Introducing some of the X-Men’s most formidable villains into the Marvel Cinematic Universe could seriously threaten the entire franchise. A fresh take on the X-Men is heading to the MCU, with Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier returning to helm Marvel Studios’ X-Men reboot. We’re still eager to learn which mutant superheroes will make up the initial X-Men team in the MCU, as characters like Professor X, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, and others are frequently mentioned in rumors. However, the X-Men reboot won’t *only* feature heroes.
The X-Men reboot isn’t just introducing Marvel’s most famous and powerful heroes; it’s also set to feature well-known villains. In the Marvel Comics universe, the X-Men’s enemies are incredibly strong and dangerous, and bringing them into the live-action MCU could create a major challenge for the franchise and its heroes. While some of these villains have appeared in live-action projects before, Marvel Studios has the opportunity to finally showcase their full potential.
10) Shadow King
The Shadow King is a powerful and ancient mutant in Marvel Comics, most famously portrayed as the main villain in FX’s Legion series. He first appeared in 1979’s The Uncanny X-Men #117 and plays a key role in Storm’s past; the weather-controlling Omega-level mutant met him as a child in Egypt. Initially presented as just a telepath, the Shadow King was later shown to be a far greater danger, extending his psychic influence across multiple universes and taking control of powerful psychic minds. He would be a truly frightening addition to the MCU’s multiverse.
9) The Brood
First appearing in The Uncanny X-Men #155 in 1982, the Brood are a race of alien, insect-like parasites. They evolved to eat everything they can find and reproduce quickly. These creatures are considered the universe’s first predators, existing even before Galactus, and have remained a persistent, troublesome threat for thousands of years. Because of the X-Men’s ties to the Shi’ar Empire, they’ve clashed with the Brood repeatedly. The alien race has even conducted experiments on powerful heroes like Carol Danvers.
8) Vulcan
We’ve been introduced to Scott and Alex Summers, but their younger brother, Gabriel Summers-who was taken from his mother before birth by the Shi’ar-hasn’t appeared on screen yet. He was raised and trained by Moira MacTaggert while she was on a mission to Earth, but he eventually became the villain known as Vulcan. As an Omega-level mutant, Vulcan has the power to control and absorb huge amounts of energy, even from other people and mutants with electrical or psychic abilities. This makes him a very powerful and dangerous enemy, and his introduction could create compelling drama if Cyclops makes his debut in the X-Men reboot.
7) Nimrod
Nimrod played a significant part in X-Men: The Animated Series and even appeared in X-Men ’97 as Bastion’s father, but this technologically advanced descendant of the mutant-hunting Sentinels hasn’t yet been seen in a live-action movie. With powers including shape-shifting, self-repair, high intelligence, and the ability to foresee the future, Nimrod is a very dangerous foe who would be a fantastic addition to the MCU. He originates from the Days of Future Past timeline – a bleak future where Sentinels control both mutants and humans – and introducing him in the MCU could lay the groundwork for some of Marvel’s most important X-Men stories.
6) Magneto
It’s almost certain that Marvel Studios will be reimagining Magneto for the MCU, now that he’s been portrayed by Ian McKellen and Michael Fassbender in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men films for years. Both actors gave outstanding performances as the Master of Magnetism, but many fans are hoping a Jewish actor will be cast to play the iconic character-who has shifted between being a villain, an antihero, and a villain again-in the MCU. Magneto is arguably the X-Men’s greatest enemy, and while we haven’t always seen the full extent of his abilities, his control over magnetism makes him potentially one of the most dangerous beings in the entire universe. His powers are immense and could be a real challenge for the Avengers.
5) Bolivar Trask
Although many of the X-Men’s greatest enemies are fellow mutants, some of the team’s most frightening foes are actually regular people. Bolivar Trask, for example, is the human behind the creation of the robotic Sentinels, which have pursued, controlled, and killed mutants for decades in Marvel Comics. If Trask were to create the MCU’s Sentinels, it would drastically alter the franchise, and, as shown in X-Men ’97, could endanger the entire world. Key ideas of distrust, prejudice, and fear of the unfamiliar are central to X-Men narratives, making their inclusion in the MCU crucial.
4) Onslaught
Bringing Onslaught into the MCU as a major X-Men villain will likely take some development – he’s an incredibly powerful being formed from the most dangerous parts of Professor X and Magneto’s minds – but he would be a fantastic addition. Onslaught’s power is unlike anything we’ve seen, and it required a huge battle with almost all of Marvel’s heroes to defeat him. Not even the combined forces of Franklin Richards and Nate Grey could do the job. If Onslaught appeared in the MCU, it would drastically alter the balance of power and create a huge, life-threatening problem for Professor X, Magneto, and many other characters.
3) Apocalypse
Let’s talk about a god complex. Apocalypse is a long-standing X-Men villain – an ancient mutant who amps up his power using technology from the Celestials. Oscar Isaac’s portrayal in X-Men: Apocalypse received a lot of criticism, so it would be fantastic if Marvel Studios reimagined this supervillain for the main MCU timeline. Apocalypse is incredibly powerful, arguably one of the strongest beings in the universe, and because he’s immortal, he’s a constant and recurring danger. His blood can heal other mutants, which allows him to create the Four Horsemen, and he has the potential to be a major, multi-story villain throughout the MCU.
2) Dark Phoenix
Let’s hope Marvel Studios doesn’t adapt the Dark Phoenix Saga anytime soon, since the previous attempts by Fox were both unsuccessful. However, this storyline is incredibly significant in Marvel Comics, marking a turning point for Jean Grey as she becomes the powerful and dangerous Dark Phoenix, fueled by the cosmic Phoenix Force. Throughout the Dark Phoenix Saga, the villain presents a huge threat to the entire Marvel Universe – demonstrated by her act of destroying a star and billions of lives – meaning her introduction to the MCU could potentially jeopardize the whole franchise if not handled carefully.
1) Mister Sinister
Despite years of speculation and hints for Fox’s X-Men franchise, Nathaniel Essex, also known as Mister Sinister, never appeared in a live-action film. This is surprising considering he’s one of the most well-known, enduring, and threatening enemies of mutants. Sinister began as a human geneticist who became fixated on creating a perfect race of superhumans – so he was understandably taken aback when he discovered mutants. For decades, he conducted experiments on mutants, and also on himself, improving his own body to achieve a long lifespan, telepathy, the ability to see the future, and control over his own molecules.
Being allied with Apocalypse boosts his power, and he shares a history with several X-Men, like Gambit, Cyclops, and Jean Grey. Mister Sinister would be a fantastic villain for the X-Men reboot, potentially becoming a recurring threat. His widespread control and cruel experiments make him a compelling villain, and it would be great to see him appear in the MCU. Fans have suggested actors like Jon Hamm, Tom Ellis, and Keanu Reeves to play Mister Sinister, but we’ll have to wait and see who ultimately takes on the role of this iconic supervillain in the MCU.
