DC Comics has had an eventful decade so far. While the ‘DC Rebirth’ era initially boosted sales in the mid-2010s, by 2020, Marvel was leading in the comic book market. The years following ‘Death Metal’ saw DC focus heavily on Batman with the ‘Infinite Frontier’ initiative, which wasn’t a hit with all fans. However, 2023’s ‘Dawn of DC’ brought positive change, and DC has been steadily gaining momentum since then. Despite some ups and downs, the 2020s have delivered some great stories, and DC is currently in a stronger position than it was earlier in the decade.
While what makes a comic ‘good’ is always a matter of opinion, I believe DC has consistently published the best mainstream superhero comics over the past five years. They’ve delivered truly outstanding stories featuring DC’s most iconic characters, and these ten comics from the 2020s really stand out as examples of that success. They also prove that DC offers much more than just stories about Batman.
10) Dark Knights: Death Metal
As a huge DC fan, I was so hyped for *Dark Knights: Death Metal* by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, especially after loving *Dark Knights: Metal*! It felt like everything from the past few years was building to this – Perpetua and the Batman Who Laughs had really taken over everything, mashing up the whole DC Multiverse with the Dark Multiverse. Honestly, Wonder Woman felt like our only chance, and she came up with a plan that was seriously epic – it wasn’t just about beating the bad guys, but saving *everything*! This book isn’t trying to be super philosophical, it’s just pure, awesome action, and it totally delivers on that promise. The stakes were massive, and it didn’t disappoint. For me, the writing and art were top-notch, making it the best DC event I’ve read so far this decade.
9) “Warworld Saga”
The Superman comics are currently experiencing a creative high point. After a successful relaunch with DC Rebirth brought back a beloved version of the character, things initially went well. Unfortunately, a change in writers led to a decline in quality. Things improved significantly when Grant Morrison wrote a final Superman story hinting at a weakening of his powers, paving the way for Phillip Kennedy Johnson to take over *Action Comics*. Johnson then delivered the “Warworld Saga,” a critically acclaimed story arc spanning *Action Comics* #1029-1046 and concluding with *Superman: Warworld Apocalypse*. This epic focused on a vulnerable Superman and the Authority’s fight to liberate Warworld from Mongul, dramatically expanding the lore of Warworld while delivering a truly exceptional Superman story. “Warworld Saga” is considered one of the best modern Superman stories, and it powerfully demonstrated what makes a great Superman narrative.
8) Stargirl: The Lost Children
Geoff Johns became well-known in the 2000s, playing a key role in the success of the Justice Society of America. But his first big project for DC was *Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E.S.*, which introduced the hero Courtney Whitmore, who would become Stargirl. Johns created Stargirl as a tribute to his sister, who tragically passed away in a plane crash, and she quickly became a popular teen hero. While the character faced challenges in the 2010s, Johns brought her back as part of the “New Golden Age” initiative, collaborating with longtime Stargirl artist Todd Nauck on *Stargirl: The Lost Children*. The story follows Stargirl as she discovers a villain called the Childminder is holding a group of unfamiliar teen heroes captive. What unfolds is a fantastic Stargirl adventure, introducing many new characters and reminding readers why she’s one of DC’s best teen heroes. Johns’ passion for Stargirl shines through every page, and combined with Nauck’s beautiful artwork, makes for a truly memorable story.
7) Aquaman: Andromeda
Ram V is a truly exceptional comic book writer, and his work consistently delivers. DC has clearly recognized his talent, and everything he’s created for them – including titles like *The Many Deaths of Laila Starr*, *These Savage Shores*, and *Rare Flavours* – is fantastic. A standout example is *Aquaman: Andromeda*, illustrated by Christian Ward. The story follows a submarine crew investigating a mysterious crash, quickly drawing Aquaman and Black Manta into the mix. It’s a stunning blend of cosmic horror and beautiful, immersive artwork. Many consider it the best *Aquaman* story ever told, and it perfectly embodies the spirit of DC’s Black Label. It’s a sensational read that proves why Ram V is one of the most talented writers in the industry, both now and throughout comic book history.
