Since its launch in 2014, Tubi has managed to stand out among heavyweights like Netflix, Disney+, and HBO Max by providing a free, ad-supported streaming service. Given that some of these paid services also incorporate ads, Tubi’s success is quite remarkable. Its popularity wouldn’t be as significant if it didn’t boast an equally impressive selection of content. Over time, the quality of its offerings has only improved, with a vast array of movies and shows available, including horror productions that we are discussing.

To put it another way, the selection of horror movies on Tubi is outstanding, yet there are many other terrifying films worthy of mention that didn’t make the final cut such as: The Slumber Party Massacre, the original My Bloody Valentine, Creepshow 2, Terrifier, Eden Lake, Sleepaway Camp, and Mom and Dad. These titles may not remain on Tubi for a long period, so be sure to watch them while they’re still available.

1) The Stepfather

Driven by an exceptionally chilling portrayal by Terry O’Quinn, The Stepfather stands out as one of the most authentic psychological horror films of the 1980s. The plot is straightforward: a ruthless serial killer manages to charm his way into families, only to kill them when they inevitably fall short of his unrealistic expectations in some minor way. This inevitability arises because O’Quinn’s character, Jerry Blake (also known as Henry Morrison and Bill Hodgkins), is virtually impossible to satisfy. He dreams of a perfect, storybook life, but the world doesn’t always conform to such idealized narratives. Unfortunately for his new wife, Susan, and stepdaughter, Stephanie, he struggles to distinguish reality from the fantasy of a fairy tale.

Tubi offers “Stepfather II,” directed by O’Quinn, as well as “Stepfather III” without O’Quinn, and a 2009 remake of the series.

2) Hellraiser

Clive Barker’s movie “Hellraiser” is exceptionally creative in the horror genre, drawing viewers into its dark, grisly universe and keeping them captivated until the end. The demonic creatures known as Cenobites, each with a unique, terrifying appearance that lingers in your mind, are particularly memorable, though they do not dominate the original film. Instead, it focuses on Clare Higgins’ character, Julia Cotton, who entices and sacrifices numerous men in an attempt to resurrect her late brother-in-law, Frank, with whom she had a brief, sadomasochistic relationship. He is currently evading the Cenobites, the demonic headhunters and tormentors mentioned earlier. The film also features standout performances from Ashley Laurence as Kirsty, Julia’s daughter-in-law (one of horror cinema’s strongest final girls), and Andrew Robinson as Julia’s husband, Larry. As such, “Hellraiser” is a classic horror movie worthy of an A grade.

As a follower, I’d like to share that the streaming service has more chapters from this series available too. Among them are “Hellbound: Hellraiser II”, “Hellraiser Revelations”, and “Hellraiser: Judgment”. If you ask me, “Revelations” and “Judgment” can be skipped over as they lack Doug Bradley’s portrayal of Pinhead. However, “Hellbound” is a fantastic sequel that could enhance your horror movie marathon, especially when paired with the first installment for a double feature night.

3) The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

Tobe Hooper’s low-budget movie, “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre,” remains one of the most terrifying films ever produced. The world portrayed in this film feels incredibly authentic, and despite minimal graphic violence, it effectively conveys the suffering experienced by the Sawyer family’s victims.

Apart from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (directed by Hooper, once more), you’ll find Texas Chainsaw from 2013 and Leatherface from 2017 on Tubi as well. If you’re interested in exploring more of the director’s movies, I recommend Lifeforce, Eaten Alive, and Invaders from Mars – all of which can be found on Tubi too.

4) Friday the 13th

Initially met with a lot of debate and unfavorable reviews upon its debut, “Friday the 13th” has nevertheless spawned one of horror cinema’s enduring and influential film series. Interestingly enough, the violence in the “Saw” franchise appears quite mild when compared to that of “Friday the 13th.

On Tubi, you’ll find just the original “Friday the 13th,” but it’s often agreed that this initial installment is exceptional. While many of the sequels are also top-notch, if you’re in the mood for another iconic ’80s slasher movie during a holiday, consider “My Bloody Valentine” or “Prom Night.

