Paramount+ has become a major player in streaming thanks to a few key strengths. While shows like *Star Trek* used to be available on Netflix, Paramount+ is now the exclusive home for the entire *Star Trek* universe, including new releases. Popular original crime dramas created by Taylor Sheridan, the mind behind *Yellowstone*, also draw a lot of viewers. What really sets Paramount+ apart, though, is its inclusion of the Showtime library, offering both classic shows and recent hits from the last 25 years.
Paramount+ offers so many shows and movies that subscribers can easily feel overwhelmed and unsure of what to watch.
1) Escape at Dannemora
Before creating the hit Apple TV+ show *Severance*, Ben Stiller gained critical acclaim for this seven-part Showtime miniseries. *Escape at Dannemora*, starring Benicio del Toro, Patricia Arquette, and Paul Dano (all Emmy nominees), is based on the real story of a daring prison break from Clinton Correctional Facility in New York. The series unravels the complex events leading up to the escape in a suspenseful and surprising way, gradually revealing the full picture. While the slow burn pace might not appeal to everyone, patient viewers will find the unfolding narrative a compelling and rewarding drama.
2) Bargain
If you’re a Paramount+ subscriber, you might have already heard about *Bargain*, a South Korean thriller that’s truly one-of-a-kind. The series starts with a secret meeting of illegal organ traffickers, which is suddenly thrown into chaos when an earthquake hits. Think disaster movie meets crime thriller – the plot is incredibly unique. It stands out even among other series, and it currently boasts a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it a must-watch.
3) Evil
Despite being a supernatural thriller, the TV series *Evil* is a compelling drama that will appeal to viewers even if they don’t typically enjoy horror. The show centers around a team investigating the supernatural for the Catholic Church, but it’s surprisingly fun and even features a popcorn-loving demon! If you’re looking for a show with a procedural format that isn’t just another police drama, *Evil* is worth checking out. While it might remind some viewers of *The X-Files*, *Evil* delves into deeper philosophical questions, using the supernatural setting to explore complex ideas.
4) Mayor of Kingstown
Taylor Sheridan’s *Mayor of Kingstown* is a gripping crime thriller and his first TV series outside of the *Yellowstone* universe. The show centers on the McLusky family, who control the private prisons in Kingstown, and explores the complex world of law enforcement, incarceration, and the business of for-profit prisons. Jeremy Renner gives a standout performance as the lead, and it could be his most defining role, even surpassing his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
5) Lioness
Beyond its impressive cast – including Zoe Saldana, Nicole Kidman, and Morgan Freeman – *Lioness* offers something truly unique on television. The show centers around a CIA team of highly skilled female soldiers and operatives working to combat terrorism. But these aren’t typical undercover agents; they’re fully capable in any combat situation.
Fans of *Yellowstone* might be intrigued by this new thriller series because it’s created by the same person, Taylor Sheridan. However, it feels more like his work on *Sicario* than *Yellowstone*. With two seasons already available and a third coming soon, it stands out as a truly unique show, not just on Paramount+, but across all of streaming.
6) Twin Peaks
David Lynch and Mark Frost’s *Twin Peaks* was a groundbreaking TV series that changed how television stories were told. However, simply calling it great doesn’t fully capture its impact. The show brought Lynch’s unique filmmaking style – seen in movies like *Eraserhead*, *The Elephant Man*, and *Blue Velvet* – to the world of long-running television. It created a mystery series inspired by classic soap operas, with complex storylines, recurring characters, and new faces appearing often. Even if you know the major plot twists, *Twin Peaks* is a show best enjoyed for its atmosphere and unfolding story, rather than just the final revelations.
If you enjoy the original *Twin Peaks* series, you’ll be happy to know that the 2017 continuation, *Twin Peaks: The Return*, is also available on Paramount+. Unfortunately, the prequel movie, *Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me*, isn’t currently streaming there.
7) Killing Eve
Killing Eve stands out as a spy thriller with a truly distinctive style. The show centers around Eve Polastri, an MI5 analyst played by Sandra Oh, and Villanelle, a skilled assassin portrayed by Jodie Comer. The two women develop a mutual obsession, though from very different perspectives. Eve starts to investigate Villanelle because of her mysteriousness and the realization that she’s behind a string of connected murders. Meanwhile, Villanelle enjoys the attention Eve gives her and wants to turn their connection into a playful chase.
Jodie Comer’s portrayal of the cunning and unpredictable Villanelle is a standout performance, making her one of the most surprising characters on TV recently – and that’s high praise for a show full of twists. While the later seasons aren’t as popular as the first two, viewers on Paramount+ can still enjoy a thrilling and captivating spy story, but it might not be available for long.
8) Dexter
For many, Showtime became known for its hit series *Dexter*, which originally aired from 2006 to 2013. Despite some criticism of how the show ended, it’s still a compelling watch. The constantly unfolding thriller aspects will keep you hooked, and Michael C. Hall’s performance as Dexter is always captivating, even when the plot itself feels a little weak. While anti-hero characters are common on TV now, Dexter remains particularly entertaining.
If you enjoyed or disliked the ending of the original Dexter series, there’s more to watch! You can find the sequel series, *Dexter: New Blood*, and the latest continuation, *Dexter: Resurrection*, on Paramount+. Plus, a prequel series called *Dexter: Original Sin* is also available.
9) Freaks and Geeks
Revisiting *Freaks and Geeks* today feels like opening a time capsule. Though it only lasted one season, the show had a huge impact and launched the careers of many now-famous actors, including Linda Cardellini, James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, and Busy Philipps. With only 18 episodes, it’s easily binge-worthy for a weekend.
Despite being firmly rooted in the 1980s high school experience, *Freaks and Geeks* remains a beloved comedy because its stories feel universal. Whether you’re a teenager or well into adulthood, the show offers relatable characters and a heartwarming, funny narrative that continues to resonate with audiences.
10) Penny Dreadful
If you’re a horror fan, don’t miss Penny Dreadful, a fantastic show currently available on Paramount+. This Victorian-era drama expertly blends classic monsters like vampires, werewolves, and Frankenstein’s creature into a thrilling story. With captivating performances from Eva Green, Timothy Dalton, and Josh Hartnett, it’s truly unique among streaming shows – a must-watch if you can appreciate its dark and unusual style. Penny Dreadful offers three seasons of gothic atmosphere and compelling storytelling for those who enjoy a bit of the strange and spooky.
