When you go to a horror movie, especially a long-running series, you generally expect some characters will die. That’s part of the deal – you pay to see a scary movie and know people will likely meet a gruesome end. While more sophisticated horror films might not focus on this, it’s a key element in classic franchises like Halloween, Friday the 13th, and A Nightmare on Elm Street, as well as newer ones like Terrifier. So, which villain from these series has actually killed the most people?
Today, we’re discussing the most iconic horror villains. Did your favorite make the list? We’ve left out Jigsaw from the Saw franchise, and we apologize to fans of that series. The films often feature one person setting a trap and another carrying it out, which raises the question: who should be considered the killer – John Kramer (or whoever takes on the Jigsaw persona), or the person who actually commits the murder?
10) Art the Clown — 51

Art the Clown is a relatively new but impactful figure in the world of horror and slasher films. He’s quickly become an icon despite appearing in only three projects: the feature film All Hallows’ Eve and a short film from 2011. It’s worth noting that some of the nine kills in All Hallows’ Eve are shared with other characters, including The Pig Man, The Bird Man, and members of a cult.
Between the initial short film and the 2016 feature film, Art the Clown committed 11 murders. Though Terrifier 2 was very violent, it featured only nine kills. Terrifier 3 significantly increased the body count, with 22 murders – some assisted by Victoria.
9) Ghostface — 55

It’s true that multiple people have worn the Ghostface costume throughout the Scream movies. But because the costume and the franchise are so recognizable, we’ll treat Ghostface as one single horror villain for the sake of discussion.
Across the first three Scream movies, Ghostface killed a total of 23 people, including Maureen Prescott. Scream 4 added nine more victims (excluding the two fake openings), bringing the total to 32. The subsequent two films directed by Radio Silence increased that number to 48, and with the events of Scream 7, the total kill count now stands at 55.
8) Leprechaun — 57

The Leprechaun films were always intended as lighthearted entertainment. The six movies starring Warwick Davis – generally considered the best ones – lean more towards comedy than scary horror, even though the leprechaun still manages to cause a lot of mayhem and ‘kills’.
Over the course of the first four Leprechaun films, the mischievous creature claimed 24 victims, often delivering quips as he did. He added another 20 to that total in the two Hood movies. The Leprechaun: Origins reboot brought the total to 51 with seven more deaths, and Leprechaun Returns—which at least featured a traditionally-appearing Leprechaun—accounted for six more. In total, the Leprechaun has been responsible for the deaths of 57 people.
7) Candyman — 57

The first Candyman film relies more on building psychological tension than graphic violence. Thankfully, the subsequent sequels and the recent reboot attempted to maintain that focus, though with varying degrees of success.
As a huge fan of the Candyman series, I’ve always been keeping track of his victims! It’s pretty grim, but fascinating. Before the first movie even starts, 18 people who participated in the lynching of Daniel Robitaille had already met terrible ends. He then claimed five more lives before he ever crossed paths with Helen Lyle, bringing the total to 23. Throughout the first film, that number climbed to 29. By the end of Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh, the body count reached 38. Then Candyman 3: Day of the Dead – sadly, the last one with Tony Todd – pushed it to 44. And finally, the recent reboot added 13 more victims, bringing the grand total to a chilling 57. It really shows just how long and deadly Candyman’s legacy has been!
6) Leatherface — 63

Okay, let’s talk Leatherface. There have been nine films featuring this iconic slasher, and honestly, when you look at the body count, it’s surprisingly low. The original Texas Chain Saw Massacre had four deaths, which is pretty restrained for the genre. The sequel bumped that up slightly to three. But things get weird – Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III actually decreased the kills to just two! And Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation? Leatherface only manages one victim, poor Barry. So, across those first four films, Leatherface is responsible for a total of ten onscreen kills. Compared to other horror franchises, it’s… well, let’s just say he’s not the most prolific killer. And even with the later films added in, it still doesn’t quite reach the levels of some of his contemporaries. More movies are always in the works though, so maybe he’ll pick up the pace!
Across the various Texas Chainsaw films, Leatherface is directly responsible for the deaths of 14 people. The film Leatherface added another five victims, Texas Chainsaw 3D brought the total to 27 with eight more deaths (including one indirectly caused by Leatherface), and Texas Chainsaw Massacre accounted for 10 additional deaths. When factoring in the kills committed by other members of the Sawyer family, the death toll rises to 63. This includes deaths like Lefty Enright in the second film, who was killed by Drayton Sawyer. Overall, the Sawyer family has murdered a total of 63 people throughout the series.
5) Victor Crowley — 68

Victor Crowley, a more recent horror movie villain from the Hatchet series, has racked up a high body count over four films. He killed nine people in the original Hatchet, then increased that to sixteen in Hatchet II, with some of those deaths shown in flashbacks. Hatchet III saw a significant jump to twenty-nine kills, while Victor Crowley featured fourteen victims.
4) Freddy Krueger — 85