5) An American Werewolf in London

The movie “An American Werewolf in London” represented a significant change of pace for director John Landis, having previously directed comedies like “The Kentucky Fried Movie,” “National Lampoon’s Animal House,” and “The Blues Brothers.” Following this film, he continued to direct comedies such as “Trading Places,” “Spies Like Us,” and “Coming to America.” However, unlike his previous works, “An American Werewolf” is primarily a horror movie, albeit one with clever comic moments. It stands out for its gripping central relationship between the characters played by David Naughton and Jenny Agutter, a memorable performance from the deceased character portrayed by Griffin Dunne, an iconic werewolf transformation scene, and overall, it’s a blend of horror and comedy.

Additionally, you’ll find “An American Werewolf in Paris” available on Tubi too, although it may not match the brilliance of its London counterpart. However, for fans of ’90s cinema, it’s still a worthwhile watch. If you’re looking for another top-notch werewolf movie on the platform, don’t forget to check out “Werewolves Within”.

6) Killer Klowns from Outer Space

The movie “Killer Klowns from Outer Space,” created by the Chiodo Brothers who are skilled makeup artists, is one of the ’80s most outstanding cult films. It masterfully combines horror and humor (with a strong emphasis on humor), making it incredibly entertaining. It’s also intriguing to ponder why the Chiodos haven’t attempted to create a full-fledged film from scratch since then.

Tubi offers a variety of zany horror comedies that pair well with movies like “Killer Klowns”, for example, “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes”, “The Return of the Living Dead”, “Critters”, and all six films featuring Warwick Davis as the Leprechaun.

7) 28 Weeks Later

If you’re eagerly awaiting the release of “28 Years Later” as one of the summer 2025’s anticipated horror movies, now is a great opportunity to familiarize yourself with the earlier films in the series. Unfortunately, “28 Days Later” has recently returned to streaming platforms but isn’t available on Tubi.

They possess another equally impressive film titled “28 Weeks Later.” This movie starts off powerfully and maintains that pace throughout its duration. However, disregard “28 Months After,” as it’s a low-budget imitation with no connection to the original.

8) Hush

As Mike Flanagan’s latest film, “The Life of Chuck“, graces our movie screens, it’s high time for us film enthusiasts to delve into the rest of this masterful director’s works! To savor his chilling tales, you’ll need a Netflix membership to stream his captivating series, such as “The Haunting of Hill House“, “Midnight Mass“, and “The Fall of the House of Usher“. However, if you’re looking for one of his finest films without the subscription, check out Tubi! Enjoy the thrill!

Among Flanagan’s other three films based on Stephen King novels, specifically “Gerald’s Game” and “Doctor Sleep”, are not available on Tubi. However, the thriller movie “Hush” can be found there. It’s a skillfully crafted suspense film featuring a man in a mask, with an outstanding lead performance by Flanagan’s spouse, Kate Siegel, who also collaborated with him in writing the script.

9) Get Out

Jordan Peele’s movie “Get Out” stands out not only as one of the best horror films of the 2010s, but also as one of the decade’s most significant movies across all genres. Unlike many other horror movies, even the very best ones, it garnered a great deal of attention during awards season, and rightly so. It excels in creating fear, but what sets it apart is its ability to stimulate thought.

Peele’s films, such as “Us” and “Nope“, aren’t available on Tubi, but it’s clear that they didn’t quite reach the powerful impact of his initial directorial effort. While both movies are entertaining and intriguing, “Get Out” stands alone in its category.

10) Gremlins

As a firm believer, I’d say that Joe Dante’s Gremlins stands not just as one of the best horror movies from 1984, but as one of its finest overall films. It’s an adventure brimming with originality and undeniable entertainment value that easily makes it a must-watch from the ’80s. What’s more, for those family movie nights, Gremlins is a fantastic introduction to horror for younger audiences, providing just the right balance of thrill and fun.

After finishing “Gremlins”, give Dante’s “Gremlins 2: The New Batch” a try next. Though it has a different tone, it remains an entertaining, humorous journey.