6) Superman: Space Age
Mark Russell and Mike and Laura Allred have created something special with *Superman: Space Age*. This comic reimagines Superman’s origins, starting in the 1960s, and delivers a fantastic story that covers everything from the formation of the Justice League to Lex Luthor’s evil plans and a threat to the entire multiverse. It beautifully combines the classic, optimistic feel of older DC comics with a modern storytelling approach, proving just how compelling a Superman story can be. Russell clearly understands these characters, and the Allreds’ stunning, detailed artwork perfectly captures the retro aesthetic, making this comic a true visual treat. Despite a few minor flaws, it’s a remarkable achievement and a joy to read.
5) Absolute Wonder Woman
As a huge DC fan, I’ve been really impressed with their Absolute editions – they’ve definitely helped boost the publisher’s popularity. I want to highlight two of them, starting with *Absolute Wonder Woman* by Kelly Thompson and Hayden Sherman, with some fill-in work by Mattia De Iullis. This run is a fantastic take on Diana’s origin – she’s raised in Hell by Circe before coming to Earth. It’s spanned 11 issues so far, and honestly, they’re *all* essential reading. Thompson just *gets* Wonder Woman, delivering a fresh take that feels unlike anything we’ve seen in decades, while still honoring the classic runs by creators like George Perez, Phil Jimenez, Gail Simone, and Greg Rucka. And Hayden Sherman’s art? It’s gorgeous! He really nails the blend of mythology and superhero action. *Absolute Wonder Woman* is everything you could ask for in a DC comic, and it’s easily one of the best Absolute editions out there.
4) “Gotham Nocture”
Ram V took over *Detective Comics* in 2022 and, alongside writers Si Spurrier and Dan Watters, created what many consider the best Batman story ever told. “Gotham Nocturne,” which ran in issues #1062-1089, is a sprawling three-part tale where Batman confronts a completely new kind of threat. The story centers on a conflict between Batman and the Orgham family, an ancient lineage deeply connected to Gotham’s history. “Gotham Nocturne” is a true Batman saga, weaving together characters from across Gotham City to explore the Batman mythos in fresh and innovative ways. While it’s a lengthy story, it’s incredibly satisfying. A large team of talented artists – including Rafael Albuquerque, Ivan Reis, and many others – contributed stunning artwork to both the main story and backup features. This Batman story is unlike anything you’ve experienced before and will captivate you right up to its excellent conclusion.
3) “Return to Kingdom Come”
As a DC fan, I’ve been consistently impressed with *Batman/Superman: World’s Finest* since it began, and I wholeheartedly recommend the whole series. But if you’re looking for the absolute standout story, you *need* to read “Return to Kingdom Come.” Writer Mark Waid brilliantly revisits the world of *Kingdom Come*, a storyline that’s been subtly hinted at throughout *World’s Finest*. Waid, alongside artist Dan Mora, delivers a truly incredible tale. It centers around the consequences of Boy Thunder’s actions – a young hero tossed into Hypertime who has a surprising connection to Superman’s past and ultimately becomes Magog. This return to *Kingdom Come* isn’t just good, it’s sensational. Waid and Mora really breathe new life into the *Kingdom Come* mythos, offering a compelling story that will stay with you long after you finish reading.
2) Absolute Martian Manhunter
Absolute Martian Manhunter is a truly exceptional superhero comic, easily one of the best available. Written by Deniz Camp and illustrated by Javier Rodriguez, it follows FBI agent John Jones, who shares a unique bond with a Green Martian. Together, they investigate a threat from a White Martian who aims to destroy humanity by exploiting their inner darkness. This comic is a masterpiece – a stunning combination of compelling storytelling and evocative art that’s packed with emotion and meaning. After 30 years of reading comics, this stands out as something truly special. The first story arc has just concluded, so don’t miss out before the next six-issue arc begins. It’s remarkably clever and could redefine how you experience comics.
1) Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons
Kelly Sue DeConnick’s *Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons*, with stunning artwork by Phil Jimenez, Gene Ha, and Nicola Scott, offers a powerful origin story for the Amazons. This three-issue series explores how the Greek goddesses sought to create a powerful female force to protect women from both gods and men. It’s a deeply feminist take on Wonder Woman’s roots, and it’s incredibly effective. DeConnick’s writing is captivating, delivering a rich and surprising story, and the art is phenomenal, utilizing the larger format to create truly impactful visuals. Though it took a year to complete, *Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons* was well worth the wait-it’s a beautiful and unforgettable work of art.
