It’s a total 80s action movie cliché, super over-the-top and not exactly a brain-teaser, but it’s a bizarrely fun ride if you’re in the mood for some mindless, macho mayhem.
3) Under the Skin – Pluto TV & Tubi
This film, originally a novel, is known for being quite unusual. Starring Scarlett Johansson, it came out in 2013 and received more praise from critics than from regular moviegoers. The story centers around an alien disguised as a woman and the person watching over her, as they prey on people through seduction or violence. The movie doesn’t offer any easy answers, instead posing more questions, and is intentionally ambiguous. However, it clearly critiques the idea of excessive consumerism.
2) Timecrimes – Tubi
The film Timecrimes received overwhelmingly positive reviews, earning a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The story follows Hector, who initially spies on a woman in the woods, and then discovers she’s been attacked. He’s subsequently attacked himself by a bandaged man, and manages to escape, finding refuge in a nearby scientific facility. There, a scientist convinces him to use a time machine to travel back just a few hours to observe his earlier self. It’s a character-focused science fiction thriller with a suspenseful, complex plot reminiscent of Christopher Nolan’s work, building to a chilling ending.
1) Event Horizon – Tubi
Many film fans consider the 1997 sci-fi horror movie Event Horizon to be seriously underrated. The story follows a spaceship that vanished seven years prior and suddenly reappears, sending out a distress call. A rescue team investigates, only to find something terrifying has taken control of the ship. With strong performances from Sam Neill and Laurence Fishburne, it had the potential to become a classic like Hellraiser or Alien, though it definitely has its own unique style. The film’s biggest issue? Studio executives toned down the graphic content—including a notorious scene involving extreme violence—after test audiences found it too intense. While that specific scene never made the final cut, you can now stream the rest of Event Horizon on Tubi.
