A central idea in DC Comics is the concept of legacy – passing on the roles of classic heroes to new generations. For over 80 years, DC has introduced new heroes who take up the mantles of those who came before. While some of these successors don’t quite live up to the originals and often feel like supporting characters, others surpass them, becoming even more powerful and popular. In some cases, these new heroes become so well-loved that many fans don’t even realize they’re inheriting a legacy. Through compelling personalities, richer backstories, or unique powers, these DC heroes have taken established identities and truly made them their own.
Even in an industry known for sticking to the old ways, these established leaders demonstrate that embracing change can actually lead to positive results.
10) Doctor Light (Kimiyo Hoshi)

Dr. Kimiyo Hoshi is unique among classic heroes because she took on the identity of Doctor Light – a name originally used by a villain. The original Doctor Light, Arthur Light, was a well-known enemy of the Justice League. Kimiyo is a much more powerful and honorable person than Arthur, and she can control all forms of light by directly accessing the infinite Light of Creation. She played a key role in saving the multiverse during both the Crisis on Infinite Earths and Dark Crisis events, transforming one of DC Comics’ most villainous legacies into a symbol of hope.
9) Red Tornado

The Red Tornado has undergone a significant transformation, evolving from a simple, powerless crime fighter to a powerful, god-like android. The original Red Tornado was Ma Hunkel, a homemaker who famously fought crime wearing a cooking pot as a helmet. While Ma Hunkel’s story faded into relative obscurity, the second Red Tornado became a well-known robotic hero in the world of comics. This version of Red Tornado is an android originally created by the villainous scientist T. O. Morrow, but he soon turned against his creator and dedicated himself to heroism, becoming a member of both the Justice League and Justice Society. Uniquely, a wind elemental resides within Red Tornado’s metallic body, granting him the ability to create incredibly powerful tornadoes. Furthermore, his longing to become human adds depth and makes him a relatable character.
8) Atom (Ray Palmer)

I’ve always been fascinated by the Atoms, but Ray Palmer really stands out to me. While the original Atom, Al Pratt, got his nickname simply because of his height, Ray earned his – he could actually shrink down to the size of an atom! Al was a great hero and a founding member of the JSA, no doubt, but Ray’s intellect is on another level. He’s not just a fighter; he’s a scientific genius, and that Bio-Belt of his is incredible. Plus, he was an early member of the Justice League and has used his shrinking ability to rescue his teammates more times than I can count. Honestly, Ray’s inventions and his understanding of how everything is built at a fundamental level make him one of the smartest heroes in the DC Universe – something Al, as impressive as he was, never quite reached.
7) Blue Beetle (Jaime Reyes)

For years, Blue Beetle was known as a hero for second-tier characters, but Jaime Reyes completely changed that. He quickly became the most powerful and well-known version of Blue Beetle. Unlike previous Blue Beetles like Dan Garrett and Ted Kord, Jaime’s powers are extraordinary, gained through a symbiotic bond with the alien Scarab, Khaji Da. This Scarab is a living, technological organism that wraps around Jaime, creating powerful armor and a variety of weapons. Despite being a teenager, Jaime distinguished himself as a true hero by successfully defending Earth against an invasion by the alien Reach. He transformed the previously overlooked Blue Beetle into one of DC Comics’ most recognizable teen superheroes.
6) Robin (Tim Drake)

Tim Drake became the third Robin and quickly distinguished himself from those who came before him. After the tragic death of Jason Todd, Batman vowed to never train another sidekick. While Batman had chosen and taken in the first two Robins before they began fighting crime with him, Tim figured out Batman’s secret identity and actively sought him out, determined to become his protégé. Eventually, Batman agreed, and Tim proved to be the most effective Boy Wonder Batman ever had. A skilled detective – considered one of the best in the DC Universe – Tim also helped create the team of young heroes known as Young Justice. Tim is a bright, compassionate hero, and remains Batman’s most dedicated and successful partner.
5) Black Canary (Dinah Laurel Lance)

Dinah Lance is known as Black Canary, a legacy she took from her mother, Dinah Drake, a Golden Age superhero and founding member of the Justice Society. While trained by the JSA’s top fighters, Dinah has become an even more skilled martial artist, often compared to Batman. She’s also famous for her “Canary Cry”—a tremendously powerful scream capable of incredible destruction. Her romantic relationship with Green Arrow is a well-known and beloved pairing in the comic book world. A key member of teams like the Justice League, Birds of Prey, and Team Arrow, Dinah is now widely considered the definitive Black Canary.
4) Mr. Terrific (Michael Holt)

Okay, let me tell you about Mr. Terrific – actually, two Mr. Terrifics. The original, Terry Sloane, was a Golden Age hero – think incredible athlete and brilliant mind – who fought for what was right alongside the Justice Society of America. Sadly, he made the ultimate sacrifice. Fast forward decades, and his legacy inspired Michael Holt, an Olympic gold medalist and one of the smartest people on the planet. This new Mr. Terrific isn’t just brains, though; he’s got cutting-edge tech – these things called T-Spheres that are seriously cool – and he’s a natural leader, having headed up not one, but three teams: the JSA, the Terrifics, and the Terrific Ten. What’s even more amazing? Michael actually met the original Terry during a time-travel adventure, and Terry himself admitted Michael was a better hero. It’s a fantastic passing of the torch, and honestly, Michael Holt is a truly impressive take on the Mr. Terrific concept.
3) Zatanna

Zatanna is the daughter of Zatara, a pioneering magical hero in DC Comics. When an evil witch took Zatara, Zatanna learned magic and quickly became even more powerful. As the first female superhero sorceress in comics and a fan favorite, Zatanna is incredibly skilled in magic – her powers are limited only by her own imagination, allowing her to manipulate time and space. She also formed and leads the Justice League Dark, a team dedicated to protecting the world from dangerous mystical threats. Zatara would be immensely proud of the hero his daughter has become.
2) Green Lantern (Hal Jordan)

While Alan Scott was a powerful hero in the early days of comics, Hal Jordan truly defined the Green Lantern as a universal protector. Hal was the first human accepted into the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic police force, and became a key defender of Earth and the entire universe. His incredible willpower and skill with the power ring make him one of the most powerful Green Lanterns ever. Hal proved that humanity, once deemed unworthy by the Guardians of the Universe, possesses a spirit that can overcome any challenge in the cosmos.
1) Flash (Wally West)

The Flash’s history began with Jay Garrick, but Barry Allen later took on the role. However, it was Wally West, originally Kid Flash, who ultimately became the most significant Scarlet Speedster. After Barry Allen’s death during the Crisis on Infinite Earths, Wally inherited the mantle and spent over two decades exploring and expanding the limits of the Speed Force. His incredible achievements have led many to consider him the fastest being in the entire multiverse. Beyond his speed, Wally is known for his warm personality and for strengthening the bonds within the Flash Family, highlighting the importance of passing down the hero’s legacy. Through both personal stories and world-altering events, Wally West redefined what it meant to be the Flash, making the mantle even more impactful.