As a horror fan, I’ve always been fascinated by how characters like Candyman, Chucky, and Freddy Krueger get reimagined over the years. With Freddy, it’s especially interesting because you really have different versions – the classic Freddy we all fear, the truly terrifying ‘Entity’ from New Nightmare, and then the rebooted version from Platinum Dunes. It’s funny, Leatherface and Jason Voorhees have gone through similar treatment too – multiple takes on the same iconic villain.
The first episode of Freddy’s Nightmares established that Freddy Krueger killed around 20 people before he began invading dreams. While that show had other Freddy-centric episodes, the premiere is considered the most accurate to the series’ core story. From the first Nightmare on Elm Street film up to Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, another 46 deaths can be counted, including the spirits seen attached to Krueger. In New Nightmare, the Entity was responsible for four deaths. During Freddy vs. Jason, Jason did most of the killing, but Freddy still killed three people (excluding the camp counselor in Lori’s dream). Finally, before the events of the 2010 film, Krueger killed eight more people, and four during the film itself. Adding all of this up, the total number of confirmed Freddy Krueger victims is 85.
3) Michael Myers — 184

While Leatherface has been around the longest as a franchise, Michael Myers appears in more films overall. However, he wasn’t in Halloween III: Season of the Witch, meaning he’s only actually in twelve out of the thirteen movies. This total includes the first five of the original six films (which have multiple timelines), the two movies released after Scream, the two directed by Rob Zombie, and the recent trilogy by David Gordon Green.
Across the Halloween film series, a total of 184 onscreen deaths have occurred. The original Halloween and its sequel contributed 14 deaths, while the films from Halloween 4 through Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers added 41. Halloween H20 and Resurrection accounted for another 17, including the unfortunate paramedic Laurie Strode mistakenly kills. Despite its flaws, Resurrection is included in the count. The two Rob Zombie films contributed a significant 43 deaths. Finally, the recent trilogy – Halloween (2018), Halloween Kills, and Halloween Ends – added 69 deaths, including those committed by Corey Cunningham in Halloween Ends, which are counted due to the possibility of Michael Myers influencing his actions.
2) Jason Voorhees — 191

We’ve bent the rules a bit on this list. For example, the character of Candyman wasn’t always Daniel Robitaille, and Corey Cunningham isn’t exactly Michael Myers, but he’s very similar. We’re going to apply this same logic to Jason Voorhees, but only in some cases. In the first Friday the 13th movie, it’s Mrs. Voorhees doing the killing, not Jason, so those deaths don’t count. However, in Friday the 13th: A New Beginning, Roy Burns is the killer, but he’s disguised as Jason, which is close enough. And in Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday, the possessed killers are essentially parts of Jason himself, so those definitely count – even more than Roy Burns’ case.
Let’s break down the body count in the Friday the 13th series. In the second film, Jason Voorhees killed nine people (excluding one ambiguous case). He upped that to 21 in the third movie and 34 in The Final Chapter. A New Beginning added another 19 (not counting those killed in the opening dream), bringing the total to 53. The sixth, seventh, and eighth films saw the count rise to 71, 86, and 106 respectively, though that doesn’t include those who disappeared or drowned. Jason Goes to Hell added 22 more victims, and Jason X brought the total to 128 with an additional 23 kills (excluding virtual campers and those on the spaceship Solaris). In Freddy vs. Jason, Jason killed 19 people outside of dream sequences, and the rebooted version in Platinum Dunes’ film killed 13. This brings the confirmed total to 183. If you include the kills from the extended version, “Sweet Revenge,” the total jumps to 191.
1) Chucky (& Tiffany) — 195

Chucky’s film history has been a bit of a rollercoaster, but he’s arguably the slasher villain who’s benefited the most from new versions and continuations. Following the original three movies, there was a self-aware phase with Bride of Chucky and Seed of Chucky, then two more traditional direct-to-video sequels – Curse of Chucky and Cult of Chucky. After that came a remake that wasn’t entirely successful, but had some good ideas, and most recently, a three-season television show.
Since Chucky is essentially Charles Lee Ray trapped inside a doll, we’ve included the 35 murders committed by his human form, as seen in the TV series. Then, across the original three movies, he killed another 19 people. Along with Tiffany, they were responsible for 21 deaths in Bride of Chucky and Seed of Chucky. Between Curse of Chucky and Cult of Chucky, they added 18 more to the count. The remake brought the total up by nine (including victims of the Buddi drones), and Seasons 1, 2, and 3 of the new TV series added 20, 21, and a massive 52 kills respectively. Adding all of that up, Chucky and Tiffany have been responsible for a total of 195 deaths in both their human and doll forms.
