10) After Yang
Starring Colin Farrell, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Justin H. Min, After Yang is a beautifully crafted science fiction drama. The film follows Jake as he tries to fix Yang, the android companion his daughter loves, after it stops working. While repairing Yang, Jake uncovers details about its past and its place within his family, leading him to realize he’s been disconnected from his wife and daughter. The film is a moving and insightful story about family and connection, and critics agree – it currently holds an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
9) Equals
Like many A24 films, Equals is beautifully made and features a strong cast. Though it moves a bit slowly at times, it tells a surprisingly timely and touching love story. The film is set in a futuristic society called the Collective, where genetic engineering has eliminated all emotions to create a seemingly perfect, crime-free world. However, Nia (Kristen Stewart) and Silas (Nicholas Hoult), who work together, begin to feel an undeniable connection, leading to a secret and complicated romance.
8) The 5th Wave
Whether The 5th Wave is a truly good movie is up for discussion, but it’s definitely entertaining. The film follows humanity’s struggle to survive after a series of devastating alien attacks that nearly wipe out the planet, bringing earthquakes, tsunamis, and disease. Teenager Cassie Sullivan (Chloë Grace Moretz) is separated from her family and desperately searches for her little brother, Sam. She reluctantly teams up with Evan Walker (Alex Roe), hoping he can help her survive the latest alien onslaught – the fifth wave – and reunite with Sam.
7) Under The Silver Lake
As a huge A24 fan, I have to say Under the Silver Lake is another fantastic film from them. It stars Andrew Garfield and Riley Keough in this really quirky, almost dreamlike sci-fi story. It follows Sam, a guy who’s totally lost and unhappy with his life, until he meets this intriguing woman, Sarah, at his apartment complex. When she vanishes, he gets completely obsessed with finding out what happened to her, and it throws him headfirst into a wild mystery full of secrets and conspiracies hidden within Los Angeles.
6) A.I. Artificial Intelligence
I truly believe A.I. is a masterpiece that never quite got the recognition it deserved. It stars Haley Joel Osment and Henry Swinton, and tells the story of a family formed around David, a robotic boy created by Cybertronics to learn how to love. He’s adopted by a couple, and they really become a family, but then things take a turn and David’s life gets really difficult. One critic put it perfectly: Steven Spielberg managed to blend his hopeful style with the darker, more unsettling feel of Stanley Kubrick’s work, and the result is just amazing.
5) Jurassic World
Although the newer Jurassic World movies don’t quite live up to the original Jurassic Park, prioritizing flashy visuals over a strong story, they are undeniably entertaining. These films are pure action, and their massive budgets are well-spent on incredible special effects and scenery. Jurassic World introduces a luxurious resort called Jurassic World, filled with a dinosaur-themed amusement park—including a terrifyingly smart new dinosaur called the Indominus rex. Naturally, the Indominus rex breaks free, causing chaos, shutting down the park, and unleashing the dinosaurs. This puts everyone in danger, including the nephews of a park executive. Now, a skilled raptor trainer must use his expertise to rescue the boys and the other tourists before they become dinosaur food.
4) Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
Originally intended as the last film in the rebooted series before plans for Jurassic World: Rebirth emerged, this story is set three years after the fall of Jurassic World. Owen Grady, now a father, and Claire Dearing, who’s become an animal rights advocate, return to Isla Nublar to rescue the dinosaurs before a volcanic eruption destroys them all. During their mission, they face frightening new, genetically engineered dinosaurs and discover a greedy scheme that could threaten the entire planet.
3) Real Steel
This sci-fi action movie pits humans against robots in a classic underdog story. Real Steel follows Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman), a former boxer who now scrapes by promoting robot fights after robots took over the sport. Down on his luck, Charlie hesitantly joins forces with his son to build a robot fighter and try to win a championship – a chance for both of them to turn things around. While the story is a bit wild, it’s ultimately a heartwarming film packed with exciting action that’s sure to entertain.
2) Save Yourselves!
Save Yourselves! is a clever and funny sci-fi film that stands out with its quirky humor and relatable portrayal of millennial anxieties, offering a lighter take on a typically serious genre. The movie follows a young couple from Brooklyn who go to a cabin in upstate New York hoping to spend quality time together, but while they’re disconnecting, the world is invaded – and they don’t even realize it! One critic called it “a charming, low-budget comedy that felt surprisingly real.”
1) The Fly
Considered a landmark achievement in film, The Fly brilliantly blends science fiction and body horror with a surprisingly tender, yet terrifying, love story. Starring Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis, the movie follows scientist Seth Brundle, who invents a teleportation device. During a self-test, a fly enters the machine, leading to a horrifying cellular merging. While seemingly fine at first, Brundle gradually transforms into a human-fly hybrid, a disgusting and terrifying process his girlfriend can only watch in horror.
