For every long-running series like Supernatural and Buffy the Vampire Slayer that we get to enjoy, there are many more hidden gems that never got their chance due to various factors. Sometimes it boils down to a numbers game, where these shows gain popularity after it’s too late for them to be saved. Other times, budget constraints or behind-the-scenes issues play a role. Regardless of the reason, most fans lament the loss of potentially captivating storylines that never got the chance to unfold.
As a devoted cinephile, I’ve noticed an interesting twist in the world of streaming services lately. These platforms, once hailed for reviving cancelled shows, have now found themselves in the hot seat, cancelling numerous productions they once saved. It seems they might be missing the irony in their current predicament.
1) Galavant
If you’re a fan of stories that blend history, fantasy, and laughter, then “Galavant” is just the ticket! This series made its debut in 2015 with an audacious spirit, taking risks left and right. The narrative danced between fantasy and humor, and the characters would break into song at the unlikeliest of moments, making it a truly entertaining experience. It was nothing short of delightful!
Galavant is a series that reveled in its exaggerated style and enjoyed being alive. The storyline encompassed various elements: love, humor, adventure, knights, sorcery, and a dash of confusion. Remarkably, Galavant made it through two complete seasons, yet failed to secure another one, even though the second season hinted at future developments.

2) Warrior Nun
Warrior Nun, a thrilling blend of action, fantasy, and supernatural elements, quickly became a hit on the streaming platform. However, fans were taken aback when Netflix announced the series’ cancellation. Warrior Nun is an adaptation from Ben Dunn’s graphic novel series, and its popularity could have served as another testament to successful adaptations. The story revolves around Ava Silva (Alba Baptista), a 19-year-old nun who unexpectedly finds herself in the midst of a significant conflict.
The series titled “Warrior Nun” ran for two strong seasons on Netflix, but unfortunately, the streaming service has decided not to produce any more episodes. As a passionate fan, I must say that the captivating series “Lovecraft Country” garnered a warm reception from viewers and earned respectable critical acclaim. Yet, during the preparation for its second season, HBO Max unexpectedly announced its termination. Consequently, fans like myself are left with merely one season to immerse ourselves in this extraordinary world.

4) Shadow and Bone
Enthusiasts of books couldn’t contain their excitement upon hearing that Netflix would be bringing Leigh Bardugo’s Shadow and Bone series to life. However, a bit of bewilderment and worry set in when it was announced that this adaptation would incorporate elements and characters from Bardugo’s Six of Crows series as well, essentially blending two narratives into one. While it could potentially work, wouldn’t it be more beneficial to develop two superb series using the material available separately?
In my opinion, the first season of “Shadow and Bone” was a resounding success that left fans enamored, notwithstanding the transformations it underwent throughout its run. However, I found Season 2 to be somewhat divisive, with viewers expressing a sense of being hurried through various storylines. Unfortunately, this hasty approach seemed to have contributed to its decline, as it would have been wiser for the series to remain divided into two distinct parts from the outset. This adjustment might have addressed the pacing issues, along with virtually every other concern raised by fans.

5) Kaos
Fans of Jeff Goldblum might find it surprising that a project featuring him has been canceled. After all, it’s a mythological dark comedy produced by Netflix, which usually guarantees a wide audience. However, due to Netflix’s complex algorithm, the show may have flown under many viewers’ radars, leading some to suggest it was unfairly overshadowed. Goldblum portrayed Zeus, a character known for his insecurities and occasional cruelty from Greek mythology. The cast also included notable actors like Janet McTeer, David Thewlis, and Stephen Dillane.
Although generally praised by critics, Netflix opted to end Kaos after just one season. Fans lament that this sharp and humorous series didn’t have enough time to fully find its footing, understanding that it takes some shows a while to really get going.

As a dedicated fan of both fantasy and horror genres, I found myself utterly captivated by the exceptional series known as “Constantine.” It masterfully blended elements of mythical creatures, dark arts, and the supernatural, keeping me on the edge of my seat. To add to its allure, it skillfully incorporated a gradual unfolding mystery and numerous character-focused narratives that made viewers deeply invested in the storyline.
Though the character from “Constantine” later made appearances within the “Arrowverse,” sadly the show itself was only granted a solitary season. This means many intriguing plot threads were left unresolved, leaving me and fellow fans yearning for more closure. Alas, it’s challenging to move on knowing that so much remains unexplored.

7) Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire
If you weren’t already guessing from the title, “Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire” is a delightful blend of fantasy and humor. I find myself drawn into a whimsical adventure where an unlikely band of heroes, including a leader with doubts, a warrior steeped in pagan ways, a cunning warlock with a knack for trickery, and a clumsy servant, embark on a quest to vanquish the wicked ruler of their realm.
The series titled “Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire” playfully satirizes traditional fantasy elements and carries a distinct flavor reminiscent of “Monty Python.” Despite being limited to just one season, it offers a one-of-a-kind journey for its audience. Unfortunately, due to financial constraints, further episodes could not be produced, thereby concluding the story.
8) Da Vinci’s Demons
The show “Da Vinci’s Demons” was quite bold in its approach since historical fantasy isn’t often spotlighted. Unfortunately, it seems this gamble didn’t result in long-term success as the series was eventually canceled. Nevertheless, the narrative delved into an imaginative portrayal of Leonardo da Vinci’s life, incorporating some magical or fantastical elements throughout.
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I can attest that Da Vinci’s Demons tirelessly strove to achieve an exquisite blend of historical authenticity and magical whimsy, crafting a series that left numerous fans captivated. Over the course of three thrilling seasons, this show managed to weave a spellbinding tale before its untimely cancellation. However, the showrunner has hinted at potential plans for a miniseries, offering a tantalizing prospect for closure to our unfinished story.

9) The Midnight Club
If you’re a fan of fantasy and appreciate an anthology-style narrative, you might want to explore “The Midnight Club.” This series is inspired by Christopher Pike’s novel and revolves around a group of young individuals battling terminal illnesses. Each night, they share chilling stories among themselves, and remarkably, these narratives come to life on screen for the audience to experience.
Each episode of “The Midnight Club” presents two chilling tales, making it an engaging yet concise format. Although the series had a broader narrative thread involving the principal characters, this arc was tragically unfinished when the show was unexpectedly terminated. The showrunner has been candid about future plans, offering some comfort in that regard. Regrettably, “The Midnight Club” was compelled to end after just ten episodes.

10) Cursed
In various forms or another, tales from the Arthurian legend are ubiquitous. It might be this familiarity that made it difficult for the series Cursed to continue beyond a single season. The show is adapted from a graphic novel co-created by Frank Miller and Tom Wheeler. The narrative primarily revolves around Nimue, a Fey woman who eventually transforms into the Lady of the Lake.
Instead, the narrative unfolds in a time prior to those periods, offering insights into Nimue’s past. Fans appreciated its feminist interpretation of Arthurian legends and generally gave positive reviews. Nevertheless, Netflix decided against renewing it for another season, seemingly unaware that their neglect of the show might go unnoticed by fans.
