reverse the transformation in time, the Dark Knight ended up slaughtering his own Bat-Family and later targeted other superheroes and villains. He eventually annihilated every living being on his Earth, ruling over the ashes.

Later, he was captured by the heroes but managed to escape, aligning with Perpetua in her conquest of the Multiverse. As The Darkest Knight, he joined forces with Perpetua in a violent struggle that involved hurling entire Earths at each other. His death toll already numbered in the billions before this battle against Perpetua, where he added even more to his count.

2) Perpetua

Perpetua is a being responsible for crafting multiple realities. She aimed to rule over all of existence, known as the omniverse, and decided to arm every reality within the DC Multiverse for war. With assistance from entities like the Monitor, Anti-Monitor, and World-Forger – who are her offspring often referred to as the Hands – Perpetua was imprisoned beyond a protective barrier called the Source Wall.

However, when the Source Wall cracked, she returned to the DC Multiverse with ambitions to dominate it again. Conquering the multiverse, she began merging Earths to form a hybrid of both ordinary and dark realities. This led to immense loss of life, although her death toll still pales in comparison to other notable events in DC Comics history.

1) Anti-Monitor

The epic comics event known as “Crisis on Infinite Earths” introduced a formidable character, the Anti-Monitor, who holds the record for the most lives extinguished in the DC Multiverse (and likely in comic books overall). This malevolent being is the offspring of Perpetua and represents the antithesis of matter. Driven by an insatiable desire to augment his power, the Anti-Monitor targeted the multiverse made of positive matter, intending to transform it into anti-matter energy. Over countless universes, he caused devastation on a scale we can scarcely comprehend; by “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” only about four Earths remained intact. The Anti-Monitor’s ruthless conquest led to the annihilation of an infinite number of universes and every living creature within them. Regrettably, there’s no known way to quantify the number of beings that the Anti-Monitor eradicated.
